Atmanirbhar Bharat under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to obliterate the legal remnants of the British colonial rule and has instructed all departments to identify and replace all pre-Independence acts with new&nbsp;laws.

“The Government desires that the entire legal code of India should remain purely Indian and there is a need to remove traces of or references to British ties and subject matter of British Statutes, etc. Thus, existing laws made by legislature of pre-Constitution era should be replaced with laws made by the legislature which is in place post-independence,” the Legislative Department told all government departments on March 23.

The first significant step in throwing off the British yoke was the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill which has become an act after the Rajya Sabha passed it on August 2. Under the Act, 42 laws would be changed and 183 provisions revised to minimise the number of cases in the courts, make doing business easier, and keep people out of jail for small offences.

Besides decriminalisation of minor offences -- that is abolishing the use of incarceration as a punishment for minor offences -- the Jan Vishwas Act envisages rationalisation of monetary penalties, depending on the gravity of the offence, bolstering trust-based governance. 
 
Among the British era acts that are being amended under it are the Indian Post Office Act of 1898, Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act of 1937, Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 and Public Debt Act of 1944.

The second set of laws to replace the colonial acts was introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah on August 11 to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1898, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872. The three bills, simplified and updated, are named Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill; and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, respectively.

While the move is hailed as a historical push to remove the British hangover, its timing and intent has raised a controversy whether axing these British-era laws were a step towards justice or a political manoeuvre.

An official said there were 45 such pre-Constitution central acts in the Central List, 21 in the State List and 58 in the Concurrent List that required re-enactment or repeal under the new guidelines. Among the Central List are the Petroleum Act and the Reserve Bank of India Act, both of 1934, he said.

Government replacing all colonial acts to remove British Raj traces

It was the year 1960. India had&nbsp;been free of British Raj for 13 years now.&nbsp;Transistor radios had made their way into society and were now accompanying every passing bicycle. Ameen Sayani, the star voice of All India Radio, could be heard in every house, corner shop and street. Radio was not just immensely popular but had become a quintessential way of life for Indians. 
 
A few years back, the citizens of the country&nbsp;gathered&nbsp;at&nbsp;every nook&nbsp;and cranny&nbsp;to listen to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru as he delivered&nbsp;his historic Tryst With Destiny speech, only to concur with him 'At the stroke of the midnight hour when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.' 
 
Although it was the dawn of an independent India, radio was in its golden era – brimming with shows, plays and music – after playing a significant role in relaying the news and important messages at a time when the world was at war with itself and India burned under the British dominance.

<h2>Radio in war times</h2>

In its initial years, radio emerged as an important tool to communicate the developments of the battlefield amid waging wars. It found its commercial base just after World War I and the first radio stations in the world were set up in the 1940s. 
 
In India, the first commercial transmission of radio was sent out by the Radio Club of Bombay in 1923. The Calcutta Radio Club started the same year and a year after Madras got its radio broadcasts with the Madras Presidency Radio Club.

The radio saw fascination and excitement reach its peak around the new technology.&nbsp;However, radio programming gained stability after the government stepped into the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS) in 1930 and started its operations on an experimental basis. On June 8, 1936, ISBS finally became what is known today as All India Radio (AIR).

<h2>Radio as a tool for war and propaganda</h2>

In 1936, the first daily news bulletin was introduced. But the need of expanding it to a national network and external service grew during World War II. Radio was being used for Nazi propaganda and there was a sudden need to counter it. Hence, the practice of broadcasting all news bulletins from one central newsroom started. Around 27 bulletins were being broadcasted every day during the war years. 
 
In this chaotic environment and with All India Radio emerging as a propaganda machine for British imperialism, Congress freedom fighters were left with no choice but to start their short-lived underground 'Congress Radio' which was broadcasted from an unknown location in Bombay at a depth of 41.78 metres. 
 
On the other hand, Subhas&nbsp;Chandra Bose spearheaded his own radio service “Azad Hind Radio” as part of Germany’s radio service. This German-funded radio first aired on 7 January 1942 and was aimed at showing solidarity with Indians living abroad. Radio, thus, became a tool for warring nations, rebellious leaders and propagandists.

<h2>Age of Akashvani</h2>

AIR adopted the name Akashvani in 1956. The name, which was derived from the title of Rabindranath Tagore's composition, was used interchangeably with All India Radio, only to become an exclusive name on 3 May 2023. The Akashvani jingle evokes a lot of memories for many Indians whose childhood and youth were filled with these tunes. 
 
Czech Republic's Walter Kaufmann, who had come to India after fleeing Nazi persecution, had composed the jingle. Today, AIR has a network of more than 262 radio stations and is available in 92 per cent of the country, reaching almost all its population. It has been broadcast in 23 languages and 146 dialects to cater to the diverse demographics of India. 
 
Explaining its vast outreach while speaking to WION, AIR Additional Director General Dr Atul Kumar Tiwary said, “AIR continues to maintain its hold among its traditional base of citizens who have grown up listening to the news and programs in a simple, listener-friendly format. Its USP is ABC of the basics of broadcast - Authenticity, Brevity and Clarity. AIR has coverage of 92 per cent of the area and 95 per cent of the population across the country. It is broadcast in 23 Indian languages which are in the eighth schedule of the constitution, 179 dialects and 11 foreign languages.”

Explained: Tracing the journey of radio from colonial British Raj to independent and multi-lingual India

Every year on January 30, India observes ‘Shaheed Diwas’ or ‘Martyr’s Day’. The day marks the death anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or Mahatma Gandhi.

On this day, India pays homage to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to secure freedom for India from the oppressive British regime.

On January 30, 1948, just five months after India gained independence, Gandhi was shot three times at point-blank range during a prayer meeting at Birla House compound in New Delhi. He was 78.

He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. Gandhi died at the spot.

Since then, India observes that day as ‘Martyr’s Day’ to mourn the loss of its greatest freedom fighter.

How is ‘Martyr’s Day’ celebrated?

Every year on this day, the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and the three Service Chiefs —Army, Air Force, and Navy—pay tribute at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial at Raj Ghat in Delhi.

As per the government’s directions, two minutes of silence is observed in states and UTs on January 30 in the memory of martyred freedom fighters.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested for threatening to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II in revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

The accused, identified as Jaswant Singh Chail, was detained on December 25 on the premises of the royal’s Berkshire residence, days after a video went viral on Snapchat showing a man armed with a crossbow and wearing a mask and a black hoodie.

In the video, Chail detailed plans to kill the Queen to avenge the victims of the Amritsar massacre, according to the Sun newspaper.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I've done and what I will do. I will attempt to assassinate Elizabeth, Queen of the Royal Family," the masked man is seen saying in the video.

"This is revenge for those who have died in the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. It is also revenge for those who have been killed, humiliated and discriminated on because of their race. I'm an Indian Sikh, a Sikh. My name was Jaswant Singh Chail, my name is Darth Jones," he says.

The Metropolitan Police said the arrested has been detained under the UK’s Mental Health Act after a mental health assessment and remains “in the care of medical professionals”.

Meanwhile, his father Jasbir Singh Chail said his son was of unsound mind.

"Something’s gone horribly wrong with our son, and we are trying to figure out what. We’ve not had a chance to speak to him but are trying to get him the help he needs,” the 57-year-old told MailOnline.&nbsp;

“From our perspective, we are going through a difficult time. We are trying to resolve this issue and it’s not easy,” he added.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place in Amritsar in 1919 where hundreds of unarmed Indians were killed in an indiscriminate firing by the British colonial troops under the orders of General Reginald Dyer.
