Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with BJP lawmakers will be observing a day-long fast on Thursday in Delhi against the recent Parliment washout by the opposition parties.

The decision was announced by the BJP on the last day of the Budget session last week after accusing the opposition, mainly Congress, of practicing divisive politics.

While Modi will go about his day and fast from his residence in Lok Kalyan Marg, BJP president Amit Shah, on the other hand, will be sitting on a dharna (silent protest) in Hubli-Dharwad against the Siddaramaiah government in poll-bound Karnataka.

BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said that the idea of the fast was mooted by Modi to communicate to the nation that BJP is aware of the suffering imposed on them by the logjam in Parliament. "This is why all NDA MPs decided to forego their salaries for 23 days of the Budget session," Rao added.

This year’s Budget session has been the most unproductive in the last eight years and the BJP has tried to put the blame on Congress for stopping deliberation in both Houses.

The Congress had stopped important bills from being passed, which led to a "criminal wastage" of the taxpayer's money, parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar had told reporters.

The BJP's announcement of a fast comes just a day after Congress chief Rahul Gandhi led his party on a nationwide fast targeting the Modi government over the washout of the Parliament session and a host of other issues, including the alleged caste and communal violence.

Modi will address all BJP MLAs (nearly 1,600) through video conferencing on Wednesday and interact with some of them when the MPs will be holding "Samata Diwas" in their respective constituencies on the occasion of Jyotiba Phule birth anniversary. All BJP MPs will go on a fast in their respective constituencies.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the "farce of a fast by the Modi government and BJP" on the April 12 should really be a fast to seek an apology over a range of issues including the banking frauds, leak of CBSE paper and dilution of SC/ST Act.

Unnao gangrape: Accused MLA's brother arrested, SIT formed

2019 Lok Sabha elections is less likely to be fought on economic promise or earned laurels but on the issue of social justice on caste lines. This pattern was broken during 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The prominent theme was Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas (collective efforts, inclusive growth) and PM Modi's viral slogan Na Khaunga Na Khane Dunga (will not engage in corruption myself, nor allow others). It also witnessed split in Dalit vote in North India leading to BJP sweeping all the reserved seats in Uttar Pradesh.

This trend continued well into the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections leading to a tsunami in BJP's favour. Despite such good showing, the backward caste realignment has found a firm footing in the opposition's politics. There is one main factor for its re-emergence.
&nbsp
First and foremost reason is the internal contradiction within Hinduism. At the level of practice, the limit of tolerance fails both socially and culturally at the door of a Dalit family. This contradiction was surmounted only because of Narendra Modi's massive appeal in 2014 but subsequent cultural positions of upper caste and sanskritised OBC reopened the schism.
&nbsp
Upper caste and OBC led political Hindutva met its match with backward caste mobilisation in Bihar. Though the point in case is that in absence of gathbandhan (tie-up) between OBC and backward castes, BJP swept UP and did exceptionally well in reserved constituencies as well.
&nbsp
It is this realisation that Congress in past two years has altered it politics from Congress Ka Haath Aam Aadmi Ki Saath (Congress' hand is with the common man) to strong backward caste, Dalit oriented politics. It peppers its Dalit campaign with strong Hindu symbols to counter the 'foreign' character of Rahul Gandhi's leadership. The regional parties too have come together out of an existential crisis.
&nbsp
Apart from minorities, Dalits too were at the receiving end of the cow protection campaign. It created schism within the concept of the larger Hindu family. Multiple cases across North India were reported where Dalits became target of the lynch mobs because there work involved cattle skinning and trading which stood opposed to the upper caste and OBC led moral eco-system of the new Hindutva brigade.
&nbsp
Lastly, it is the only issue the BJP government has been politically defensive about. Whether it was Rohit Vemula controversy, or violence against Dalit community in Gujarat or anti-reservation agitation - it reinforces old identity politics which BJP has been trying to subsume under the rubric of cultural nationalism. The attempt of BJP has been to consume caste identities under one monolithic identity of a Hindu but inadvertently, old identities persist as caste remains integral to practiced Hinduism which manifests itself in forms of marriage, death, rituals and feasting. It for this reason that BJP has paid special focus on contribution of BR Ambedkar and common dining with Dalit communities. But original ideology has its limitation. It is for this reason that post-Tripura victory saw desecration of statues of Ambedkar.
&nbsp
The same consolidation seem to be working in Karnataka which has not allowed BJP campaign to take off.
&nbsp
Uttar Pradesh was an example in case where undivided Hindu vote created a BJP tsunami. Phoolpur and Gorakhpur results on the other hand show that backward caste alignment amongst OBCs and Dalits have the potential to create a counter narrative. What is debatable is as to which identity politics is better - India divided on backward-forward politics, or between one majority and various minorities? The whole idea is debatable but what it does is that it takes Indian politics back to Mandal vs Kamandal polarisation.
&nbsp
The only difference is that it took couple of years for BSP and SP to sink differences to defeat BJP. The political compulsion and strength of BJP was the reason behind it. The result is there for everyone to see. Only thing is whether history will repeat itself. Such political configuration have defeated Congress and BJP in past but none could complete a term which includes alliance between then Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati. So, whoever wins Lok Sabha elections on 2019, old identity politics is back in the game.

Opinion: Mandal vs Kamandal version 2.0 likely in 2019 polls

I wonder that how human psyche and desires across different time zones resonant with each other. These days, whenever I look at the political slugfest in India, an anecdote from Mahabharata looms in my mind. Before the famous war at Kurukshetra, Vidur told Dhritarashtra, "Lord, your desperate attempt to put your son at throne will not only eradicate you and family but the worst thing is that nation and people are paying and will pay a hefty price for unjustified and directionless ambition of yours."

This so very well outlines the current days Congress party/Gandhi scion in particular, and also the other opposition parties as well.

Two pieces of news over the past week defines the very mood of politics in the nation and demonstrate the issue mentioned above. First, budget session of Parliament was washed out because of the sheer skirmish between ruling party and opposition parties. Second, when so-called Dalit activists hit the road after a Supreme Court verdict on SC/ST Act, every political party came to fore and tried to extract some political gain.

Rahul Gandhi in the process hit an unprecedented low. He, in a tweet eventually ended up applauding crowd involved in acts of vandalism on the streets and encouraging them. He lied through his teeth as he linked the whole issue with Modi government whereas it was a verdict passed by the apex court. Reinforcing such divides in the society for political mileage would be no less than ominous for the country.

