French club Monaco upset 10-man Barcelona by grinding out a 2-1 victory on Thursday in the Champions League, while a stunning David Raya double-save ensured Arsenal a goalless draw away to Europa League winners Atalanta. Barca have started the season with a perfect record after five La Liga matches but, hindered by a red card in the 11th minute for Eric Garcia, fell to defeat on the French Riviera.

Maghnes Akliouche fired the French side into the lead five minutes after Garcia was dismissed for a last-man challenge on Takumi Minamino. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal equalised in the 28th minute with an arrowed shot after cutting in from the right onto his favoured left foot, but George Ilenikhena grabbed the winner for Monaco inside the final 20 minutes.

"After 10 minutes with the red card the game changed totally, but what I can see is really the positive thing," Barcelona coach Hansi Flick told reporters. "We tried to defend as a team and also attack as a team, and we had chances, but today they deserve the 2-1 (win), so we have to accept that."

In Italy, Arsenal goalkeeper Raya earned his side a point in a tough start to their campaign against Atalanta with a 0-0 draw. A tight match was lit up six minutes after the interval when Mateo Retegui saw Raya plunge down to his right to keep out his penalty, after a foul by Thomas Partey on Ederson.

The ball rebounded up in the air and Retegui looked set to casually nod the dropping ball into the gaping net but the Spaniard sprang to his feet and hurled himself back across the goal-line to claw the ball to safety.

"It's just a penalty and I was lucky to go the right way and save it," Raya told TNT Sports. "I was unlucky to give the rebound straight back to him but I was quick enough to get up and save it."

A 90th-minute header by Jose Maria Gimenez sent Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone scuttling down the touchline in delight as his side edged visitors RB Leipzig 2-1. Benjamin Sesko had put the German side in front just four minutes in, but Antoine Griezmann equalised just prior to the half-hour with a controlled finish from inside the penalty area.

The Frenchman then turned provider as he chipped a cross into the box, which Gimenez leapt highest to win at the back post and glance the ball back across Peter Gulacsi and into the Leipzig goal to spark wild celebrations in the Metropolitano Stadium.

"It's amazing, to get a last-minute goal like this is always fantastic and it's good to give the fans something to cheer about," Atletico's former Leipzig striker Alexander Sorloth told DAZN.

Bayer Leverkusen starlet Florian Wirtz enjoyed a dream Champions League debut as the Bundesliga champions thumped Dutch side Feyenoord 4-0 away from home. The 21-year-old scored a brace either side of an Alex Grimaldo strike before an own goal by Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther ensured Leverkusen had the points wrapped up by half-time.

"It may have looked pretty easy, but it's really not," Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso told reporters. "Overall it was a very serious, very efficient performance from us, but it's never easy."

French side Brest made a winning start in their first-ever appearance in European competition by seeing off Austria's Sturm Graz 2-1. Playing at Brittany rivals Guingamp's home ground as their own stadium does not meet UEFA standards, Brest took the lead midway through the first half through Hugo Magnetti.

An own-goal by Edimilson Fernandes on the stroke of half-time levelled matters but Abdallah Sima's smart finish in the 56th minute was enough to divide the sides. Benfica held on in Serbia against Red Star Belgrade to claim a 2-1 win courtesy of goals in the first half by Turkish duo Kerem Akturkoglu and Orkun Kokcu.

The second matchday of the Champions League league phase will take place on October 1 and 2 with Arsenal hosting Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich travelling to Aston Villa and reigning champions Real Madrid visiting Lille.

Arsenal players are unfazed by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland's goal-scoring rampage, midfielder Jorginho said vouching for the Gunners' confidence ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with City. City have had a perfect campaign in the league so far, while Arsenal secured three wins and a draw. Fresh off nine goals in four league games, including two hat-tricks, Haaland has scored 99 goals from 103 appearances for City across all competitions. The Norwegian aims for his century in Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan, while Arsenal begin their European campaign at Atalanta on Thursday and prepare to meet City at the Etihad on Sunday.

“Erling scoring again... it is starting to make us laugh,” the 32-year-old Italian said. “We look because we watch all the games and we love the Premier League." "We watch (City) as well, which is normal. It doesn’t get to our head. We need to focus on us and that is what we are trying to do."

