<p>A new asteroid crater has been found approximately 400km off the coast of Guinea in Western Africa which could be the dinosaur killer's baby cousin.</p>

<p>Scientists&nbsp;believe that the asteroid created an impact crater with a diameter of 8.5km more than 300m below the seabed.</p>

<p>Dr Uisdean Nicholson from Heriot-Watt University identified the hidden depression when he was analysing seismic survey data to better understand past climatic changes on Earth.</p>

<p>Recording the different layers of rock and sediment underground, the surveys are frequently obtained by oil and gas prospectors.</p>

<p>Nicholson told BBC that "Nadir's shape is diagnostic of an asteroid impact. It's got a raised rim surrounding a central uplift area, and then layers of debris that extend outwards."</p>

<p>When an asteroid slammed into what is now the Gulf of Mexico 66 million years ago it wiped out dinosaurs and this particular study has raised the question of whether the Earth was bombarded on that terrible day by more than one space rock.</p>

<p>Throwing dusty material into the sky, the asteroid that created the Chicxulub Crater in the Gulf of Mexico is estimated to have been about 12km across.</p>

<p>Dr Veronica Bray from the University of Arizona said, "Our simulations suggest this crater was caused by the collision of a 400m-wide asteroid in 500-800m of water."</p>

<p>Amid speculation that the impactor that created Boltysh Crater in Ukraine may also be related to the Chicxulub, Nicholson's team has to be cautious about tying it to Nadir.</p>

<p>Highlighting the possibility that Nadir might have struck the planet a million or two years on either side of the Mexican cataclysm, professor Sean Gulick said that to find out whether they are the same or not the rocks from the west African crater are inspected in the lab.</p>

<p>The experiment will be conducted on Trojan asteroids that can be wanderers in the solar system or material left over from their home planet's formation. They become ensnared by the planetary gravitational grip and subsequently orbit the sun along the same path as that planet.</p>

<p>"The effectiveness of the approach depends on the time to intercept and size of the asteroid, but allows for effective defense against asteroids in the multi-hundred-meter diameter class and could virtually eliminate the threat of mass destruction caused by these threats," Lubin explains.</p>

<p>"Compared to other threat reduction scenarios, this approach represents an extremely cost-effective, testable, and deployable approach with a logical roadmap of development and testing. Pre-deployment of the system into orbit or a lunar base allows for rapid response on the order of less than a day if needed," Lubin said.</p>

<p>"The great advantage of this approach is that it allows for terminal defense in the event of short warning times and target distance mitigation where orbital deflection is not feasible," said Lubin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Even intercepts as close as the Moon with intercept times of a few hours prior to impact are viable."</p>

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has also launched a test mission DART spacecraft that they hope will alter an asteroid's trajectory with sheer kinetic force, plowing into it at high speed to nudge the space boulder off course just enough to keep our planet out of harm's way.</p>

<p>The asteroid that DART is aiming for poses no actual threat and is tiny compared with the cataclysmic Chicxulub asteroid that struck Earth some 66 million years ago, leading to extinction of the dinosaurs. But scientists say smaller asteroids are far more common and of greater theoretical concern in the near term.</p>

<p>DART's target is an asteroid "moonlet" the size of a football stadium that orbits a chunk of rock five times larger in a binary asteroid system named Didymos, the Greek word for twin.</p>

<p>The team behind DART, short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, chose the Didymos system because its relative proximity to Earth and dual-asteroid configuration make it ideal for observing the results of the impact.</p>

<p>The plan is to fly the DART spacecraft directly into the moonlet, called Dimorphos, at 15,000 miles per hour (24,000 kph), bumping it hard enough to shift its orbital track around the larger asteroid.</p>

NASA's Lucy mission to begin voyage to Trojan asteroids

<p>NASA researchers have said that asteroid Bennu, which is&nbsp;classified as a potentially hazardous object, has a chance of hitting the Earth.</p>

<p>Asteroids are among the leftover debris from the solar system's formation some 4.5 billion years ago.</p>

<p>Bennu, located over 100 million miles from Earth and whose acorn-shaped body formed in the early days of our solar system, could hold clues to the origins of life on Earth, scientists say.</p>

<p data-testid="paragraph-7">OSIRIS-REx, a NASA spacecraft, spent two years near Bennu, an asteroid that is about 1,650 feet (500 meters) wide, observing its size, shape, mass and composition and monitoring its orbital trajectory around the sun.</p>

<p>Using its robotic arm, the spacecraft also collected a sample from the surface of the asteroid that will help researchers determine the future trajectory of Bennu.</p>

<p>The rocks and dust collected by OSIRIS-REx are scheduled to return to Earth on September 24, 2023.</p>

<p>Bennu was discovered in 1999 and is classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid. It will make a close approach with Earth in September 2135. However, the chance of an impact is only&nbsp;1-in-2,700.</p>