In Congress, the desperation for coming back to power and to establish Rahul politically is so strong that righteousness and virtuousness have no space now. No matter how sinister the narrative is if it gives some political gain it is on. The nation would pay the price.

This is the nadir of parliamentary democracy these days. In a democracy, opposition parties play a big role in this system as they play (supposedly) part of a conscience-keeper and keep the government in check. But this rule has completely vanished over the past few years. Bid to scuttle whatever government does is the current era's conscience-keeping.

It is sad, extremely sad for one of the largest democracies in the world. Our politician of this generation needs to look back and learn some lesson from our own past, from our earlier parliamentarian.

During the time of Nehru, C Rajgopalachari (popularly known as Rajaji) became a very strong critic of Nehru and his policies during later years. But Rajgopalachari always maintained that there were differences in the ideology only and Nehru was still the best man for the job. When Nehru died (Nehru was 11 years younger to Rajgopalachari), Rajaji broke down. He said that he opposed Nehru for the various national issues but it was Nehru only who was capable to solve them.

When India decimated Pakistan during 1971 war, the whole opposition was queued up behind Indira Gandhi and applauded her unequivocally.

I remember that during Indira's last stint as the Prime Minister in 1980-84, despite a very bitter past between them during 1975-80, the relationship between Indira and opposition leaders were reasonably amicable.

However, it was during the reign of PV Narasimha Rao, the bipartisan in Indian politics was at its zenith. In 1994, Narasimha Rao sent Salman Khurshid and opposition leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee to argue India's case at the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) in Geneva. Vajpayee's articulateness proved to be astonishingly effective and resulted in the withdrawal of the Pakistan-backed resolution against India. Narasimha Rao minced no words in praising Vajpayee’s efforts.

The deterioration started primarily in 1999 when Vajpayee assumed power. During the UPA's reign in 2004-2014, the situation was no better either but it has literally plummeted vertically ever since Modi has come to power in 2104.

In its bid to revive itself in Gujarat, Congress played an ominous Patel, Dalit, OBC card in Gujarat election. Society would pay a heavy price for such divides nurtured by Congress and other opposition parties for the years to come. Parliament is not being allowed to function session after session on frivolous reasons, on the issues which are state's matter most of the times. There is hardly any great parliamentarian or statesman among current day’s opposition parties, as we had in the past.

The nation is suffering because of political ambition of the politicians. As famously said that, at times good thing comes with few negative riders. So democracy is good but these are the perils associated with it.

The onus is on us the voters to understand this game and don't let politicians take us for a ride.

In Congress, the desperation for coming back to power and to establish Rahul politically is so strong that righteousness and virtuousness have no space now.

I wonder that how human psyche and desires across different time zones resonant with each other. These days, whenever I look at the political slugfest in India, an anecdote from Mahabharata looms in my mind. Before the famous war at Kurukshetra, Vidur told Dhritarashtra, "Lord, your desperate attempt to put your son at throne will not only eradicate you and family but the worst thing is that nation and people are paying and will pay a hefty price for unjustified and directionless ambition of yours." This so very well outlines the current days Congress party/Gandhi scion in particular, and also the other opposition parties as well. Opinion: Nation pays the price for diminishing conduct of opposition parties

The BJP on Monday accused the Congress of playing a “joke” on Dalits with its “farce of a fast” and mocked the opposition party, saying its leaders claim of bringing a change but cannot abstain from one meal and their president Rahul Gandhi cannot wake up in morning even for a day as they are used to “politics of luxury”.

After a picture of Delhi Congress leaders having a meal at a restaurant before they were to sit on a fast at Rajghat “against the alleged caste violence and communalism” went viral, the BJP latched onto it to claim that the opposition party’s “double standards” were exposed and that it had ridiculed Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of ‘satyagrah’.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also took a dig at Rahul Gandhi for turning up at Rajghat at 1 pm while the fast had started at 10.30 am, saying it shows that the Congress chief cannot wake up in the morning as he and his colleagues were used to “politics of luxury”.&nbspHe contrasted it with the “politics of performance” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who, he noted, comes from a common family belonging to a backward caste and has worked to bring Dalits in mainstream socially and economically.

“This is politics of performance versus politics of luxury. You cannot wake up in morning, cannot escape even one meal but you claim of bringing a big change…. You have played a joke on the poor and Dalits while sitting in Rajghat,” he said.

Patra also attacked Rahul Gandhi for calling Modi anti-Dalit, saying the Congress denied Dalits financial inclusion during its long rule and its leaders cannot escape one meal for them.&nbsp“It is the Congress which is anti-Dalit not Modi who economically and socially empowered them with schemes like Jan Dhan and Mudra,” he said.

Referring to the presence of Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler, accused of involvement in anti-Sikh riots, at Rajghat, Patra said that the Congress leaders’ decision to keep them away from dais was an admission of guilt.&nbspHe ridiculed the Congress’ nation-wide fast, saying its leaders had come to the Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial to talk about non-violence but the presence of Kumar and Tytler exposed the party’s “real violent” face.

“The Congress has fallen into its own trap. What we have seen from Rahul Gandhi today is not a fast but the farce of a fast. (It was) an attempt by his party to fast-track his politics to burnish his credentials despite people rejecting him time and again,” Patra told reporters.&nbsp“It was not ‘upwaas’ (fast) but ‘uphaas’ (mockery),” he said.&nbsp“The Congress had today lost in the eye of the people,” he claimed, adding “the masses will answer to its misleading politics in 2019 with truth and the NDA will return with a bigger mandate”.

The “hunger of power” of the Congress and the Gandhi family were exposed, he said, claiming that the opposition party practices one kind of politics before cameras and another behind it.&nbspThe Congress was now doing politics to divide the country for its interests, he claimed.

After the BJP’s allegations, Delhi Congress’ Arvinder Singh Lovely said his party leaders had breakfast well before the protest began and added there was nothing wrong in it.&nbsp“The fast was scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM and we were busy with preparation till late night yesterday. We went for breakfast at around 8 AM. So, there is nothing wrong in it,” Lovely told reporters.

Congress played joke on Dalits with BJP of fast, says BJP

The BJP today warned the Trinamool Congress (TMC) that if the ruling party workers attacked BJP candidates during panchayat polls in the state, it would be paid back in the same coin.