Jorginho praised Arsenal’s mentality, saying it has improved since last season, pointing to their gritty 1-0 win over Tottenham HotSpur despite missing key players like captain Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Premier League 2024/25: Arsenal players not flustered by Erling Haaland's relentless form, says Jorginho

Mikel Arteta saluted Arsenal's hunger as the gritty Gunners ignored the absence of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard to clinch an "ugly" 1-0 win at bitter rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Arteta's side were without skipper Odegaard due to an ankle injury suffered on Norway duty, while fellow midfielder Rice served a suspension for his red card against Brighton. But the Premier League title contenders dug deep with a combative display, benefitting from Tottenham's latest display of wasteful finishing before Gabriel Magalhaes bagged the winner in the second half.

The Brazilian defender's first goal since February made it three wins from four league games for unbeaten Arsenal as they chase a first title since 2004 after two successive runners-up finishes.

"Super happy obviously. We know what it means for our club and our people to win a north London derby," Arteta said. "We had moments in the game where we had to suffer. We had to adapt a little bit because of some of the players we lost.

"I prepared for Tottenham for five days, then in one moment I lost one player and in another I lost another. I didn't sleep much!

"There were no excuses, no crying. The players have thick skin. They love the game. Sometimes to win you have to do the ugly things and they love to do that.

"I loved it, because day after day the players are hungrier and hungrier."

Arsenal have now won on their last three visits to Tottenham, losing just once, in May 2022, in their last eight meetings with their hated neighbours.

The second-placed Gunners are two points behind Manchester City as they turn their attention to their Champions League opener at Atalanta on Thursday before travelling to face Pep Guardiola's champions next weekend.

Arteta believes Arsenal's latest success behind enemy lines with stand them in good stead for a daunting week.

"We won three years in a row here. That is a big thing in the history of the club," he said. "It is a tough week coming up. The players believe already. We have a won a lot of big games, but this will give us a lot of energy and belief."

Mikel Arteta lauds Arsenal in ‘ugly’ win over rivals Spurs in Premier League

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta refused to rule captain Martin Odegaard out of Sunday's north London derby at Tottenham despite fears the key midfielder could be sidelined for weeks.

Odegaard suffered an ankle sprain on international duty with Norway earlier this week that looked set to also rule him out of tough away trips to Atalanta in the Champions League and a Premier League visit to Manchester City on September 22.

However, Arteta, who signed a new three-year deal on Thursday, said further tests were needed to discover the extent of the injury.

"We need some more tests," said the Spaniard at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

"Let’s see the extent of the injury and how quickly we can get him back. Martin wants to be here every day but we have to wait and see. I leave that to the doctor. He’s willing and he wants to be present in every game. We need to make sure we know first how good he is or not.

"Players with 48 hours are always available. Let’s see what happens."

Arsenal are already depleted in midfield for the north London derby due to Declan Rice's suspension for a harsh red card in a 1-1 draw with Brighton before the international break.

New signing Mikel Merino is also currently sidelined after breaking a bone in his shoulder.

However, Arteta could unleash another fresh face in Raheem Sterling, who joined in the final hours of the transfer window on loan from Chelsea.

The former England international had been outcast by Blues boss Enzo Maresca due to Chelsea's bloated squad.

Sterling previously worked with Arteta during their time together at Manchester City and the Gunners boss believes the winger is fired up to silence his critics.

"He looks great. First of all because he has a big smile on his face, a lot of energy. He's at it and he wants to prove a point," added Arteta. "When someone has got that in his belly you sense it straight away. Obviously, I don't need to discover anything about his quality and what he can bring to the team."

Gabriel Jesus has returned to training in a timely fitness boost for Arteta, but Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt after picking up a calf injury on international duty.

On Sunday, Arsenal are set to face arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for the first time this season. The new deal will come as an added incentive if Arsenal are able to beat their North London rivals on their own turf for the third consecutive season. They also won in January 2023 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and will be looking for another win on enemy territory on Sunday.

Arteta has so far enjoyed his stint as the Gunners' manager helping them win the FA Cup in 2020 while he has been instrumental in the club’s return as a big powerhouse in English and European football. The new deal also means the club will invest in his ideas with an aim to win the Premier League while attempting to go further in the Champions League.

Premier League: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta signs new three-year deal until 2027

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge hit its first stumbling block in a 1-1 draw with Brighton after Declan Rice was sent-off on Saturday, while Aston Villa won 2-1 away at Leicester.

Premier League: Arsenal play draw with Brighton after Declan Rice red card, Aston Villa beat Leicester

Chelsea reportedly agreed a deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United as Raheem Sterling is set to exit Stamford Bridge and join Arsenal on loan after a frenzied transfer deadline day for Premier League clubs. The clubs did not confirm the deals prior to the 2200 GMT deadline, but Sancho is expected join the Blues initially on loan with an obligation to make a permanent move next season for a reported £25 million ($33 million).

