Brendan McCullum and Ben Stokes have said that we're going to ask for something livelier, spicier at the Lord's. Do you think it was the right decision for them to go for the flat decks in the first two tests?</strong></p><p>We are not used to seeing England this warm when we go there in June or early part of July. It's a bit nippy, which England is supposed to be, but it's not cold. So, obviously, because the conditions are a lot drier, it is affecting everything including the pitches. Also, I wouldn't say that it was a flat track (at Edgbaston). No, there will always be movement (in the UK). There will always be assistance for spinners or for seam bowlers because those are the conditions. And even if they give a green track, it's okay. Both teams will have to bat on it. It's not that only one team will bat on it. And both teams will get to bowl on it. I don't think conditions will really matter. First couple of hours, first morning of the Test match, any match that starts, the first morning will be essential anywhere in the world.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Prasidh Krishna has bowled well in the first two Tests. But he hasn't been able to take many wickets despite being IPL's highest wicket taker in the season leading to the series. What do you think, what part is not going right for him as far as the wicket column is concerned?</strong></p><p>I think it's a little unfair probably to say that something is going wrong. Every bowler has a rhythm and we saw that the rhythm that he was bowling in IPL was top notch. That's why he was one of the top wicket takers. When you immediately shift to Test match cricket and you have been out of action as he came into this IPL after a bit of an injury. So, look at the last 18 months of the time that he has been playing - from there to shift from T20 to Test match cricket can take a bit of time. He improved as the game progressed in the first test match. Yes, he was back of the length of short but he improved. In the second test match, he was a lot better. It's about finding that rhythm and for any bowler it will hold true including for Akash Deep, Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, everyone to find that right rhythm. Some find it early, some take a little bit of time. So, He has improved from the first to the second Test match and he is a quality bowler, so I am sure that things will turn around.</p><p><br><strong>Do you think that India should go with two spinners at Lord's?</strong></p><p>It is difficult to say. We have not seen the conditions. We don't know what the pitch is going to be like. What the weather forecast is going to be like for the few days ahead. We don't know. If you play with two genuine spinners and the kind of batting that we have, I don't think you can squeeze in two genuine spinners at Lord's. So, it will be difficult. I thought that he (Kuldeep) would play here at Edgbaston. But since they didn't pick him, it will be difficult to play him at Lord's. That's what I feel. But we have not seen the conditions. Let's see what the conditions are like at Lord's and then only I am sure the team management will decide who to play.</p><p><br><strong>Karun Nair has gotten starts but hasn't been able to convert them. Do you think that he needs to adjust a bit more technically?</strong></p><p>I'll put it simply - Karun Nair has played very well in both the Test matches. He has gotten out to very good deliveries from the bowlers and that can happen. I know he scored 25-30 runs, but those 30-35 runs that he scored, not a single time that he looked uncomfortable. From the middle of the bat, every shot. Also, all these batters are very experienced players and they know how to make that adjustment and what to do.</p>

<p>India men's team is currently in Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) and the women's team now has arrived Down Under for a three-match ODI series which begins on Thursday (Dec 5) in Brisbane.</p>

<p>India are coming off a 2-1&nbsp;victory against New Zealand in a home ODI series but the tournament-ending loss against Aussie women in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in October would still be fresh in their minds.</p>

<p>In a conversation with WION, former India women skipper Anjum Chopra talked about India players to look out for in the series among others. Here's the interview:</p>

<p><strong>The first question would be that Shafali Verma dropped from the squad. How do you see this move?</strong></p>

<p>It's a selector's call. And if they feel that the decision of giving a break to Shefali is essential, then it's fine. It's not that she's been arrested or not picked for this at the back of some breathtaking performances or match-winning performances. It hasn't been like that. And there are quite a few contenders for the opener slot in the women's set up at this point of time. So I think it's about giving others an opportunity as well. So Shefali is a very talented cricketer, and I'm sure she's going to work hard and come back.</p>

<p><strong>Where do you think that India women team&nbsp;lags than the Australian team per se? They have ability, they have talent, and they have been performing, but during clutch moments, they seem to have fallen short more often than not.</strong></p>

<p>It's a contest. Okay, so in Australia, we all know across sports, they are a very strong competitive unit, and they tend to have more victories than many other nations across the globe. So for us, we are a very work in progress team. We are a good side. But for us to become a world beating side, obviously the talent has to be now superseded by a performance and a regular performance. So we are very close to breaking those shackles and breaking those barriers. But as I say, it's a work in progress team. Each outing is only going to improve the players' confidence and how you can play the innings better or how you can chase down targets or set targets. So with every outing, the team is going to become better. And it's always trying to become better each day.</p>

