Battling an inconsistent form, double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Tuesday slipped five places to world number 17 in the latest BWF world rankings.

Ever since returning from a five-month long injury layoff, Sindhu has struggled to string together a series of wins in a week, resulting in a title-less streak this season.

A former world number 2 Sindhu, who had suffered a stress fracture on her ankle during her title-winning run at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, currently has 49,480 points from 14 tournaments.

This is her lowest ranking in over a decade. The last time she was ranked 17th was in January, 2013. She has been inside the top 10 since 2016, having reached a career-best world number 2 in April, 2016.

Sindhu will hope she finds her footing quickly in the Olympic qualification period which ends in April next year, especially after getting the services of Indonesian coach Muhammad Hafiz Hashim, a former All England champion.

The 2019 World Champion, Sindhu had reached the final of the Madrid Spain Masters, her best finish this season. She registered a semifinal finish at Malaysia Masters and Canada Open but made a quarterfinal exit in the next event at the US Open. She is now in Korea for a super 500 tournament.

HS Prannoy also slipped a place to world number 10, while Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth were static at 12th and 20th spots respectively.

Saina Nehwal slumped five places to world number 36.

Men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty remain India's best-placed shuttlers at world number 3.

Among others, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also lost a spot to be at the 19th position in women's doubles, while there was no Indian in the top 25 in mixed doubles.

On Monday (July 11), Lakshya Sen&nbsp;emerged on top of Li Shi Feng in straight games to win the Canada Open 2023, a BWF Super 500 tournament. It was a thrilling contest where the young Indian shuttler relied on his incredible speed and power to come on top of the reigning All England champion Feng 21-18 22-20 to clinch the title. Following this win, Lakshya has climbed up the ladder to take the 12th spot in the latest BWF Rankings.

Lakshya had dropped out of the top ten and later from the top 20 as well following his early exits from the&nbsp;Malaysia Open and India Open respectively, early this year. However, his position improved after a semi-final exit at the Thailand Open -- taking him back in the top 20 -- before a title win in the Canada Open saw him near the top ten. 
 
After his memorable win over Feng, the 21-year-old called it 'one of the greatest comebacks' in his career. It is to be noted that he saved as many as four game points in the second game to grab a championship point.&nbsp;

After the match, Lakshya told PTI, "Coming into the Olympic qualification year, it was tough as things didn't go my way. So, this will be one of the good tournaments for me and playing the finals like that is for me one of the greatest comebacks." The Canada Open is the Indian star's maiden title after winning his first-ever gold medal during last year's Commonwealth Games in August. In addition, Lakshya is only the second singles player from the country to win a title this year after compatriot HS Prannoy's sensational triumph at the Malaysia Masters in May.

Lakshya entered the Canda Open final on the back of a straight-game win over Japanese player Kenta Nishimoto. With wins over Nishimoto and reigning All England champion Feng, the youngster will be in good stead going into the US Open Super 300 badminton tournament, which kicked off on Tuesday (July 11). Needless to say, Lakshya will be desperate to retain the momentum going forward and break into the top ten sooner than later.

India's star badminton player PV Sindhu has brought many laurels to the country. From winning two Olympic medals to topping the rankings, Sindhu has added lots of feathers to her cap. But the past few years have not been special for India's star badminton star. The Two-time Olympic medalist has consistently failed to win big tournaments and this has impacted her ranking as well. The latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings were released recently and Sindhu has suffered a major setback in her career ranking. Sindhu has slipped three places to be at the 15th position in the rankings.

PV Sindhu, who dropped out of the top 10 in April this year, has 51,070 points from 13 tournaments. She will next participate in the Canadian Open Super 500 tournament this week.