United have cut their losses on the 24-year-old, who has failed to live up to his price-tag ever since a £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. Sancho has not played a league game for United since posting on social media he had been made a "scapegoat" for poor performances just under a year ago.

But he shone during a loan spell back at Dortmund during the second half of last season, helping the German giants reach the Champions League final. Sancho's arrival adds to Chelsea's bloated squad, but one of those outcast by new boss Enzo Maresca has found a new home as Sterling moved across London to Arsenal.

The England international previously worked with Gunners' boss Mikel Arteta during their time at Manchester City. Sterling, who cost Chelsea £50 million from City just two years ago, was just one of a number of players urged to find a new club.

The 29-year-old gives Arsenal an extra attacking dimension in their bid to become champions for the first time since 2004.

Chelsea's attempts to agree a deal for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen fell through. Saudi club Al-Ahli had also been interested in the Nigerian but instead signed England international striker Ivan Toney.

Brentford have reportedly received a £40 million fee for Toney. "We thank him for so many magic moments and wish him all the best for his next chapter. Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend," said Bees manager Thomas Frank.

- Man Utd sign Ugarte -

United completed a 50 million euro (£42 million) move for Uruguayan international midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain. "Together we will fight to win trophies and reach the level where this club needs to be," said the 23-year-old.

Ugarte becomes the Red Devils' fifth major signing of the window after Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee. But Erik ten Hag said he was sad to see Scott McTominay go after the Scottish international joined Napoli.

Arsenal added goalkeeper Neto as cover for David Raya on a season-long loan from Bournemouth, after letting Aaron Ramsdale leave for Southampton in a £25 million move.

Manchester City, though, refused to delve into the market on deadline day even if Pep Guardiola admitted he is taking a risk in not replacing Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, who departed for Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

"Maybe it is a mistake, I don't know but I don't like leaving players without playing for a long time," said Guardiola on his preference for a smaller squad.

- Newcastle frustrated -

Crystal Palace were among the busiest sides on Friday despite rebuffing interest in captain Marc Guehi from Newcastle. The Eagles signed striker Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £30 million, French defender Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg and a loan deal for Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah.

Wolves bolstered their squad with the signings of Brazilian midfielder Andre from Fluminense for £21 million and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. Nottingham Forest brought in West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse on loan and Brazilian defender Morato from Benfica.

Newcastle have the financial backing of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, but have been frustrated in their attempts to quickly challenge at the top of the Premier League by the need to meet financial sustainability rules.

The Magpies were unable to add any major signings during this window. "I don't think the dream dies, necessarily, but I think it takes a lot longer," said Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on his club's bold ambitions of becoming English champions within a decade of the Saudi takeover in 2021.

Premier League: Arsenal complete signing of Spain's Mikel Merino

Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick to fire Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday and lift the champions to the top of the Premier League table.

They lead on goal difference from Brighton & Hove Albion, who defeated Manchester United 2-1 with a last-gasp goal, and Arsenal who struck twice late on to earn a gritty 2-0 win at Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur handed last-placed Everton more misery with a 4-0 victory and West Ham earned their first win of the season, 2-0 over Crystal Palace.

Manchester City scored three times in less than four minutes after conceding a shock early goal to crush Ipswich and remain perfect in their quest for a fifth consecutive league title.

Haaland kicked off City's trio of goals in 191 seconds with a penalty in the 12th minute. Kevin De Bruyne netted less than two minutes later and Haaland struck again to all but seal the victory at Etihad Stadium.

"Last season (Haaland) struggled a lot, especially at the beginning," City manager Pep Guardiola said. "He felt tired and niggles most of the time. This time with the rest with no Euros, he has arrived with a good vibe. The numbers are unbelievable."

Late Winner

Brighton earned a dramatic home victory over United at the Amex when Joao Pedro scored in the fifth minute of added time.

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck scored the opener against his former club before Amad Diallo drew Erik ten Hag's men and the game looked destined for a draw.

Brighton's pressure paid off, however, when Simon Adingra chipped the ball over United's defenders for an unmarked Pedro who headed home.

"It was very emotional, always when you get the win in the last minute, it is," Brighton manager Fabian Huerzeler said. "I think we deserved to win, we had a good game not a perfect game."

Goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey secured Arsenal's win at Villa.

The victory was a measure of revenge after Villa beat the Gunners twice last season, losses that ultimately ended Arsenal's chances of winning the title.

Ollie Watkins missed two gilt-edged chances before substitute Trossard scored in the 67th minute with his first touch and Partey doubled the lead.

