A 35-year-old man from the Sribhumi district of Assam, who has been missing since Thursday (August 27), has been found in Bangladesh by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The person has been identified as Balai Namasudra, a resident of Gobindapur village in Sribhumi district. After the discovery, BGB claimed that Namasudra was smuggling drugs and arms into Bangladesh. Balai's wife, Mamata Namasudra, stated that he would regularly go fishing near the border pillar every day, and on Thursday morning, at around 5:30 am, he had gone to collect the fish in the net he had set up the previous evening. She further stated that later that day, an individual from Bangladesh called her on WhatsApp and requested photocopies of Balai's voter ID, Aadhaar card and passport, if possible. An Indian paramilitary guard was killed and another critically wounded after they were fired upon by Bangladeshi troops at a border river on Thursday, Indian security forces said, the first deadly frontier clash between the nations in years.

The incident in&nbsp;West Bengal took place after Bangladesh detained three Indian fishermen for allegedly sailing into their waters searching for Hilsa, a popular fish in regional cuisine.

Two of the fishermen were released or escaped and informed&nbsp;border guards of their detention.

Six Indian guards then took a boat to an island on the Padma River to secure the release of the third fisherman from their Bangladeshi counterparts,&nbsp;Border Security Force (BSF) said.

The BSF said a "border guard was killed and another critically injured in firing by Bangladeshi border troops along the riverine border".

But in a statement late Thursday, Bangladesh said Indian troops fired first after they "forcibly tried to take the detained fisherman" and their border personnel resisted them.

The Indian soldiers "got angry and opened fire and they drove their speedboat back to India by firing all the way. Then the (Border Guard Bangladesh) patrol team fired back in self-defence," the BGB said.

The Indian border force named the slain maritime officer as Head Constable Vijay Bhan Singh. The second guard was taken to hospital, where he was fighting for his life.

Bangladesh said officials from both sides met after the incident and agreed to investigate the encounter and hold future talks.

Illegal fishing is not uncommon in the Sunderbans, a UNESCO world heritage site which straddles the border of India and Bangladesh and is famous for its mangrove forest.

Thousands of people fish in the area around the year. Fishermen detained on both sides are usually released after talks between border officials.

Border relations between India and Bangladesh have been good, and this is the first fatal incident in recent times.

Earlier, in August 2005, guards on both sides exchanged fire over repairs on the Mahananda river, in West Bengal, with no casualties.

Bangladesh and India in the past couple of years have settled adverse possession of lands where nearly 37,000 people have been residing in 111 Indian enclaves inside Bangladesh and another 14,000 people have been living in 51 Bangladeshi enclaves inside India.

In August last year, the two countries agreed to resolve the adverse possessions by swapping the enclaves. In a development, the Bangladeshi authorities last month enlisted 10,500 members of the enclaves into its voting database and said smart ID cards will be issued to them soon, local news agency bdnews24.com reports.

Despite the resolutions related to the border issues being carried out, recurrent killing of unarmed Bangladeshi civilians hinder the bilateral relation between the countries. The two countries share a bilateral trade of US $6 billion, more than 90 per cent of which is Indian exports to Bangladesh.

Ninety-five per cent of the killings are related to cattle smuggling, said Major General Aziz Ahmed, director general of Border Guard Bangladesh at a press briefing on Friday.

The killing of 15-year-old Felani Khatun in 2015 in BSF firing stirred protests across Bangladesh and prompted the trial of a BSF trooper in Indian court. Felani was returning to her home in Bangladesh with her father from India. BSF trooper Amiya Ghosh, who was charged with her killing in 2011, was acquitted last year after facing trial in two phases for inconclusive and insufficient evidence against him.&nbsp;

&quot;Bangladesh government and BGB have confirmed us to cover all international boundaries through single row fencing,&quot; KK Sharma, director general of Border Security Force told reporters after the conclusion of directors general-level meeting on October 4.

&ldquo;We should have joint efforts to curb issues like trans-border crimes, cattle smuggling, arms smuggling [and] human trafficking and also drugs that goes into Bangladesh,&rdquo; said Major General Aziz Ahmed, director general of Border Guard Bangladesh.

&ldquo;Now that border demarcation has taken place, there is a desire to avoid any further border killings,&rdquo; Farooq Sobhan, former Bangladesh high commissioner to India told WION.

In 2010, the BSF and BGB signed agreements to introduce non-lethal weapons like pump action guns and rubber bullets to contain border intrusion. At a press briefing on Friday, General Ahmed told reporters that most of the civilians who are killed at the borders are targetted at eyes, head and chest leading up to their deaths.

Top officials of border forces of India and Bangladesh met on Tuesday to discuss security-related issues, including cross-border infiltration and smuggling.