Talking to reporters on the last day of filing nominations for the rural polls to be held in three phases from May 1, BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said the party would fight the panchyat polls with all their strength.

“If the TMC tries to unleash violence on the day of the polls, it will be paid back in the same coin. If they attack us with bombs and pistols, we won’t greet them with a plate of sweets,” he said.

“We have worked hard to ensure that our candidates file their nominations. Now as it is clear that the central forces will not be deployed for panchyat elections. We have to be prepared for all eventuality. We will fight till the end,” Ghosh said.

The Supreme Court today refused to extend the last date for the filing of nominations for panchayat polls saying it could not interfere with the election process.

The top court, however, granted liberty to all candidates to approach the West Bengal State Election Commission for appropriate relief.

The BJP had on March 6 told the apex court that “democracy is being murdered” in West Bengal as the ruling TMC was engaged in large-scale violence and not allowing its candidates to file nominations for the upcoming panchayat polls.

It had also sought availability of nomination papers online, extension of the last date for filing these papers and deployment of paramilitary forces in the state in the run-up to the polls.

The TMC leadership welcomed the apex court’s ruling.

“We have full faith in and respect for judiciary. We requested the State Election Commissioner to ensure free and fair elections and not to give in to the pressure tactics of opposition parties,” TMC secretary-general Partha Chatterjee said.

The panchayat polls are scheduled to be held on May 1, 3, and 5. The votes will be counted on May 8. According to the notification, the last date for filing of nominations is April 9 and the last date of scrutiny of the nominations is April 11.

News brief: Big stories of the day

Delhi MLA Arvinder Singh Lovely today lashed out at BJP leaders for claiming that Congress leaders, before observing a fast at Rajghat in Delhi, ate a restaurant.

Delhi BJP leader Harish Khurana noted earlier that Congress leaders were seen eating at a restaurant in Delhi before sitting on a protest and observing fast at Rajghat over atrocities on Dalits.

Lovely retorted saying that the photograph was taken earlier in the day before 8 am. He further added that the fast is symbolic in nature and will be observed from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm today. It is not an indefinite hunger strike.

He further added that the BJP should focus on running the country rather than looking into what others are eating.

Instead of running country, BJP concentrates on what we eat: Cong's Lovely

Gujarat Patidar quota leader Hardik Patel on Sunday said that "all three of us", referring to Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and OBC leader Alpesh Thakore, was ready to "work in Madhya Pradesh like we did in Gujarat".

He said that he was ready to support the Congress in the MP Assembly polls slated for later this year if the party asked for help, adding that his fight was against "fascist forces which are trying to divide society".

"I have come for a programme of the backward classes. If asked, I would extend support to the Congress. The Congress should project a party face (chief ministerial candidate) in the coming election. All three of us (Jignesh Mewani and Alpesh Thakore being the other two) are ready to work in Madhya Pradesh like we did in Gujarat," he said.

"I am fighting against fascist forces which are trying to divide society and are trying to change the basic concept of the Constitution. I am fighting against these forces to ensure equality for all," Hardik said

He termed demonetisation a big scam and accused the BJP of winning elections by deploying money and muscle power.&nbsp

Later in the evening, while addressing a gathering at Garhakota town of Sagar district, Patel hit out at the BJP saying that it feared exposure of a scam related to its Narmada conservation programme.&nbsp

He alleged that it was this fear that led to the state government granting Minister of State rank to some religious leaders.&nbsp

He claimed that Bundelkhand region, of which Sagar district (where he addressed a gathering) was a part, was facing problems as its people had lost the ability to fight against atrocities.&nbsp

Referring to the incident at Ujjain yesterday where a man threw ink on him at a local hotel, Patel said that the man might have been an "andh bhakt" (diehard supporter) of some BJP leader. "I have forgiven him," Patel added.

Patel alleged that while the BJP had spent Rs 1,200 crore to build a headquarter complex for itself, Lord Rama continued to be be under a tent (referring to the makeshift temple of Ram Lala in Ayodhya) despite the BJP promising, since 1992, to build a magnificent temple there.

Ready to work in Madhya Pradesh the way we did in Gujarat: Hardik Patel

Forget the BJP winning the 2019 polls, even Prime Minister Narendra Modi might lose his Varanasi seat under a united opposition, asserted Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday.

Pegging his confidence on opposition unity, Gandhi said far from the BJP winning the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, even Modi might lose from Varanasi if his party, the SP and the BSP were united against him.

Exuding confidence over roping in and managing alliance partners despite their varied personal and regional aspirations, Gandhi predicted for the current ruling dispensation, a "collapse" not "seen in many years."

"Frankly, I don't see the BJP winning the next election, so in 2019 we will go back to the normal, I sense," he said in reply to a question on "Dalit anger."

"...because there are two basic things, once opposition unity goes above a certain level, it becomes impossible to win elections. Now the opposition unity has gone to a point. It's simple," Gandhi said at an informal media interaction.

Pointing at the opposition unity efforts in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and by the DMK, the Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party in Tamil Nadu, Gandhi asked, "Where are they (BJP) going to win seats?"

And in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab. We will take it over."

"You are going to see a collapse of the style you haven't seen in many years," he said.

Gandhi was on the sixth leg of campaigning as part of the 'Janashirvada Yatra' ahead of the May 12 polls in Karnataka.

Responding to a question doubting the forging of opposition unity amid varied aspirations of each party and their leaders, Gandhi expressed confidence of overcoming it.

"We will manage it. We in the Congress know how to carry people, we are not egotistical people, we don't crush people and we don't destroy people's lives, so we will manage it," he said.

The basic thing is how to get the country out of the "mess that Mr Modi and RSS has put it in," he said.

The Congress president also ruled out the emergence of any third front.

Accusing the RSS of generating anger and hatred, Gandhi alleged that people are being killed for what they are saying and that needs to be put to an end.

"The natural sort of political environment where there is a little bit of acrimony, but not hatred, needs to be restored," he said.

Stating that Modi had a "very good" opportunity after the 2014 election, Gandhi said a lot could have been done for the country.

Terming as "funny" the BJP's confidence of breaking the opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh and claiming that he understands UP politics, Rahul said when the three parties (SP, BSP and Congress) come together, "BJP will win only two seats, that too with luck.

He said even Modi may lose if he stands from Varanasi and the three parties were united against him.

