<p>Considering the power of cinema and how it can influence society and especially the young minds of the nation, the 55th International Film Festival India 2024 organized a panel discussion on women’s safety and Indian cinema. The panel comprised of filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, actress Bhumi Pednekar, actress Khushboo Sundar and actress Suhasini Maniratnam and was moderated by Vani Tripathi Tikoo.</p>

<p>While the conversation revolved around the portrayal of women on-screen and the safety of women in the workplace, especially on the film set, Bhumi pointed out how she found a safe environment while working on her debut film and all the following films after that.</p>

<p>Bhumi Pednekar said, “My debut film was really very special because the film truly questions the status quo. Being born into a family that was fairly liberal, until I started working, I did not know about the sexism that exists in the workplace. Of course, my father was against my decision of joining the film industry because he felt it’s a big bad world. I wish he knew that the world of cinema and our film industry is really a great place to work. I feel more safe and protected when I am on a film set than anywhere outside.”</p>

<p>While the casting couch was also spoken about during the session, filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who is known for crafting powerful female characters in his films, pointed out an interesting perspective.</p>

<p>Imtiaz Ali said, “One cannot increase the opportunity for themselves by compromising or giving in to the casting couch. There is no assurance that one will get a project based on that. Yes, there will be a lot of people who will come to exploit her, but her career might just also be compromised. If a girl can say no and stand up for her self-respect and dignity, that also helps her to earn respect. If a woman is ready to compromise, even I will think twice before taking the person seriously. I, as a director, also have to respect her to cast her. So, one should not be in that delusion that a budding actor can create opportunity by compromising. In reality, I have only seen the opposite of that.”</p>

<p>The ongoing International Film Festival India (IFFI), Goa, is screening more than 270 films from around 81 countries this year. The marketplace, Film Bazaar is also happening alongside IFFI which has a wonderful lineup of films at various stages of filmmaking that buyers and sellers can choose from.</p>

<p>From her debut in the movie `Dum Laga Ke Haisha,` actor Bhumi Pednekar has become a promising face in the Bollywood industry giving hit movies back to back. However, the actor feels that she is still the same, vulnerable, ambitious girl and success has not changed her even a bit.</p>

<p>"I am the same girl. Honestly, I have not changed much. Success has not managed to change me! I am still very vulnerable, ambitious, still have stars in my eyes, and have huge dreams. This has been, I think, my biggest push in life because I was young when I decided I wanted to be an actor," said the `Bala` actor.</p>

<p>The 30-year-old actor already has an impressive array of roles under her list, with movies including `Son Chiriya`, `Shubh Mangal Saavdhan`, `Toilet: Ek Prem Katha`, `Pati, Patni Aur Woh`, `Saand Ki Aankh`, and more.</p>

<p>"I want to do the work that I want to do and want to carve a separate space for myself. I don`t want to be a part of the rat race and I had such a clear vision about it," the actor added.</p>

<p>Recalling her days at the Yash Raj Films, Pednekar said: "I am so fortunate that I had the opportunities and it all started with that one job at Yash Raj Films. When I started with them, I was all of 17, I didn`t know what I was doing."</p>

<p>"I was honestly thinking of going abroad back then for studies. I randomly went to that interview because I knew I had to start working otherwise my parents will send me off abroad for further education and my life changed. There was no stopping after that!" she explained.</p>

<p>Lately, Pednekar launched an anti-spitting campaign that aims at educating people, in an attempt to bring the nation together in the fight against COVID-19.She also has been advocating for nature conservation through her breakthrough initiative `Climate Warrior`.</p>

<p>Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, Bhumi said Climate Warrior is starting a campaign, called One Wish For The Earth.</p>

What our campaign endeavours to do is get thought leaders from my industry to tell the world what is the 'one wish they have for the earth'," Bhumi said in a statement.</p>

<p>Bhumi said she aims to bring more awareness about the issue of climate change.&nbsp;"Climate change, as a concept, is still not considered as a real issue today by a lot of people. There are such varied and grave climatic issues that are happening across the world which people are not even realising like increase of famines, forest fires, droughts, floods, melting ice caps, sea levels increasing, food and crop getting destroyed, heat waves across countries and continents, etc," Bhumi said.</p>

<p>The 30-year-old actor said she wants every citizen of the country to become a climate warrior and do their bit for the cause which poses a threat to the future generations.</p>

<p>"Climate warrior is an initiative that is very close to my heart. It aims to focus on awareness building and engaging with the youth across India so that we become more conscious of our climate and environment, to encourage passionate advocacy for its conservation and protection, and makes us think towards making environment-friendly life choices," Bhumi added.</p>

<p>On the work front, Bhumi will next be seen in ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’. She will also star in ‘Durgavati’ as well as in Karan Johar's multi-starrer ‘Takht’.</p>
