Kanpur-based Defence Materials and Store Research and Development (DMSRDE) developed the lightest bulletproof jacket for protection against 7.62 x 54 R API (Level 6 of BIS 17051) ammunition.&nbsp;

The defence ministry said that this bulletproof jacket was successfully tested at Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh. The jacket is reportedly based on a new design approach.&nbsp;

<h2>What all can this bulletproof jacket withstand?</h2>

The front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) of this jacket can withstand multiple hits or up to six shots of 7.62 x 54 R API (Sniper rounds) in both ICW (In-conjuction with) as well as the standalone design.&nbsp;

"The areal density of ICW hard armour panel (HAP) and standalone HAP is less than 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 respectively," the statement added.

It is made of monolithic ceramic plate and polymer backing which enhances the wearability and comfort during an operation.&nbsp;

Earlier, it was reported that the Indian Air Force helicopter crew deployed in counter-terrorist environments and internal security duties will get new bulletproof jackets that are lighter and more comfortable to wear while flying than the existing variants.

The Indian Air Force's requirement is for a jacket whose weight does not exceed 4 kg during flying and 8 kg during combat survival and offers Level 3+ ballistic protection.

Level 3+ category offers protection against different types of bullets fired from 7.62 mm rifles, including AK-47, at ranges as close as 25 meters.

Each member deployed in such operations would reportedly be authorised a bulletproof jacket.

Made in India: DRDO develops lightest bulletproof jacket against highest threat level

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said that the priority of the country's leadership should be to ensure that bulletproof jackets are provided to its soldiers, rather than focussing on bullet trains.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, Mr Yadav took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government's ambitious bullet train project and said, "Today, the country does not require a bullet train, it is more important that our soldiers get bulletproof jackets."

Akhilesh Yadav's comment comes in the wake of the terror on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama last week, in which over 40 soldiers were killed.

The Samajwadi Party leader also raised questions over intelligence agencies and called on the centre to formulate a long-term strategy for securing the country's borders.

"Why is our Intelligence failing? You can't compensate for the loss of lives. The nation stands by its security forces and jawans. If all political parties have put their political events on hold, the ruling party should do the same and form a long-term strategy to secure our borders," Mr Yadav said.

Earlier on Monday, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking direction from the central government to constitute a commission headed by a retired Supreme Court judge along with Army, intelligence and local administration to conduct an investigation into the Uri attack in 2016 and the Pulwama terror attack.

Don't need bullet train, soldiers should get bulletproof jackets: Akhilesh Yadav

The Indian government finally signed a&nbsp;major contract to make bullet-proof jackets for Indian soldiers who were in desperate need of the life-saving kit from a long time.

The signed contract under 'Make In India' was won by small Delhi based company, SMPP Pvt Ltd. The company has a Research and Development Centre in Okhla, Delhi.

“The new jackets meet the most advanced GSQRs 1438 (technical parameters) standards of the Indian Army. These bullet-proof jackets have 'Boron Carbide Ceramic', which is the lightest material for ballistic protection,” said SMPP chairman S C Kansal in a statement.

1.86 lakh bullet-proof jackets will be procured for 639 crore rupees for the army and are expected to be delivered within three years.

These jackets were finalised after a series of 'stringent field evaluation trials', said Nirmala Sitharaman-led Defence Ministry.

Indian&nbsp;army has been struggling to get the life-saving kit from a very long time. In 2009 the army first made a request for more than 1.86 lakh bullet-proof jackets but the order got delayed due to no vendor cleared the trials conducted by the army.

These ergonomically designed Bullet-proof Jackets&nbsp;have modular parts&nbsp;providing immense protection and flexibility to soldiers operating in different operational situations ranging from long-distance patrolling to high-risk room intervention scenarios,” said an officer.

These jackets can sustain the impact of hard steel core bullets during the combat and will provide 360-degree protection to soldiers.

In 2016 army made an emergency purchase of 50,000 bullet-proof jackets but as the jackets did not meet the standards that were required as it was designed on older specifications.

The Maharashtra Police have returned 1,430 of the 4,600 bulletproof jackets they received following the 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai, as they failed the AK-47 bullet test during trials.&nbsp;

&ldquo;We have sent back more than 1,400 bulletproof jackets to the manufacturer as they did not pass our test with AK-47 bullets,&rdquo; Additional DGP (Procurement and Coordination) V V Laxminarayana said.

The Jackets returned to a Kanpur-based manufacturing firm were from three different batches.&nbsp;

The police department had ordered 5,000 bulletproof vests. During the trials conducted at the Chandigarh-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory, only around 3,000 jackets passed the test, an officer said.

The state police started receiving the consignment of jackets in the last quarter of 2017 &mdash; the ninth anniversary year of the attacks.