"In fact, I challenge him to stand with three parties united," he added.

The BSP and the SP jointly fought Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats during the recent bypolls, costing the BJP both the seats, vacated respectively by Uttar Pradesh chief minister and deputy chief minister.

Hitting out at Modi and the BJP, the Congress president said they have lost track of running the country.

"You can't run this country as an individual, you have to run this country by listening to it, by working with it... and now after four years, he (Modi) has suddenly lost it, because now the wheels are running on them. Everybody can see that, you can hear it in his speeches," he said.

Responding to a question, Rahul blamed the "mentality" for Modi and BJP losing track.

He said, "...it is the mentality... you stand in front of Basavanna (12th-century social reformer from Karnataka) or Ambedkar, praise them, and then you destroy everything that they stood for..."

"Basavanna is an idea, he is the representative of the idea of Karnataka, you can go and stand in front of his statue as much as you want, but it won't work if you are destroying the idea... so, it is the mentality..." he said.

Sharing his experience in Gujarat, he said those raising "Modi Modi" slogans were nice to him when he met them and claimed they were "paid" for their sloganeering.

The BSP and the SP jointly fought Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats during the recent bypolls, costing the BJP both the seats.

Exuding confidence over roping in and managing alliance partners despite their varied personal and regional aspirations, Gandhi predicted for the current ruling dispensation, a "collapse" not "seen in many years." "Frankly, I don't see the BJP winning the next election, so in 2019 we will go back to the normal, I sense," he said in reply to a question on "Dalit anger." "...because there are two basic things, once opposition unity goes above a certain level, it becomes impossible to win elections. Now the opposition unity has gone to a point. It's simple," Gandhi said at an informal media interaction. Pointing at the opposition unity efforts in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and by the DMK, the Trinamool Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party in Tamil Nadu, Gandhi asked, "Where are they (BJP) going to win seats?" And in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab. We will take it over." "You are going to see a collapse of the style you haven't seen in many years," he said. Forget BJP winning 2019 polls, PM Modi will even lose Varanasi seat if Opposition unites: Rahul Gandhi

Dalits, who are "angry" with the NDA government, will play a key role in deciding the country's next prime minister a year down the line and back Congress president Rahul Gandhi for the coveted slot, party leader Nitin Raut has said.

Newly-appointed chairman of the Congress' SC department Raut said Dalit youth will get attracted to Gandhi's leadership for a positive future than other non-BJP/NDA leaders, including those representing the community.

This is mainly because the Congress chief stands a chance to become the prime minister unlike those leaders, he added.

The former Maharashtra minister also dismissed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent claim that his government has honoured Dalit icon B R Ambedkar like no other previous dispensation. Raut charged Modi and the BJP with issuing such statements only eyeing the community's votes.

Dalits, especially the community youth, are feeling angry under the NDA's regime. They are being denied educational, employment opportunities which never happened when the Congress was in power. This anger will make Dalits play a key role in deciding the next prime minister, Raut said.

He said in the run up to the next Lok Sabha polls, his department will focus hard on uniting as many Dalits as possible under the Congress' umbrella to see Gandhi is propelled to the post of the prime minister.

There are 84 parliamentary seats which are reserved for the scheduled castes across the country. The BJP had won more of these seats than any other party in the 2014 general elections. The Congress could win only 3-4 of these reserved seats, Raut said.

We will try to win maximum seats possible in 2019 based on the works governments led by our party had done for the Dalits. We have records to show that. We will try to unite Dalits, he said.

At a time when Dalit voters are divided and follow several leaders like Jignesh Mevani, Raut said the community members will be attracted to Gandhi nationally as he is more likely to become the prime minister than the former.

He also said Dalits have no option but to look at the Congress, if they don't want BJP at the Centre again given no other party than either of these two will be able to form the next government.

Dalits have accepted, honoured leaders like Mevani or the others. But these leaders are yet to establish their parties nationally. So, they can't be prime minister," Raut said.

Dalits, therefore, will get attracted towards whoever is likely to become a prime minister. It will be our endeavour to see Rahul Ji in that position, he said.

Raut also said his party will work to see that the promises made to Dalits are kept after it comes to power.

Criticising Modi over his comment that his government has honoured Ambedkar more than any other government, Raut said the Dalit icon himself was not supportive of the RSS or Hindu Mahasabha.

What have they (the BJP) given to the members of the community in actual terms? Merely constructing memorials or monuments does not suffice, but you have to deliver for people. So, what they are saying is basically eyeing votes, he said.

Jignesh Mewani asks Karnataka youth to hurl chair in PM's election campaign, BJP files complaint

After a washout of the budget session of Parliament that ended Friday, the BJP and the Congress blamed each other for the impasse and announced countrywide fasts as protest even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the opposition party of taking parliamentary proceedings "to a new low".

While Modi announced that NDA MPs would hold a fast on April 12 to protest the opposition's behaviour in Parliament, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi told party workers to hold a fast on April 9 to "expose" the BJP's "lies" on the issue.

Addressing BJP MPs on the party's foundation day, Modi kept the Congress in his line of fire and spelt out an exercise by party lawmakers and ministers for reaching out to villages with substantial Dalit and tribal population through implementation of his government's seven key welfare schemes.

Modi at the BJP parliamentary party meeting accused the Congress of paralysing Parliament proceedings during the Budget Session that ended Friday, and said it was "throttling" democracy and "abusing" people's mandate.

Briefing reporters on the meeting, Union minister Ananth Kumar quoted the prime minister as saying that while the BJP's strength has been rising, the opposition, especially the Congress, has resorted to "divisive and negative" politics.
Parliamentary proceedings stooped to a new low due to the conduct of the Congress, Modi said.

All BJP MPs will observe a day long fast on April 12 to protest the opposition's conduct in Parliament, he said.

On the other hand, Gandhi directed party workers to organise nationwide fast to protect and promote harmony among various sections on April 9.

In a letter to all PCC chiefs, party general secretary Ashok Gehlot said "peace and harmony have been embodied in the soul of this country and the responsibility to uphold it lies with the Congress".

He said what has happened on April 2 during Bharat bandh was very unfortunate and it was very dangerous for the social fabric of this country and blamed BJP-ruled Centre and state governments for not initiating steps to curb violence neither to protect the fraternity.

"Therefore, it becomes even more important for the Congress to lead the nation in tough time," he said.

