Fears over France's new €350 million anti-drone system failing to distinguish between unmanned terrorist aircraft and air conditioners have surfaced, raising concerns for the 500,000 spectators scheduled for the Paris Olympics.

According to The Times, the Parade system, which is hailed as critical to the fight against terror at the Games, was not as perfect as it seemed during a recent round of testing.

Reportedly, it can identify one out of every three drones in densely populated urban areas, but only up to 800 metres away. The system also misidentified air conditioning unit propellers as drones, a person familiar with the test told The Times.

A representative for Thales, which created Parade, said the technology, which is based on 'advanced processing algorithms', 'demonstrated its relevance' during the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

"Given the stakes involved, it is normal that the development of these algorithms and the fine-tuning of these sensors is requiring some effort and time, but the most important thing is to be ready for the Olympic Games 2024 with a system that armed forces operators have fully adopted," they added.

With the opening ceremony less than three months away, France has had to boost its much-vaunted 'Parade' kit with systems that reportedly involve people and technology from the Royal Air Force. The Parade system received a €350 million tender from the French defence procurement agency to create an anti-drone system in 2022.

Paris Olympics defence system blunders: Air conditioner mistaken for drones

The anti-terror operation in South Kashmir’s Kokernag area continued for the sixth consecutive day on Monday (Sept 18).

A top police officer said that one dead body was recovered from the operation site believed to be of the terrorist, whose identity is being ascertained.

Police suspect that the deceased is a terrorist based on the clothing patterns and other evidence. A DNA test is currently underway.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the house of Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Bhat who was killed in the operation, along with two Indian Army officers.

Speaking on the Kokernag anti-terrorist operation, he said, “Every drop of blood of our soldiers and innocent civilians will be avenged.”

''We have full faith in the bravery and courage of our army, police and Central Armed Police Forces. Our brave security personnel from J&amp;K Police and the Army laid down their lives recently while fighting terrorism. Terrorists and their sympathizers will have to pay a very heavy price,'' Sinha said.

The Kokernag operation is turning out to be the longest anti-terrorist operation being conducted in Kashmir Valley in years. The Army and police have been using all necessary modern, next-gen equipment during this operation.

A joint command centre was established near the Gadole forest to monitor the whole operation and top Army Commanders including GOC Northern Command Lt General Upendra Dwivedi and DGP J&amp;K Police Dilbagh Singh visited the operational area.

The Kokernag operation, which is being jointly carried out by elite commands and soldiers of the Rashtriya Rifles regiment, is the most high-tech operation in recent times.

They have been using quadcopters, drones, and hexacopters, a drone with the ability to attack and fix the target, and can&nbsp;map a 10-kilometre radius of digital videography.

Besides para commandos, mountain warriors (mountaineers of high altitude warfare school ( HAWS ) and Special Operation Group of Jammu Kashmir forces ( SOG) have also been deployed.

As many as 5 terrorists were neutralised in 48 hours during anti-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Sunday, a terrorist belonging to the Islamic State Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) outfit, who was involved in the killing of a police officer, was killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag, police said.

Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar identified the slain terrorist as Faheem Bhat, resident of Kadipora Anantnag.

“He has recently joined terror outfit ISJK and was involved in the killing of Martyr ASI Mohd Ashraf, who was posted at PS Bijbehara,” the IGP Kashmir said in a tweet.

The search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding terrorists fired on the forces, who retaliated, he said.

ASI Ashraf was shot dead by terrorists outside Bijbehara hospital on Wednesday evening.

In another encounter that broke out at Hardumir in the Tral area of Pulwama, two militants were killed, the official said. Both were affiliated with proscribed terror outfit AuGH.

The United States on Friday reiterated that Pakistan should continue taking sustained and verifiable action against terrorist groups operating on its soil to prevent future attacks and promote regional stability in the region in line with its international obligations. 
 
This comes after the U.N. Security Council (UNSC) had approved a request by Pakistan to allow global terrorist Hafiz Saeed to access his bank accounts for 'basic expenses' to help his family. 
 
"Basic exemption requests for U.N.-designated individuals are consistent with every member state's responsibilities regarding the disposition of funds to U.N.-designated individuals residing in their territory," a State Department spokesperson told ANI. 
 
"We continue to encourage all member states to fully abide by and implement their obligations under UN sanctions regimes. This includes submitting basic exemption requests for UN-designated individuals and entities, as needed," the spokesperson said. 
 
However, the spokesperson outlined that all member states are encouraged to take appropriate action to arrest and prosecute terrorists. 
"In line with its international obligations, Pakistan must continue to take sustained and verifiable action against terrorist groups to prevent future attacks and promote regional stability," the spokesperson remarked. 
 
In a letter dated August 15, the U.N. Sanctions Committee said it had received a letter from Pakistan seeking permission to allow Saeed "certain expenditure" from his frozen bank account. The Chair said that the request was approved after "no objection" had been received from any member. 
 
"The chair has the honour to refer to his draft letter to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan communicating the committee's decision with respect to the intention of the Pakistani authorities to authorise certain expenditures to the benefit of Hafiz Muhammad Saeed (QDi.236), Haji Muhammad Ashraf (QDI.265) and Zafar Iqbal (QDI.308) to cover basic expenses, as specified in the note verbale of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan pursuant to paragraph 81 (a) of resolution 2368 (2017)," the letter read. 
 
"The chair wishes to inform the members that no objections were placed by the set dateline of 15 August 2019 at 3:00 p.m. for the consideration of the draft letter. Consequently, the letter is approved, and the chair will instruct the Secretariat to dispatch it," it said. 
 
Pakistan, which has time and again proven to be a safe haven for global terrorists, has based its request by outlining the monthly expenses requirement of Jammat-ud-Dawah (JuD) chief Saeed, who it claims, has to support a family of four. 
 
Being a proscribed terrorist, Saeed is subjected to comprehensive economic and trade sanctions such as arms embargoes, travel bans, and financial or commodity restrictions. 
 
Saeed, who has been designated as global terrorists by the United States, the United Nations, and the European Union, was the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that claimed 166 lives.&nbsp;

A suspected Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agent in Maharashtra's Nagpur has been arrested by Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror squad on Monday for allegedly spying and leaking technical information from BrahMos Aerospace missile unit.