<p><strong>One question about Smriti Mandhana. Do you think that she takes a bit much pressure while opening the innings? She takes a bit of time to break the shackles off and then get going. She can play a bit freely?</strong></p>

<p>I do not know that whether she takes pressure or no. She herself can probably answer that, whether she takes pressure. Number one, it's not about not taking pressure. When you're in a run situation and you're playing, even if you're in an office and you have to meet a deadline, there is pressure. So it's about not taking extra pressure, it's about handling expectations. So whether she takes pressure or not, she can answer that question. Now, you're saying about opening and non-opening. Again, it's up to her and between the team management where they decide what is the best batting position for her.</p>

<p><strong>Which player from India do you see&nbsp;will have an impact in the upcoming series? Which are the players to look out for?</strong></p>

<p>Again, there are a lot of players who are touring Australia for the very first time. I think, barring three or four of them, everyone is going there as a For a series, that especially. But WBW exposure has been provided. So it's exciting how Saima Thakur comes out, how Arundhati Reddy comes out. If Uma Chetry&nbsp;is given an opportunity to play there, very keen on watching her don the gloves for India and play in the one-day game. It will be very interesting how Renuka Singh, Thakur, of course, she already has experience, how she manages. Because it's a 50-over contest. It's not a 20-over match. It's very interesting and it's going to be a good contest.</p>

<p><strong>About Richa Ghosh - Can she bat up the order a bit. She has shown that she has the ability to rotate strike and make big&nbsp;hits. Can India benefit from sending her up the order?</strong></p>

<p>I think one game, she batted higher up against Australia. One of the games, she got 94 or 96. It's not about situation. We are 11 players, so somebody has to bat in the top order, somebody in the middle order, somebody in the lower order. So at this point of time, we are actually trying to understand what is our middle order and lower middle order. There are many contenders for top order, but we have to make sure that our middle and lower middle order is also getting an adequate attention. So anybody can bat in the top of the order. But who's going to bat in the middle order and the lower middle order is probably a bigger question right now or the bigger challenge.</p>

IND-W vs AUS-W ODI Series: 'About breaking shackles and barriers,' says former India skipper Anjum Chopra

<p>Former India women skipper Anjum Chopra thinks it's a little too early for a Women's Test Championship. It is to be noted that India Women's head coach Amol Mazumdar had said yes to the same after the recent Test victory against South Africa in a one-off Test.</p>

<p>India women spinner Sneh Rana, who took 10 wickets in the win against SA, had echoed the same views as coach Mazumdar.</p>

<p>Speaking to WION, Chopra, however, said that more countries need to play Test cricket before a championship like in men's cricket could be organised.</p>

<p>"It's little too early for Test Championship for women because there are not so many countries in the world which play Test match cricket. So, the first target or step towards the target of WTC (for women) will be the fact that more than 2 or 3 countries play Test cricket on a more regular basis."</p>

<p>"Something like two-day or three-day concept can get introduced for other teams which are not playing full fledged Test cricket. The better would be to introduce associate nations to cricket simultaneously while the full members play red ball than just playing a WTC between two or three teams," added Chopra.</p>

<p>The former skipper also spoke on the steps that could be taken by both BCCI and ICC to further make the game popular among the masses.</p>

<p>"Consistency, the more the girls play in front of the crowd, the more familiarity people will get about it. More competitive matches will assist in the growth," she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If the frequency increases in women's cricket with one series leading to another that will help. Not easy to achieve but it will help the growth immensely," she further added.</p>

'Little too early,' says former India skipper Anjum Chopra about Women's Test Championship

<p>India gave a tough fight to defending champions Australia but bowed out of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023, in South Africa, with a five-run loss in the first semi-final on Thursday (February 23). Being asked to bowl first, India were rusty as Australia rode on Beth Mooney's 54, captain Mag Lanning's 49* and Ashleigh Gardener's 31 to post 172-4. In reply, India were on course courtesy of Harmanpreet Kaur-Jemimah Rodrigues' 69-run fourth-wicket stand but fell apart to manage 167/8.</p>

<p>After India lost three quick wickets and were tottering at 28&nbsp;for 3 in pursuit of 173, in Newlands, Cape Town, skipper Harmanpreet and Jemimah revived the run-chase with a confident stand. The duo were going well when Jemimah fell for a good-looking 43, off 24 balls, before the Indian captain got run-out in an unfortunate manner, for a 34-ball 52. After her dismissal, India fell from 133-5, still in a good position with only 40 required off 32 balls, to get restricted for 167 for 8. Hence, the Indian skipper was in tears after the contest.</p>

<p>Former captain Anjum Chopra believes India were never among the title contenders at the just concluded Women's World Cup and going forward, she wants the team to "emerge from a legacy of poor decision-making" to turn the corner.</p>