"A strong start is always good, especially for the feeling, how you go into a new season," Trossard said. "It's so early on so it's hard to predict what it's going to be at the end of the season, but it's definitely what we're aiming for, is to win games."

Keeper Jordan Pickford's error and Son Heung-min's brace helped Spurs to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over struggling Everton.

Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero also scored as Tottenham eased to their first win of the campaign against a visiting side who have conceded seven times in two games.

"The performance was good," Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said. "It's really encouraging for us."

Second-half goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen fired West Ham to victory at Selhurst Park.

The visitors broke the deadlock when Palace struggled to clear the ball and Soucek steered the ball home.

Hammers captain Bowen added the second, latching on to a brilliant pass by Max Kilman before lashing a left-footed shot into the net.

There were more heroics from the goalscorers when West Ham's fans charged down to celebrate Soucek's goal, causing an advertising hoarding to collapse, trapping a ball boy.

Soucek held the hoarding so the child could wriggle out, with Bowen pulling the boy through his teammate's legs to safety.

"I just managed to grab him out as quick as possible, it was just instinct, just to do it," Bowen said.

Leicester City were beaten 2-1 by Fulham and early struggles continued for fellow league newcomers Southampton who lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

PL 2024/25: Manchester City on top after Haaland’s hat-trick against Ipswich Town; Arsenal win at Villa

Arsenal made a flying start to their bid to win the Premier League title as goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka sealed a 2-0 victory against Wolves on Saturday.

Germany forward Havertz put Mikel Arteta's side ahead in the first half at the Emirates Stadium and England winger Saka wrapped up the points after the interval.

It was exactly the kind of statement Arsenal needed after Arteta admitted they will have to be almost perfect to end Manchester City's four-year reign as champions.

Arsenal enjoyed a record-breaking 2023/24 campaign, winning more games than ever before in the division, but were still pipped to the title.

City finished two points above Arsenal as the Gunners were forced to settle for a runners-up berth for a second successive season.

Arsenal haven't won the title since Arsene Wenger's 'Invincibles' went unbeaten through the 2003-04 league campaign.

But the painful near-misses endured by Arteta's men have not dulled their appetite for success, with Arteta's quirky man-management fuelling the fire.

Arteta hired a group of professional pickpockets to teach his squad a valuable lesson in the close-season.

Unaware of the pickpockets' presence at a team dinner, Arsenal's players were relieved of their valuables as Arteta took the opportunity to remind them to be alert at all times, on and off the pitch.

Stealing the Premier League title from City won't be so easy for Arteta.

Arteta has so far opted against signing the striker that many regard as the missing piece in Arsenal's title jigsaw.

Riccardo Calafiori was Arteta's major close-season signing from Bologna, but the Italy defender was only named on the bench.

Arteta has been linked with Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino but despite the call for new recruits, there was scant evidence of any Arsenal flaws in the north London sunshine.

Thunderous strike

The Gunners were quickly on the front foot as Ben White's deflected effort was saved by Jose Sa.

Saka forced Sa into a fine stop moments later as the Wolves keeper sprawled to keep out a low drive.

Arsenal had all the momentum against a Wolves side with little creative ambition and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 25th minute.

As he was so often last season, Saka was the catalyst with a pin-point cross that picked out Havertz, who applied the finishing touch with a clinical header.

After showing little attacking ambition, Wolves were woken from their slumber by Havertz's opener.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde's fierce long-range strike flashed just over before Jorgen Strand Larsen's header drew an agile save from David Raya.

Arsenal still finished the half in the ascendency as Declan Rice's flick reached Gabriel Martinelli and his curler deflected narrowly over.

On top again after the interval, Arteta's side went close through Havertz's chip before Thomas Partey drilled just wide.

Arsenal briefly lost their composure as Rayan Ait-Nouri's 25-yard strike whistled past the post.

Matheus Cunha shot straight at Raya after Arsenal gave the ball away at the back.

But the Gunners finished strongly and Martin Odegaard's effort was pushed out by Sa before Saka struck in the 74th minute.

A flowing move climaxed with Saka lashing a thunderous strike past Sa as Arsenal underlined their desire to wrestle the title away from City.

ALSO READ | Premier League: Liverpool manager Arne Slot off to winning start at Ipswich Thunderous strike The Gunners were quickly on the front foot as Ben White's deflected effort was saved by Jose Sa. Former Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed what went down between him and manager Mikel Arteta that led to his ouster from the London-based club.

