<p>Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber is showing early signs of making a recovery after he was diagnosed with a virus that left half of his face paralysed, according to a surgeon who specialises in face paralysis.</p>

<p>In a video posted on Instagram, Bieber said he had contracted Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which affected nerves in his ear and face. He noted that his right eye was not blinking.</p>

<p>Charles Nduka, a consultant plastic reconstructive surgeon in Britain and the co-founder of health charity Facial Palsy UK, said about 75% of patients with the syndrome who receive early treatment, including steroids and antivirals, make a full recovery.</p>

<p>"Before the smile recovers, the first thing that will develop is there is increasingly symmetry in the face at rest. So, the base of the nose often elevates slightly, and the mouth becomes more even. On the video that was shared, I could see some signs that there is some early recovery."</p>

They each said that among other things, Hoggard slapped them, spit in their mouths and called them derogatory names and that he restricted their breathing at one point.</p>

<p>During the roughly month-long trial, Hoggard testified his memory of the encounters wasn't clear, but he said that he had consensual, passionate, sex with the complainants and that he didn't touch the teen sexually until after she turned 16. I knew when she turned 16, Hoggard testified, adding he made sure to be responsible and not break the law.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His best-known work remains the pacifist hymn "Quand les hommes vivront d'amour" ("When Men Live by Love"), which was written partly in reaction to the Algerian war that France was waging at the time, and which has been covered by a variety of Canadian and French singers including Celine Dion and Eddie Constantine.</p>

<p>"All my condolences to the family and loved ones of the great Quebecer Raymond Levesque, author of one of the most beautiful songs of all time," Quebec Prime Minister Francois Legault said on Twitter.</p>

<p>Levesque had been committed to the idea of independence for Quebec and refused the Governor General's Award when it was offered to him in 2005 because it represented the British monarchy in Canada.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After going deaf in the mid-1980s, he devoted himself to writing, particularly poetry and theater. He was hospitalized in Montreal after contracting Covid-19 and died Monday, according to his family, quoted by the media.&nbsp;</p>