<p>Scientists want to figure out how Earth's gravity and a phenomenon known as the Yarkovsky effect will affect its future trajectory and the potential for an impact on a subsequent orbit.</p>

<p>"The OSIRIS-REx data give us so much more precise information, we can test the limits of our models and calculate the future trajectory of Bennu to a very high degree of certainty through 2135," said Davide Farnocchia, a scientist with the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.</p>

<p>"We've never modeled an asteroid's trajectory to this precision before," said Farnocchia, lead author of a study published in the journal Icarus.</p>

<p>"The impact probability overall is very small," he stressed. "We shouldn't be worried about it too much."</p>

<p>Farnocchia said the risk from Bennu "is smaller than from the undiscovered population of objects of similar size."</p>

<p>Although the chances of it hitting Earth are very low, Bennu remains one of the two most hazardous known asteroids in our solar system, along with another asteroid called 1950 DA.</p>

<p>Researchers determined Bennu's total impact probability between now and the year 2300 at about one in 1,750, or 0.057 percent.</p>

<p>"We are still looking for what we don't know out there, the objects that haven't been found yet," said Lindley Johnson of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office.</p>

OSIRIS-REx, a NASA spacecraft, spent two years near Bennu, an asteroid that is about 1,650 feet (500 meters) wide, observing its size, shape, mass and composition and monitoring its orbital trajectory around the sun. Using its robotic arm, the spacecraft also collected a sample from the surface of the asteroid that will help researchers determine the future trajectory of Bennu. The rocks and dust collected by OSIRIS-REx are scheduled to return to Earth on September 24, 2023. Bennu was discovered in 1999 and is classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid. It will make a close approach with Earth in September 2135. However, the chance of an impact is only 1-in-2,700. Scientists want to figure out how Earth's gravity and a phenomenon known as the Yarkovsky effect will affect its future trajectory and the potential for an impact on a subsequent orbit. "The OSIRIS-REx data give us so much more precise information, we can test the limits of our models and calculate the future trajectory of Bennu to a very high degree of certainty through 2135," said Davide Farnocchia, a scientist with the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. "We've never modeled an asteroid's trajectory to this precision before," said Farnocchia, lead author of a study published in the journal Icarus. "The impact probability overall is very small," he stressed. "We shouldn't be worried about it too much." Farnocchia said the risk from Bennu "is smaller than from the undiscovered population of objects of similar size." Although the chances of it hitting Earth are very low, Bennu remains one of the two most hazardous known asteroids in our solar system, along with another asteroid called 1950 DA. Researchers determined Bennu's total impact probability between now and the year 2300 at about one in 1,750, or 0.057 percent. "We are still looking for what we don't know out there, the objects that haven't been found yet," said Lindley Johnson of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office. <p>The asteroid was about 26,200 km away from Earth — less than one-tenth the distance between the Earth and the moon, and quite close as far as asteroid approaches go. The average distance between the Earth and the moon is about 384,400 km.</p>

<p>Asteroid 2021 GW4 was discovered on April 8, 2021, using the 59 inches (1.5 metres) telescope of the Catalina Sky Survey at Mt. Lemmon, Arizona.</p>

<p>According to NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, more than 500 asteroids have been already identified this year.</p>

<p>The International Asteroid Discovery Project was conducted by STEM and Space, an organisation working towards the learning of astronomy and space science in India, along with the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) as part of a NASA citizen science project.</p>

<p>Over the last two years, 150 students from all around India participated in this two-month-long campaign to find asteroids, making this the largest asteroid discovery project in India, Mila Mitra, Co-founder and Academic Head of STEM and Space said.</p>

<p>In the project, the students from India, and across the globe analysed the high-quality astronomical data provided by IASC, an online scientific program for kids to discover Asteroids and Near-Earth Objects (NEO).</p>

<p>NEOs are rocky objects in an orbit between Mars and Jupiter, which pose a challenge to Earth as they may get perturbed out of their orbit and pose a threat of impact.<br />
According to Mitra and her team, NASA has initiated programs like IASC to track such asteroids regularly, also open to citizen scientists and students to enable the discovery and tracking of more asteroids.</p>

<p>She explained that in the project the students use advanced software analysis, "spending nearly two-three hours each day" to look for asteroids and report their findings.<br />
Of the 372 preliminary asteroids flagged by the students, 18 were finally declared to be "provisional" or confirmed discoveries of asteroids, Mitra noted.</p>

<p>"IAU confirmed these findings last month," the STEM and Space co-founder added.</p>

<p>Mitra believes brings such programs can bring the experiential learning of science, technology, engineering and medicine, or STEM, via the domain of space with a gamut of hands-on learning workshops.</p>

<p>However, she said more efforts need to be taken to extend the reach of such programs to government-run schools and those in rural parts of the country to make the citizen science projects more equitable.</p>

<p>Mitra noted that all the discoverers received Provisional Discovery Certificates from IASC and NASA for their scientific contribution in discovering asteroids.</p>