Former Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed what went down between him and manager Mikel Arteta that led to his ouster from the London-based club. Aubameyang was offloaded to Barcelona in January 2022 after having a falling out with Arteta over what club described at the time as 'disciplinary issues'. Aubameyang was the club captain when he led Arsenal to FA Cup glory in 2020. However, by early 2021, he was dropped out of the squad after missing crucial matches, including the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. The breakdown in relationship When Aubameyang's mother fell ill and the Gabon striker was forced to tend to her, the relationship between him and the club took a nosedive. After initially taking permission to go to his mother, Aubameyang had to stay back due to additional examinations that her mother had to undergo. Upon returning to London, Arteta went ballistic on him, in front of the entire team. “I arrive, the coach finishes his meeting and then he grabs me and he completely tears into me, he shouts at me like I'm crazy, he says: 'You put a knife in my back. You can't do that to me given the times we're going through'. At that moment I tell myself that I'm not going to answer him because it's going to end angrily," Aubameyang told Colinterview. Also read | El Clasico: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scores twice as Barcelona hammer Real Madrid 4-0 in La Liga "I didn't go partying. He knows very well the reason for my departure, so at that moment, I don't understand why he is lecturing me like this. I go home and the doctor calls me and says, 'Tomorrow, the coach doesn't want you to be there.' I said 'OK', I knew the next match was coming and I said to myself, 'Damn once again everyone is going to talk about it, it's going to be a mess, what is this crazy thing?' I couldn't understand it," he added. After the striker was stripped off his captaincy, Norway's Martin Odegaard was handed the responsibility as Arteta sought to impose himself on the club. Aubameyang was brought to Arsenal by former manager Arsene Wenger in 2018 for a then-club-record fee. His FA Cup win with Arsenal remains the last major trophy the club have won since, despite making major improvements in the squad. (With inputs from agencies)

Premier League: Manchester City beat West Ham to become first team to win four straight titles

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has asked the team to not be satisfied with the second-placed finish in the Premier League season on Sunday (May 19). Arsenal was beaten by two points at the hand of Manchester City who went on to win their record fourth consecutive PL title - a first in the league history.

Arsenal, who beat Everton to finish with 89 points, needed City to lose to West Ham but the eventual champions won their game 3-1 and finished the league at 91 - two points ahead of Arsenal. Arsenal's 89 points are third highest in the league history to finish without the title.

"Now it is time to have a break, think, reflect, and please keep pushing. Keep inspiring this team. Don't be satisfied because we want much more than that and we are going to get it," Arteta said after the game against Everton.

"If we do what we have to do, we're going to be closer and at the end we'll win it. When, I don't know. But if we keep knocking and being that close, in the end it will happen," he added.

"No one has to explain what the level is because I was there four years every day and I know what we have to do if we are going to reach there. Arsenal, who beat Everton to finish with 89 points, needed City to lose to West Ham but the eventual champions won their game 3-1 and finished the league at 91 - two points ahead of Arsenal. Arsenal's 89 points are third highest in the league history to finish without the title. 'I don't know,' says coach Mikel Arteta on 'WHEN' Arsenal will win Premier League title

Manchester City midfielder has taken a dig at Arsenal's 'mentality' after the Gunners lost the Premier League (PL) title by two points on Sunday (May 19). City won their fourth consecutive PL trophy with a 3-1 win over West Ham United while Arsenal had to contend with a second-place finish after a hard-fought 2-1 win against Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

City won their fourth consecutive PL trophy with a 3-1 win over West Ham United while Arsenal had to contend with a second-place finish after a hard-fought 2-1 win against Everton at the Emirates Stadium. Speaking after the match, Rodri pointed out that when Arsenal came knocking at Etihad, they played for a draw, which eventually cost them the title. "To be honest, I think it's in here [points at his brain]. It's the mentality. [There are] great players all over the league, all over the clubs. Arsenal also deserve [to win], they did an unbelievable season, but I think the difference was in here [points to his head again]," said Rodri. "When they came here, they faced us at the Etihad, I saw them and said: 'Ah, these guys, they don't want to beat us, they just want a draw.' And that mentality, I don't think we would do it the same way," he added. However, the Gunners played an ultra-defensive game by setting up a low block. While the decision was pragmatic, it certainly didn't age well as City went on another marauding, unbeaten run. "And we caught them. In the end, if you give us one point, we will win the last seven, or eight games even though it's so tough. So I think [the title win] comes down to mentality," said Rodri. It was Man City's sixth title in the last seven years, showcasing the domination Pep Guardiola had conjured up during his time in England. The Spanish manager won a historic treble last year and would now be hoping to do the domestic double by winning the FA Cup final against cross-city rivals, Manchester United, on May 25. While Guardiola has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest managers to ever grace the sport, the legitimacy of his titles has been shrouded in controversy with the 115 charges looming large over the club. A court hearing is scheduled for later this year with the verdict expected to come out next year. (With inputs from agencies)

Pep Guardiola urged history-chasing Manchester City to seize their title "destiny" as the battle for Premier League supremacy reaches a thrilling climax on Sunday.