At the AICC briefing, senior party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Anand Sharma hit back at the BJP and held it responsible for not letting Parliament function and termed as a "gimmick" and "drama" the move by NDA MPs to forgo their salary for 23 days when Parliament did not function.

The Congress leaders said their party MPs had met Rajya Sabha chairman requesting him that the house should not be prorogued so that it can be reconvened for two more weeks to discuss issues of national importance as they could not be taken up due to disruptions.

Sharma alleged that the BJP and RSS were spreading hatred in society through their "divisive" agenda. The Congress "will expose it" and their chief Rahul Gandhi has appealed to the public to maintain peace and harmony in society, he said.

Kharge also alleged that it was the government and its allies which were disrupting the Lok Sabha and questioned why members causing disturbance were not suspended and the no-confidence motions taken up for discussion.

The government and its allies were "orchestrating" disruptions and blaming the Congress for it, he alleged.

"Government encouraged its allies to disrupt proceedings which resulted in the Houses being adjourned day after day in the session, within seconds of the ruckus created at government's behest."

"We gave prior notice under the rules of Parliament. The Government is sole responsible for disruption of parliament and now 'the thief is blaming the cop'", Kharge said.

Sharma said, "one thing we want to make absolutely clear with truth and force of facts at our command that Congress is not responsible for the disruption. We wanted debate, we wanted accountability and we shall continue to demand that."

"Today we have told the Chairman of Rajya Sabha to inform the Government that we are willing, do not prorogue the Houses they have been adjourned only sine die. Reconvene the Parliament for two weeks or ten days to debate these five issues and to legislate, bring the important Laws.

"We have said the ball is in their court. This is what we have conveyed today and we are informing you," he said.&nbsp

Congress, BJP blame each other for Parliament logjam, announce fasts in protest

The washed out second leg of Parliament's Budget Session ended Friday as both Houses were adjourned sine die, capping a month of relentless disruptions and stated to be the least productive since 2000 with nearly 250 working hours being wasted.

As a blame game erupted between the BJP and the Congress over the opposition protests that paralysed both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the rival parties announced protest fasts by their MPs and workers next week. An anguished Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said the budget session was "eminently forgettable".

The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) recommended prorogation of the Budget Session of Parliament to President Ram Nath Kovind.

The Lok Sabha was also unable to take up multiple opposition notices for no-confidence motion against the Modi government with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan saying there is no order in the House which witnessed protests by various parties.
Mahajan said the members should keep in mind the larger interests of the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present in the House.

The last day of the session was also marred by protests by AIADMK and Congress members over setting up of the Cauvery river management board as well as by TDP members demanding special status for Andhra Pradesh.

Mahajan also said she wanted to take up the notices for no-confidence motion. "I am sorry... If you don't want to take up (notices for no-confidence motion)," she said and proceeded to read out a brief summary of the Budget session and its second leg before adjourning sine die.

In the Rajya Sabha, Naidu even wondered if the fears of those who doubted the need for a Second Chamber during the debates in the Constituent Assembly were coming true. "Let us not be a party to this House becoming a 'clog(impediment) in the wheel of progress''.

"I am pained to note that it(the session) turned out to be an eminently forgettable one on account of utter disregard of the mandate of this important parliamentary institution and its responsibilities and missed opportunities," he said.

The disruptions and adjournments were caused by protests over issues like special status to Andhra Pradesh, bank scams, demand for Cauvery water management board, vandalising of statues, review of the recent Supreme Court order on SC/ST Act and law and order situation in Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh.

The second leg of the Budget session, that started on March 5, had 22 sittings that were mostly disrupted.

Speaker Mahajan said a total of 127 hours and 45 minutes were affected by "interruptions and forced adjournments" while Naidu said the Rajya Sabha lost over 121 hours.

Just five bills, including the crucial Finance Bill 2018 for which the Budget Session is convened, were passed and five were introduced during the Budget session in the Lok Sabha.

Besides, The Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, 2017 and The Specific Relief (Amendment) Bill, 2017 were among those passed.

There was lot of drama outside the Parliament too on the concluding day of the Budget session with several ministers and ruling alliance MPs protesting near the iconic statue of the meditating Mahatma inside the complex, often a site of protest by opposition lawmakers.

According to PRS Legislative Research, "this was the least productive Budget session for both Houses since 2000".

During the session on an average, Lok Sabha worked for 21 per cent of its scheduled time, while Rajya Sabha worked for 27 per cent, it said.

According to data provided by Parliamentary Affairs minister Ananth Kumar, the productivity of the Lok Sabha(LS) was 134 per cent, and that of the Rajya Sabha(RS) around 96 per cent during the brief first part of the session. The first part had seven LS and eight RS sittings.

But the second part of the session saw productivity taking a nose dive due to daily disruptions and adjournments. The productivity of the LS was four per cent and that of the RS eight per cent, the minister said.

"The productivity of the complete Budget session was 23 per cent for the LS and 28 per cent for the RS," he said.

Accusing the Congress of taking parliamentary proceedings "to a new low" with its conduct, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a fast by BJP MPs on April 12 to protest the impasse "caused" by the opposition party in Parliament.

In a counter-offensive, the Congress said its workers would hold a day-long fast at all state and district headquarters on April 9 to expose the BJP's "lies" on various issues.

Snakes, mongooses, cats, dogs, all have united against us: Amit Shah

Terming Pakistan a "nasur" (ulcer), Uttar Pradesh minister Srikant Sharma said if troops of the neighbouring country fire on Indian soldiers, it should be retaliated with "a rain of firing".

The minister said this on Wednesday during a conclave here organised by an all-India traders' body.

"Pakistan is a 'nasur' (ulcer). Soldiers have been instructed to maintain restraint. However, if firing starts from the other side, there should be a rain of firing till the enemy is forced to take shelter in bunkers," he said.

The Uttar Pradesh Power minister also discussed the expansion of the All India Udyog Vyapaar Mandal's (AIUVM) traders identification programme.

Shopkeepers, vendors, and traders under the programme, launched in 2006, are given identity cards, which Sharma said "instills a sense of safety" among members of the business community.

"The government will cooperate with the traders' body and help it take the programme to every district in the state. The Stariya Vyapari Dukandar Parichay Patra Yojana (trader identification scheme) instills a sense of safety in the trader community," he said.

