In Beijing, French President Emmanuel Macron found what he might be missing in Paris these days: Pomp and pageantry.&nbsp;

Macron was welcomed by Chinese leader Xi Jinping's charm offensive. The French leader called on Beijing to help make "lasting peace" in Ukraine. But it remains unclear how China's "no-limits" friendship with Russia would stand the test of bringing peace in Ukraine amid ongoing Russian offensive.&nbsp;

After being back in Paris, Macron <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/macron-warns-eu-must-not-take-us-china-side-on-taiwan-issue-after-beijing-visit-580767">warned</a> European Union must resist pressure to become "America's followers". Beijing effect on Paris? One wonders.&nbsp;

Finland's flag was raised at NATO headquarters in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/finland-now-under-the-nato-cover-will-sweden-join-soon-579281">Brussels this week</a>. The Scandinavian nation became the 31st member of the US-led military alliance. Russia has called it an assault on its security, and has warned Finland of "countermeasures".&nbsp;Blocking the expansion of NATO&nbsp; has long remained a goal of Russian President Vladimir Putin's leadership. It remains to be seen how Finland getting into NATO will pan out for war in Ukraine.

This week, Israel's self-proclaimed contested capital yet again saw an escalation of country's existential conflict with Palestine.&nbsp;

It began when Israeli police clashed with Muslim worshipers in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/clashes-erupt-again-at-jerusalems-al-aqsa-mosque-six-injured-579598">compound of holy Al-Aqsa mosque</a>, defying long-standing compromise on compound's management. Hours after Israeli police pushed back worshipers at the mosque, a barrage of rockets from Gaza strip set off air sirens in southern Israel. The cross-border exchange of fire in Gaza has stoked fears of further violence in the volatile West Asian region.

In Uganda's capital Kampala, President Yoweri Museveni called on African leaders to "reject the promotion of homosexuality". The Ugandan president is set to sign a bill that will impose death penalty against same-sex activities.

But Kampala's anti-LGBTQ move has not gone unchallenged.

Protests broke out this week in South Africa's administrative capital Pretoria against Ugandan president Museveni, as activists marched to Ugandan High Commission and called on South African government to speak out against the proposed law. Meanwhile, the UN high commissioner for human rights has urged President Museveni to not sign the regressive bill. A request Museveni does not appear very keen to follow up.&nbsp;

This week, the eastern European country had its fifth election in last two years. But like the results of previous four, the latest election is also expected to fade into a political deadlock. The leaders of two parties with most votes have ruled out a coalition. Following this, another temporary cabinet or election is likely to be Bulgaria's next moment of political reckoning.&nbsp;

This week, Paul Rusesabagina, Rwanda's most famous political prisoner, and hero of the film 'Hotel Rwanda', was freed from a prison in Kigale. Paul was depicted in the 2004 film about genocide in his country in which hundreds of thousands were killed. The film showed him as savior of more than 1,200 people at the luxury hotel he managed during the genocide. Paul was arrested in Kigale and subsequently charged with terrorism in 2020 after a trial.&nbsp;

Paul reunited with his tearful family at a U.S. Army base in Texas this week.

His freedom marks an end to months of campaign for his release from the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Don Cheadle, the actor who portrayed Paul's role in Hotel Rwanda.&nbsp;

Ministers of the European Union nations are meeting in Brussels to discuss the latest round of sanctions against Moscow and support for Ukraine. Top diplomats have warned that the European Union must find ways to quickly provide thousands of artillery shells to Ukraine.

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the European Parliament, thanking the bloc's representatives for their support. "We are fighting ourselves against the biggest anti-European force in contemporary history," he said. "On the battlefield, we Ukrainians are defending you."

Lawmakers in the European Union (EU) will on Wednesday (January 18) vote on a candidate to replace former Parliament vice president Eva Kaili, after a key suspect in the European Parliament corruption scandal cut a deal with Belgian prosecutors to reveal information about the countries involved and the bribes payment, a report by news agency Associated Press said.