Guardiola's all-conquering team go into the final day of the season with a two-point lead over second-placed Arsenal thanks to an eight-game winning streak.

Arsenal have been near flawless themselves in 2024, with 15 wins and one draw, away to City, in 17 league matches.

Arsenal, who finished second last year, must beat Everton at the Emirates Stadium and hope City fail to win if they are to end their 20-year wait for the title.

Premier League: Manchester City's second-choice goalkeeper produces title-winning save to deny Son - WATCH

Erling Haaland scored twice to settle Manchester City's nerves as the Premier League champions beat Tottenham 2-0 to take a giant step towards a historic fourth straight English title on Tuesday.

The Norwegian forward tapped home a pinpoint Kevin De Bruyne cross early in the second half to score City's first-ever league goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And he netted a late penalty to seal the three points for the visitors, minutes after substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega saved brilliantly from Son Heung-min.

The win takes Pep Guardiola's team two points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table after 37 games.

Victory at the Etihad against West Ham on Sunday will make them champions for a fourth consecutive season, regardless of the Gunners' result against Everton.

No team in English top-flight history has ever won four titles in a row.

Defeat for Spurs also guarantees that Aston Villa will finish in the fourth Champions League spot, joining City, Arsenal and Liverpool in Europe's top-tier competition next season.

"We gave the chance in our hands for the last game," Guardiola told the BBC. "The tennis players say 'The serve to win Wimbledon, the last game, is the most difficult one'.

"It happened in our period against Aston Villa (in 2022). And many, many years ago it happened with Sergio Aguero (scoring) in 93 minutes 20 seconds against QPR. So there will be the typical game."

Guardiola called for help from City's fans to get them over the line.

"We know what we're playing for," he said. "The tension is there, the rival is so good. It's why it is difficult, we know that.

"Everyone come to the stadium and make noise. These games are more difficult but you have to do it. We'll have one day off, two days to prepare, and then we will do our best."

The build-up to the game in north London was dominated by a fierce debate over whether home fans wanted their own team to lose in order to leave City in the driving seat, with Arsenal their nearest challengers.

The Spurs supporters made their feelings towards their bitter local rivals clear in the opening minutes, with chants of "Stand up if you hate Arsenal" ringing around the stadium.

City, who came into the match unbeaten in 21 league matches, were short of their fluent best while Spurs struggled to put the finishing touches to their attacking moves.

Moments after the re-start Vicario dived full length to keep out a stinging De Bruyne effort.

But the visitors broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Bernardo Silva found De Bruyne in the box and the Belgian crossed for Haaland to slot home from point-blank range.

Thousands of Spurs fans chanted "Are you watching Arsenal" as the City faithful celebrated in their corner.

The game then became disjointed as De Bruyne was raked down the Achilles by Pape Sarr before Ederson took a blow to the head in denying Cristian Romero and was replaced shortly afterwards by Ortega.

The German was called into action immediately, denying substitute Dejan Kulusevski from close range.

Time stood still when Son burst through with five minutes of normal time remaining but Ortega saved with his legs when the South Korean seemed certain to score.

Guardiola fell to the ground, clutching his head in disbelief.