State vice president, AIUVM, Murari Agrawal, said the programme, currently is limited to only four districts in Uttar Pradesh, now efforts are being made to take it all the districts.

Traders and shopkeepers are safe in BJP-ruled states such as Uttar Pradesh, Sharma claimed.

"The magnitude of corruption, in the previous government in the state was so big that traders felt insecure. Power brokers, in the previous government, were engaged in kidnapping for ransom," he alleged.

The minister also condemned the recent incidents of violence during "Bharat Bandh".

The pan-Indian shutdown was called by Dalit outfits against the alleged dilution in the provisions of the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the Supreme Court.

The Power minister assured that electricity supply infrastructure in Mathura was being improved so that pilgrims coming here do not face problems.

Claiming that there was uniform supply of power in the state, he said, "Gone are the days when the privilege of round the clock power supply was limited to four or five districts.

The Supreme Court today said it will pass orders on April 9 on the BJP West Bengal unit's plea alleging that its candidates are not being allowed to file their nomination papers for the panchayat polls next month.

In its plea, BJP sought an extension of the last date of nomination, which is April 9, and online availability of nomination papers.

A bench of Justices R K Agrawal and A M Sapre said, "We are reserving verdict for April 9."

During the hearing, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the West Bengal unit of the BJP, said democracy is being murdered in the state as candidates are not being allowed to file their nomination papers and there is large-scale violence.

The West Bengal panchayat elections are scheduled to be held on May 1, 3, and 5 and the votes are to be counted on May 8.

According to the notification, the last date of filing nominations is April 9 and the last date of scrutiny of the nominations is April 11.

The plea alleged that block development officers, appointed as assistant panchayat electoral registration officers by the West Bengal State Election Commission, are refusing to give nomination forms to BJP candidates.

The West Bengal State Election Commission is the authority tasked with superintendence, direction and control of the preparation of electoral rolls for, and the conduct of, all elections to panchayats and municipalities.

West Bengal panchayat polls: Supreme Court to pass order on BJP's plea

The Congress on Thursday termed the BJP’s proposed rally in Mumbai on April 6 to commemorate its 38th Foundation Day as “rubbing salt into the wounds of farmers”.&nbsp

Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant, addressing reporters, said that the ruling BJP was spending “lavishly” on this rally despite the fact that 13,000 farmers had committed suicide, fiscal deficit had touched Rs 15,000 crore and unemployment had risen sharply during its regime. He criticised the Maharashtra government for excluding 50 lakh farmers from the ambit of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Shetkari Sanman Yojana, popularly referred to as farm loan waiver scheme.

He said that the government did not want too many farmers covered under the waiver scheme as it had launched the programme “half-heartedly”.

“In the month of January 47.46 lakh, farmers were included in the green list as eligible for the waiver and Rs 23,102 crore was approved. However, in the list brought out on April 3, the number of eligible farmers came down to 46.52 lakh and the approved amount dipped to Rs 18,904 crore,” he claimed.

He said that the government should apply to farmers the same yardstick based on which state Labour and Skills Development Minister Sambhaji Nilangekar got a waiver of Rs 51 crore on a loan amount of Rs 76 crore under the One Time Settlement scheme.

Earlier, on March 28, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had defended Nilangekar in the Legislative Assembly stating that he was just a guarantor for the loan and the OTS was done as per RBI guidelines.

The loan, amounting to Rs 49 crore with interest, was taken by a private firm in 2009 and 2011 and was later declared as a non-performing asset.

Petrol and diesel prices are on an uptrend amid firming global crude prices. The rates of the two fuels have been so far increased 14 times since March 18, 2018.

At current level, petrol prices are up Rs 3.98 per litre in Delhi, Rs 3.94 per litre in Kolkata, Rs 3.93 per litre in Mumbai and Rs 4.19 per litre in Chennai so far this year. Diesel rates are up Rs. 5.18 per litre, Rs 5.21 per litre, Rs 5.75 per litre and Rs 5.55 per litre respectively.

The OMCs while deciding the prices of fuel, take into consideration the performance of international crude oil, adding government’s excise duty and various state’s value added tax (VAT), however, currently the state-owned OMCs face a difficult time in regards to trimming down fuel prices as they have limited room for it, which results in consumers ending up paying higher petrol and diesel prices.

The reason for the hike in fuel prices are due to the surge in international crude oil prices and the reluctance of government in cutting excise duty and state’s VAT.

On Wednesday, Finance minister Dr TM Thomas Isaac refused to cut sales tax on petroleum saying that even the smallest change tax on petroleum products will decimate the states impoverished economy.

Presently, the state is facing a deficit in tax revenue. Hence the state cannot afford to lose this revenue and an appropriate decision will be taken ...

Gandhi previously attacked Modi saying that when UPA was in power, the oil price was $140 per barrel and today it is half in the international market.

"When in the international market petrol price was coming down, you are paying high. In whose pocket is the money going? Your money is being looted from you and is being given to 10/12 rich people," he said.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will get 'a clear majority' in the southern state.

"BJP will get a clear majority in the upcoming elections in Karnataka. No divisive politics will work this time," the minister told ANI outside Parliament House.

Singh's comment comes after dates for Karnataka Assembly elections were announced by the Election Commission of India today and also in the wake of gaffes committed by party chief Amit Shah and IT cell head Amit Malviya giving the opposition ammo to launch a scathing attack.

While, Malviya revealed the date of Karnataka assembly poll on Twitter, 15 minutes before the official announcement came from the EC, Shah, in a slip of tongue said the government led by BS Yeddyurappa — the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate in Karnataka – was the most corrupt.

The elections for the 224 assembly seats will be held on May 12, and the results will be declared on May 15.

While the Congress party is trying to retain power in Karnataka, the BJP is pulling all stops to wrestle the southern state into its fold.

BJP will get clear majority in Karnataka polls: Rajnath Singh

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today met NCP chief Sharad Pawar and leaders of some regional parties as well as NDA ally Shiv Sena to explore a "federal front" option to take on the BJP in the next Lok Sabha polls, mooting a "one-to-one" fight in all the states.'

According to a senior NCP leader, who did not want to be identified, Banerjee at the same time favoured a front without involving the Congress.

The Trinamool Congress(TMC) supremo sought to rally the regional parties against the NDA even as Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who mooted a non-Congress, non-BJP coalition in national politics, said the alternative being proposed by him would be a "people's front of India".

