Marvel Studios superhero movie "Avengers: Endgame" will claim the top of the global box office charts by Sunday, distributor Walt Disney Co said.

"Endgame" ticket sales will overtake the $2.789 billion collected worldwide by James Cameron's 2009 science-fiction epic "Avatar," Disney said in a statement released on Saturday as it presented a new slate of films to fans at San Diego Comic-Con.

"Endgame," released in theatres in April, is the culmination of a story told in 22 Marvel films that have drawn crowds to cinemas for a decade.

The movie stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and others as a group of superheroes battling the villain Thanos, played by Josh Brolin.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told fans at Comic-Con that "Endgame" was poised to reach the box office milestone. He also said "Endgame" probably would eventually lose the title to Cameron's next film.

Cameron is scheduled to release four "Avatar" sequels starting in December 2021. Disney this year acquired the "Avatar" franchise with its purchase of film and TV assets from Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox.

‘Avatar’, the worlds biggest film sits at $2.78 billion while ‘Endgame’ has crossed $2.74 billion. It was stuck at $2.73 billion for a bit, due to its slow pace at the box office.&nbsp;

Owing to a tough fight with the more recently released films, some from Disney’s kitty itself has slowed Endgame’s run at the cash registers.&nbsp;

Endgame has made $830.49 million in the US and $2.742 billion worldwide. Avatar’s record stands at $2.788 billion. Endgame, according to Forbes, will not beat ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ US record, $937 million total, in addition to falling short of Avatar’s record, barring ‘a miracle or a re-release’.

Some believe that the film will be able to beat ‘Avatar’ if ‘Endgame’ gets a re-release sometime later. There have been reports that Disney might consider releasing it at the end of the year as part of their big Oscars campaign for the film. Reports suggest that the film could possibly return to theatres in late 2019 or early 2020.

We have seen in the past how re-releases of major hits like ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘Titanic’ have raked in hundreds of millions of dollars.