Instead City were awarded a penalty when Pedro Porro brought down substitute Jeremy Doku and Haaland smashed home in the 91st minute to spark wild celebrations from the players in front of the City faithful, taking his league tally to 27 goals for the season.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has clapped back at those attempting to undermine his team's success. Guardiola is chasing a historic fourth consecutive Premier League title - a feat that has never been achieved in English football. Speaking ahead of the potential title-decider against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday (May 14), Guardiola said if success came only from money spent, the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea will be in their position. “Before it was the money. For that reason, Manchester United should have won all the titles, Chelsea - all the titles, Arsenal - all the titles. They spend as much money in the last five years as us. They should be there. They are not there," said Guardiola at the pre-match press conference. “For that reason Girona shouldn’t be in the Champions League [next season] and Leicester should win the Premier League," he added. Also read | ‘Won’t roll out red carpet’: Ange Postecoglou on facing Man City despite Spurs win helping rivals Arsenal Man City's 115 breaches While Guardiola has reached new milestones with the City team, his success has come with a little asterisk next to it. The Manchester-based club is facing 115 charges related to breach of Premier League regulations. The club is accused of providing inaccurate financial information between 2009 to 2018. It also failed to provide accurate details for player and manager payments from 2009 to 2018. Additionally, it failed to comply with UEFA's ruling, including Financial Fair Play (FFP) between 2013-14 and 2017-18. Between 2015 to 2018, the club has been charged with seven breaches of Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). While the likes of Everton and Nottingham Forest have been punished this season for breaching PSR, City are yet to face any action. 'It is hard' While the legal cases remain pending against City, the team sits at the cusp of history. Guardiola admitted that his players knew what they were playing for, having reached so close to the ultimate prize. “In the beginning of the season we didn’t think about it. But then we were in February, March and April, we were still there. After that it ignites something in all our heads," said the Spanish manager. Guardiola cited examples of previous dynasties in the Premier League and Division One that failed to four-peat the title. “No team has done it. That shows how hard it is. Liverpool in the '80s, Sir Alex Ferguson’s United in the '90s. Chelsea with [Roman] Abramovich and Jose [Mourinho], Arsenal with [Arsene] Wenger didn’t do it.” A win against Spurs would propel City to the top of the points table, heading into the final matchday on Sunday (May 19). However, a loss or a draw would hand the advantage to Arsenal who are chasing their first title in nearly two decades. (With inputs from agencies)

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola claps back on ‘money’ buying titles allegations

Arsenal kept their Premier League title dreams alive by ending an Old Trafford hoodoo to grind out a 1-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday to move back top of the table.

Leandro Trossard scored the only goal in the 20th minute as Arsenal won for just the second time in 17 games away at United to go a point clear at the summit.

Manchester City still have the chance of holding the title in their own hands as the defending champions have two matches left to Arsenal's one.

However, the Gunners kept the pressure on Pep Guardiola's men ahead of their tricky trip to Tottenham on Tuesday.

Defeat further dented United's chances of competing in Europe next season.

Erik ten Hag's men showed more spirit than in a dismal 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday (May 6), but have now won just one of their last eight Premier League games.

A scintillating 2024 for Gunners

Arsenal have been in scintillating form in 2024 to remain in the race for their first league title in 20 years.

Mikel Arteta's men have won 15 and drawn one of their 17 league games since the turn of the year.

But Arsenal were far from their flowing best as the expected onslaught of an injury-ravaged United never materialised under unusually stifling heat in England's north-west.

The manner of defeat at Palace had increased the scrutiny on United boss Ten Hag.

He made three changes to the team swept aside at Selhurst Park as Scott McTominay, Sofyan Amrabat and Amad Diallo came in.

The Dutchman's options were again hamstrung by a lengthy list of absentees with captain Bruno Fernandes among those sidelined and a bench littered with youngsters.

But his decision to retain Casemiro as a makeshift centre-back after his woeful showing against Palace will become another stick to beat the beleaguered coach with.

The Brazil captain was dropped from their squad for the Copa America in midweek due to his terrible form.

After United had managed to keep the free-scoring visitors at bay for the opening 20 minutes, Casemiro was culpable for the opening goal.

The 32-year-old was laboured in pushing up from a United goal-kick to play Kai Havertz onside and Trossard then stole in on the blind side of Casemiro to tap in the German's cross.

United's new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance at Old Trafford rather than at Wembley to see the club's women pick up their first ever major trophy in the FA Cup final.

The work that lies ahead of Ratcliffe has been laid bare in recent weeks, but the home side did manage to keep the majority of the 74,000 crowd onside by taking the game to Arsenal after the break.

Arsenal, though, were rarely seriously troubled as they held out for a sixth clean sheet in their last seven away league games.

Alejandro Garnacho was United's one live wire but smashed into the side-netting with his best chance to equalise.

Gabriel Martinelli and Declan Rice were denied by brilliant Andre Onana saves to prevent Arsenal the second goal they craved to avoid a tense finale.

The visitors' desperation to see the game out was evident as Martinelli took the ball to the corner with 10 minutes of the 90 still to play.

But Arsenal did just enough to ask the question City, who host West Ham on the final day of the season after their visit to north London in midweek.

United remain eighth in the table, three points adrift of both Newcastle, who they face on Wednesday, and Chelsea. Also read | MAJOR security breach! Arsenal overcome Manchester United challenge to go top of Premier League table

Manchester City could take yet another giant step towards the Premier League title over the weekend as they face Fulham. The defending champions will look to become the first team in the history of English football to be crowned champions for four consecutive seasons. But Arsenal sitting top of the Premier League standings and with a tight margin for error, when could Man City be crowned the champions of England at the earliest?