Coming down heavily on the NDA-led Centre, Banerjee said issues like demonetisation and bank frauds have affected people at the grassroot level and that it was time for the BJP to "pack up and go".

She asserted that all opposition parties should work together to oust the BJP.

Banerjee, who is in Delhi for three days, had an hour-long meeting with Pawar and other NCP leaders at his office in Parliament.

Pawar had earlier in the day denied that a meeting over dinner with opposition parties was scheduled tonight.

"There is no meeting, there is no dinner," Pawar had said in response to a question whether there will be a dinner meeting with the West Bengal chief minister.

Banerjee, who also met leaders from other opposition parties like the TDP, which recently walked out of the BJP-led NDA over the issue of special status to Andhra Pradesh, TRS, SP, RJD, BJD, NC and JMM, once again emphasised that the need of the hour is have a state-wise strategy to defeat the BJP.

She met Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut along with other Sena members of Parliament triggering speculation in political circles. The Sena, though a part of the ruling NDA, has been critical of Maharashtra and central governments.

"All opposition parties should work together. It should be a one-to-one fight against the BJP. All opposition parties should help the strongest one in the state against the BJP," Banerjee told reporters.

On the issue of opposition unity, Banerjee hailed the alliance between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh and said that all opposition parties should come together to help the alliance.

"If Akhilesh and Mayawati call a meeting in Lucknow, we will all go. We should help the parties where they are strong," she said.

Raut denied that Shiv Sena was joining any front, but said that the Shiv Sena and Banerjee have "a very warm" relationship and there were certain things which Banerjee wanted to convey to Uddhav Thackeray.
Banerjee later said that she "respects" Shiv Sena.

"At least it does not do politics with a gun in their hand. There is no party more communal than the BJP," Banerjee said.

The chief minister will also meet rebel BJP leaders Shatrughan Sinha, Yashwant Sinha and former Union minister Arun Shourie tomorrow.

Though Banerjee is said to be favouring a Front without the Congress, she did say she was in touch with its president Rahul Gandhi. TMC leaders said she is planning to meet Sonia Gandhi.

Replying to a query, Banerjee said she has been exchanging messages with Rahul Gandhi
According to a senior NCP leader, Banerjee favoured forming a "federal front" to defeat the BJP without involving the Congress.

"She said that a non-Congress federal front should be formed to take on the BJP in the assembly as well as the Lok Sabha elections. She feels that if the Congress becomes a part of the opposition front, then many parties like the BJD, TDP would not join the alliance. But she urged the NCP leader to also speak to other opposition parties to know their views," the leader, who did not want to be identified, said.

Later NCP leader Praful Patel, while briefing the media on the meeting, said that both the leaders agreed that there should be "maximum unity" among opposition parties to take on the BJP.

"The situation will evolve in the coming months for assembly and Lok Sabha polls. There are of course a lot of different views on what kind of approach should be taken.

"But certainly what the leaders discussed was that opposition unity should be maximum possible as has been witnessed today in Uttar Pradesh where the BSP and the SP have started working together and therefore it is important that political differences among opposition should be resolved,"Patel told reporters.

Time for BJP to pack up and go: Mamata Banerjee

A company — TshirtBhaiya.com — has begun to sell T-shirts depicting the Kashmiri man tied to an army jeep in 2017. Farooq Ahmad Dar had been tied to the jeep by an army major, who said he had done so to get himself and his men to safety.&nbsp

There had reportedly been stone pelters in the vicinity.&nbsp

Dar had effectively been used as a human shield.&nbsp

TshirtBhaiya.com is reportedly linked to a member of the BJP — Tejinder Bagga, who is spokesperson of the Delhi unit of the BJP. Bagga says the T-shirt is meant to boost the morale of the Indian Army and to allow people to wear their "patriotism on the chest".

The Kashmiris however view it as provocation, and believe it will make the Kashmir situation even more &nbspunstable.&nbsp

Dar's lawyer, Ahsan Untoo, meanwhile says they will be filing a defamation suit against the T-shirt's promoters.&nbsp

"It's simply provocation, those acts make the life of that person miserable if he is not given justice he should not be torched with every passing day, A man tied to jeep and then dragged in dozens of village how can that be justified, and can this boost the moral of Indian Army? We have going to file a defamation case in this matter," said Untoo.

The T-shirt and its sale have also been condemned by political parties.&nbsp

The National Conference and the Congress said the Indian Army is a "big institution" and that these small acts will not boost their moral but will instead dent their credibility. They added that "we all are nationalists living in Kashmir and know how to boost the morale of the army".&nbsp

"We all know how to boost the moral of army but this is not the way, we want peace but these acts are helping anti-national elements, it will provoke youth more," said Taj Mohudeen, senior Congress leader.

"It's a highly condemnable act, it will instigate more trouble and will provoke people in Kashmir, state government had failed to give justice and now they sprinkle salt on wounds," said Junaid Mattu, National Conference spokesperson.

Dar had been tied to the jeep on April 9 last during by-elections in central Kashmir's Budgam village. Video of the incident soon went viral.&nbsp

There had reportedly been a note tied to his chest saying: "This will be fate of stone pelters".&nbsp

A massive controversy had erupted, with the army saying Dar had been used as a human shield to safeguard polling staff and EVMs. The army officer responsible for tying Dar to the jeep — Major Leetul Gogoi — was later commended by the army.

Dar, through his lawyer who is also a human rights activist, approached the state human rights commission which directed the state government to compensate Dar. The state government however refused, saying they had no scheme under which they could compensate Dar.&nbsp

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti at the time asked J&K Police to file a report on video. Police launched their investigation and filed an FIR ,&nbsp

Electoral commitment reigns supreme in Indian politics but the desperation that politicians in Karnataka have shown for electoral benefits is as good as playing with fire. Now the Karnataka government has accepted the proposal of Justice Nagamohan Das Committee and decided to forward it to the Centre to make the final call on the issue, the outcome is anyone's guess.

The ramification will be felt nationally as the debate mutates from a sect's right to secede and acquire a separate identity to question of division of Hinduism into lesser denominations. On top of it, the larger Veer Shaiva community is opposed to this idea though Lingayats say that they are different from them.