Lawmakers in the European Union (EU) will on Wednesday (January 18) vote on a candidate to replace former Parliament vice president Eva Kaili, after a key suspect in the European Parliament corruption scandal cut a deal with Belgian prosecutors to reveal information about the countries involved and the bribes payment, a report by news agency Associated Press said. Kaili was removed from the top post after she was taken into custody in December last year facing charges of corruption, money laundering and membership in a criminal organisation. Apart from Kaili, Belgian prosecutors suspect that three other lawmakers — former Italian Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Pier Antonio Panzeri, Kaili’s partner and Panzeri’s friend Francesco Giorgi; and Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, head of the charity group No Peace Without Justice, were paid by Qatar and Morocco to influence decision-making at the assembly, the report said. However, both countries have denied the allegation. On Tuesday, Belgian prosecutors said that key suspect Pier Antonio Panzeri cut a deal to reveal more information about the scandal in exchange for a lighter sentence. Here is what you need to know about the corruption scandal which has rocked the European Parliament (one of the legislative bodies of the EU): What is the scandal about? Back in 2021, the Belgian Police started to probe possible interference by a foreign government in the European Union's decision-making, acting on the information provided by Belgium's intelligence service, a report by news agency Bloomberg said citing the Le Soir newspaper. Over 20 searches were carried out at the residences and offices of European lawmakers in Belgium's capital Brussels and Italy, and led to the seizure of 1.5 million euros. ALSO READ | Morocco ‘tried to bribe’ members of European Parliament for Pegasus probe details December 2022: Four arrests made In December last year, four suspects were arrested — Eva Kaili, Pier Antonio Panzeri, Francesco Giorgi and Niccolo Figa-Talamanca. They were held on charges of "criminal organisation, corruption and money laundering". Citing Le Soir, the Bloomberg report said that according to Belgian prosecutors, the scandal focused on a Gulf country that was suspected of having sought to influence the political and economic decisions of the European Parliament. The prosecutors believed cash and other gifts were used to secure favours from people of influence in the legislature. In a statement to prosecutors by Francesco Giorgi and a former assistant of ex-Italian MEP Pierre Antonio Panzeri, investigators were focusing on Panzeri’s time as chair of a parliamentary human rights committee, when he worked with the Qatar government. In documents related to the case, Qatar and Morocco were mentioned, and Francesco Giorgi admitted that he was involved in activities led by Panzeri aimed at favouring the interests of these two countries, Le Soir said. News also came out that former EU commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos accepted 60,000 euros for carrying out work for an NGO headed by Panzeri which was linked to the corruption allegations. Panzeri cuts deal for a lighter sentence Pier Antonio Panzeri, who is currently under arrest, will reveal information about the corruption scandal. Issuing a statement, the Belgian prosecutors said in return, Panzeri would get a limited sentence including imprisonment, a fine and confiscation of one million euros in assets. According to Belgian media, the former Italian MEP was under surveillance by Belgian intelligence services for at least a month before he was arrested. ALSO READ | European parliament plans to ban Qatari officials from premises The Italian government, meanwhile, arrested Panzeri's wife and daughter under a warrant issued by Belgium and authorised their extradition. Citing local media, the news agency AFP reported his wife is challenging the court order and their daughter is expected to follow suit. What is the European Parliament doing about the scandal? Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, said that no stone will ne left unturned in fighting attempts to exert undue influence on lawmakers. On Monday (January 16), Metsola vowed to impose new rules to tackle foreign corruption, and also pledged to ensure "more transparency" and "accountability" - with a "first-step approach" that would include greater scrutiny of "those representing third countries and their interests". On Sunday, Morocco pulled off an unlikely heist by beating&nbsp;Belgium in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. However, what should have been a moment of celebration for Moroccan fans quickly turned chaotic in Belgium and Netherlands as riots broke out in several cities.&nbsp;

In the capital city of Brussels, the police were forced to detain over a dozen people while eight were arrested in the Northern city of Antwerp.

The arrests took place after the police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the unruly mob of supporters that had gathered to celebrate Morocco's victory.&nbsp;

“Those are not fans, they are rioters. Moroccan fans are there to celebrate. There were also disturbances in the city of Antwerp and Liege," said&nbsp;Brussels mayor Philippe Close while urging people top stay away from the city centre.&nbsp;

While condemning the EU’s military support to Ukraine, Orban added, “Now we are supplying destructive weapons, we are training Ukrainian soldiers on our own territory, we are imposing sanctions on energy... We are becoming an integral part [of the conflict]. We are not being shot at yet, but we are about to become belligerent. Europe is playing a very dangerous game."

Orban has also opposed the EU’s proposal to provide $18 billion in aid to Ukraine in form of loans. "Hungary is not going to accept that EU members take out loans together to help Ukraine," he declared.

For the past five months, one of the city’s largest hospitals has been offering “museum prescriptions” as a method to cure depression.&nbsp;

This cure entails a free visit with a few friends or family to discover one or more of Brussels’ cultural institutions, reports the Guardian.

Brussels deputy mayor in charge of culture, Delphine Houba, claims that the project is the first of its kind in Europe.&nbsp;

Speaking to the Observer, she said that the first aim of this pilot project is to reinforce access to culture after the pressured days of lockdown.&nbsp;

“I want everybody back in our cultural institutions… but we know that, even before Covid, for some people it [was] not easy to open the door of a museum, they don’t feel at ease, they don’t think that it’s for them. And I really want to show that cultural venues are for everybody.”

While the second objective is to provide doctors “a new tool in the healing process”, she said.

When asked how she first got the idea of such a unique approach to tackle depression, the young socialist politician cited a similar project in Canada, where doctors have been issuing prescriptions to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts since 2018.

This pilot project involves touring five museums that are directly under the control of city authorities. These include the city’s history museum, a centre for contemporary art, and the fashion and lace museum.

“Anything could have therapeutic value if it helps people get a good feeling and get in touch with themselves,” said Dr Johan Newell, a psychiatrist at Brugmann University Hospital, which is taking part in the pilot scheme.

He believes that the concept of museum prescriptions would find takers from people suffering undergoing depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, psychosis and bipolar disorder.&nbsp;

“I think almost anyone could benefit from it. It would probably be more adapted for people who are already a little bit further on in the recovery process”, he said.

Until the end of the year, the government had extended sales tax breaks on gas, electricity and fuel, De Croo told public broadcaster RTBF.

With pilots and cabin crew of Brussels Airlines planning a June 23-25 strike over working conditions, further travel disruption is expected later this week.