When could City become champions?

As things stand, City can win the Premier League title with three wins in the three remaining matches of the season, which would therefore see them become champions on the final day of the season. However, they could be champions as early as Tuesday (May 14) evening if results go their way. Currently on 82 points, City could attain 88 points by Tuesday evening if they beat both Fulham and Spurs in their next two matches.

A defeat for Arsenal against Manchester United at Old Trafford could see them reach only a maximum of 86 points before the final weekend. Therefore, City will be crowned champions on Tuesday if they win both their next two matches and Arsenal lose at Old Trafford.

Even a draw for Arsenal against United will see City crowned champions on Tuesday if they beat Ange Postecoglou’s side.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side won’t be crowned champions on the weekend in any set of results.

What happens if both City, Arsenal end with the same points?

In case both Man City and Arsenal end with the same points, then the Premier League title will be decided on goal difference (GD). As things stand, Arsenal have a superior goal difference of +60 while Man City have +54. Much will depend on how many goals City and Arsenal score to win their matches in the remainder of the season. Interestingly, Man City remain the only team in the history of the Premier League to win the title on GD having done so in the 2011-12 season when they finished level with Man United on 89 points each.

When could Man City win Premier League title at earliest? Here are all details

With little over a week to go before the Premier League season’s conclusion, Arsenal will be optimistic to win the title and end their two-decade wait to lift the English football’s holy grail. Arsenal with two matches to go are on the brink of lifting the title but that won’t happen without a helping hand. Sitting top of the Premier League standings at the time of writing, Arsenal have 83 points from 36 matches while Manchester City in second place have 82 points from 35 matches.

What needs to happen for Arsenal to win the Premier League?

The odds remain against the Gunners winning the Premier League title as Manchester City hold their fate in their own hands. Three wins in three matches for Pep Guardiola’s men will see them get crowned champions, having no bearing on what Arsenal do in their remaining two matches. Considering the best scenario for Mikel Arteta’s men, they need to win both their matches and hope Man City don’t surpass their points tally.

This would mean Arsenal finish on 89 points while Man City need to finish on 88 points or fewer. For City to finish with that point, they should lose at least one match or draw two matches in their remaining three matches.

Man City’s three matches remaining include Fulham (Saturday), Spurs (Tuesday) and West Ham United (May 18). Arsenal could be given a big helping hand by arch-rivals Spurs if they beat Man City on Tuesday, but having lost four consecutive matches the result is highly unlikely.

Arsenal take on Man City’s arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford in a high-voltage clash. In case Arsenal draw the match, it will be big dents for their Premier League title challenge as they will only reach a maximum of 87 points, meaning City would need only five points to win from their remaining three matches. How can Arsenal win the Premier League title? Here are details

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could miss the all-important final Premier League match of the season against Everton later this month. With a title on the line, Arteta is walking a tightrope and any disciplinary action against him could lead to a touchline ban, which may have a negative effect on the team's morale.

Heading into the penultimate match against Manchester United, Arteta has received five yellow cards - the most a manager has accumulated this season. Another yellow card against the Red Devils on the Old Trafford turf would mean a one-game suspension for the Spanish manager.

With the tempers expected to flare, as they usually do in fixtures of such magnitude, it would augur best for Arteta and Arsenal that he keeps a calm demeanour. A suspension would result in Arteta's team playing in front of relegation battlers, Everton, without his guidance.

Everton halt title challengers

The Toffees, under manager Sean Dyche, have already shown that they are capable of halting title charges. Cross-city rivals Liverpool found it the hard way last month when the title challengers succumbed to a 0-2 defeat and fell behind in the race against Arsenal and Manchester City.

The Arsenal gaffer has already faced suspension once thus season after receiving three yellow cards following a booking against Luton Town. He was forced to miss the Gunners' trip to Aston Villa in December and his side were beaten 1-0, showing the significant impact his absence had on the team. December was the month where Arsenal lost steam in the title race before roaring back to form.

Arsenal are currently leading the Premier League points table, having collected 83 points in 36 matches played. Manchester City are on second spot with 82 points but have a game in hand and could potentially leapfrog Arsenal after the match against Fulham on Saturday (May 11).

The calculation is simple for Arsenal to win its first Premier League title in nearly two decades. The London-based team needs to win all its matches and hope that City drop a point or lose one of their matches. As for Liverpool, a lot hinges on both Arsenal and City imploding at the final hurdle which looks highly unlikely at this stage.