After the unceremonious sacking of Karnataka CM Virendra Patil by the Congress government, the Lingayat community never voted for the Congress in-block since then. Today the community stands behind the BJP but with this move, political blocks in Karnataka will no doubt be rearranged. The decision might suit the BJP nationally but in the state it will have to redefine its position.

Lingayats have a substantial presence in Karnataka and can play a make-or-break role in assembly elections. Even former BJP chief minister Yeddyurappa belongs to the Lingayat community. The birth of religions has never been an easy process in any part of the world as it involves the process of differentiation and codification which is always marked with social upheaval and violence.

New religious ecosystems are always linked to an idea of God, society and salvation which stands in opposition to the existing practice.

But in Karnataka, the Lingayat churning has acquired an overt electoral colour. Caste reservations or linguistic reorganisation of states in the past too have been products of powerful agitations, but the demand for a separate religious status through a political agitation and mass rallies is a first in post-independent India.

Hinduism or as it is sometimes referred - Sanatan Dharma - is one of the five acknowledged religions in the Constitution of India. The Constitution provides freedom to practice and propagate religion in the country and this is enshrined as a fundamental right. In this context, the movement and protest in Karnataka is neither illegal nor outside the civilizational ethos of the subcontinent.

The difference this time is that politicians in Karnataka have decided to play with a social movement within Hinduism whose attempt was to establish an egalitarian society opposed to the prevalent caste structure and upper caste practices.

Hinduism over time has seen the rise and fall of various sects which are primarily described as sampradayas. In this context, Lingayats say that they have been different from 12th century AD and also want to be differentiated from Veershaivas, who they feel are using the word "Lingayats" far too loosely.

Broadly, reform movements through centuries have made an impact on Hinduism, but eventually become part of the larger Hindu family. The ability to absorb and live peacefully with differences is one of the strengths of Hinduism.

With political manoeuvring, it opens up a Pandora's box whose impact can be constitutional, civilizational and political. It will be constitutional because any addition will have to be legislated and the matter will undergo legal scrutiny. It is civilizational because after Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism, Lingayats will become the fourth religion to be born in India out of a legal and political process and not through social negotiation with other religious cosmologies.

For example, the birth of Sikhism was bloody and led to sacrifices by the Gurus who led the faith and subsequently codified it. In the Lingayat’s context, the issue was examined a legal luminary and will be followed up by political luminaries at Centre.

The political impact of the Lingayat demand being accepted would be far more pervasive. It will reduce the demographic and numerical strength of Hinduism in Karnataka and secession will open the door to other sects to be recognised as a separate religion.

It can be argued that the strength of Hinduism has been its ability to absorb dissent by creating subspaces like sects which can be independent organizationally and socially, but still share common cultural codes of worship and life in general with Hinduism.

Though the context was different the "Communal Award" announced by the British for a separate electorate touched the same nerve against which Mahatma Gandhi fasted. The time and subject is different but the context remains the same. The party which would pander to this may win Karnataka but will lose India hands down for the polarisation it will create.

Politicians should remember that only the Goddess rides the tiger.

Opinion: Lingayat row - Only Goddess rides the Tiger

There is state of political upheaval these days in the nation. Narendra Modi is standing tall and firm and he has sent ripples of insecurity among all political parties. Leaders are worried about their future. There is state of panic among parties opposed to BJP and everybody is willing to go to any extent to secure his political future.

Sworn enemies are coming close and burying the hatchet deep. Just now, eternal die-hard enemies the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party joined hands for Gorakhpur & Phulpur by-elections.

Ideologies and official party lines have gone for a toss. Raj Thackeray and Sharad Pawar are exploring each other for a possible tie-up. More bizarre is the fact that Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on Uddhav Thackeray when she visited Mumbai recently. This is ground-breaking as both parties have ideologies which are diametrically opposite to each other, literally.

Regional satraps have their own ambitions. Everybody is trying to become the anti-Modi crusader.

But it is very much visible that in all this jugglery Congress is going to be the biggest loser in days to come. It was so very well manifested in the recent Phulpur & Gorakhpur bypolls. In Phulpur and Gorakhpur during general elections in 2014, Congress begged a six per cent and four per cent votes. Forty five months down the line, in the recent bypolls, when there was a mass shifting of votes from the BJP's share, Congress's vote share further plummeted to an unbelievable two and & 2.6 per cent respectively.

So even if we consider a case where voters get alienated from BJP, they don't see Congress as an option.

The game of politics is simple. You need to keep some compelling reason alive for voters to vote for you. This compelling reason is of two types - either you generate a feeling among voters on macro-level i.e. on the broad national level, or you should have the grip on the votes due to regional reasons.

Take the case of BJP. BJP commands vote on both the accounts. People believe that BJP is a strong organisation with strong central leadership and thus it succeeds. Moreover, since BJP has strong regional presence and leadership (like UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, Madhya Paradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh) and in most part of India BJP connects with voters well on regional issues/sentiments, it commands votes on this aspect too.

Regional parties like Shiv Sena, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Telugu Desam Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal will keep floating for the time to come as they somehow or other will keep a connection on the ground with their understanding of the regional issues and their strong cadre at the grassroot level.

Congress fails miserably on both the accounts. They at this point in time, are far from being a national alternative under the almost non-existence central leadership. Over the years, weak leadership at the top has also resulted in steep depletion of its cadre across the nation. Barring Punjab, Rajasthan and to an extent Karnataka, Congress has completely lost base on the ground. The loss has gone to an extent and to a point that it is now more or less irreversible.

In this scenario, a united front under the leadership of Congress (read Rahul Gandhi) is highly improbable. Regional parties know the political acumen and patronage of Rahul Gandhi and simply shy away from any association with them. Taking a cue from the SP-Congress tie-up last year in UP assembly poll, regional parties now realise that any association with Congress will only weaken their regional selling points among voters. The crux is that regional parties may be interested to shake hand with anybody, but Congress.

So the way politics is going on these days and the way regional parties are trying to keep themselves afloat amid the Modi wave, it is likely that Congress will be left alone in the race and votes will get polarised towards BJP and regional parties in days to come.

It is high time that Congress leadership smells the coffee before it gets too late. By answering the questions of gatherings in Singapore and Malaysia, the Congress president will not garner support back home. He needs to make his party relevant for those who really matter i.e. Indian voters.

Even if voters get alienated from BJP, they don't see Congress as an option.

Opinion: In current anti-Modi rhetoric by regional parties, Congress tends to be the biggest loser