<p>India's underwhelming show at the ICC showpiece in New Zealand ended with a heartbreaking loss to South Africa in the group stage.</p>

<p>"It is time women's cricket emerges from legacy of poor decision making and be honest about what they want to do and how they want to do going forward. Otherwise, we will remain a near about team, we will never get there," Chopra told PTI in an exclusive interview.</p>

<p>Expectations were high after the runners-up finish in the previous World Cup five years ago but Chopra, who watched the action from the sidelines as a commentator, feels that the Mithali Raj-led squad never looked winning the trophy in the lead up to the mega event.</p>

<p>India were the only team to get a bilateral series against hosts New Zealand ahead of the World Cup but they could still not get fully used to the conditions and zero in on a settled combination.</p>

<p>"I won't say India played poorly. They played a few ordinary matches where they could have performed better. "I would say the kind of preparation and kind of skill the players showed prior to the World cup (against NZ) to getting into the World Cup, it was surprising to see the approach against Pakistan, the way they batted (though they won).</p>

<p>"It was surprising decision making (opting to bowl) against New Zealand . Coming to a particular country well in advance, paying six games and if you are still unaware of the conditions, it would be unfair to say that India played poorly, I would say they were not in the contest," Chopra said.</p>

<p>India failed to beat any of the SENA teams including England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, ending with wins only against Pakistan, West Indies and debutants Bangladesh. Seeing India's campaign unfold they way it did, Chopra was left dispirited after the team failed to even reach the semifinals.</p>

<p>"It is not just players who need to take responsibility, it is everyone including support staff who should take the responsibility. It is not about crucifying one person. You will always have bad days but India were simply not consistent enough.</p>

<p>"As a player and broadcaster, from 1997 to 2022, I have seen every final and every semifinal. I never thought they could win the Cup but expected them to make the semis," said the left-handed batter.</p>

<p>"It is quite an imbalanced situation with the men's team performing consistently across formats but the women are not even able to reach the last four," she said.</p>

<p>Chopra feels India will remain a "near about" side if it doesn't focus on basics like fielding and running between the wickets. She feels that the players are not "unfit" but they are not "fit enough" compared to Australia and England.</p>

<p>"This (running between wickets) has been an issue for a long time. Either things have moved or they have not moved fast enough. If the bar has been raised, progression has to happen.</p>

<p>"It is a good sign that team has started scoring 270 regularly, it has progressed there in the last 15 months with no cricket the year before. If it can progress this much on that front, it can certainly improve in other areas." So what is the way forward for this team?</p>

<p>"Once we realise the present we can decide on the way forward. When you have a shaky present you can't have a bright future. "Cricket overall has improved. 300 has become the average score. Women's game has progressed and we need to improve with time."</p>

<p>Though Mithali has not announced retirement yet, it is certain that she won't be around when the next World Cup happens. Vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur is the front-runner for the job with star opener Smriti Mandhana being the other contender. Smriti is also eight years younger than Harmanpreet who is 33. The change of guard needs to happen now and Chopra says no better than T20 skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to lead India across formats.</p>

<p>"Harman has been an identified leader for a long time. She has been leading the T20 side for a long time. How can you brush aside an identified leader and get an absolute new person for the job? "Who was the best player of the tournament for India? It was Harman. You can't assign captaincy on hope. You did not make Virat Kohli captain on hope, you did not give Rohit captaincy on hope," she had her counter ready.</p>

Anjum Chopra has her say on India's performance in Women's World Cup 2022

<p>Coach Tarak Sinha, a mentor to dozens of first-class and international cricketers, passed away on Saturday and was grieved by the cricketing community, with his brightest ward Rishabh Pant admitting the loss has left him devastated.</p>

<p>Sinha passed away on Saturday morning after a protracted illness. He was 71 years old.</p>

<p>Mourning his death, India's star wicket-keeper Pant, who is now in the UAE for the ICC T20 World Cup, said he will remember him every time he steps on&nbsp;the field.</p>

<p>"My mentor, coach, motivator, my biggest critic and my greatest fan. You took care of me like your son, I am devastated. You will always be with me whenever I walk out onto the field. My heartfelt condolences &amp; prayers. May your soul rest in peace, Tarak sir," tweeted Pant.</p>

<p>Pant was one of Sinha's sharpest students. Devender Sharma, Sinha's longtime assistant, actively coached him.</p>

<p>Sinha, revered by his pupils as "Ustad ji" was a father figure in Delhi's legendary Sonnet Club, which produced some of the country's greatest cricketers who dominated local and international cricket.</p>

<p>Over the course of over five decades, he nourished, cultivated, and managed raw talent, providing them with a stage to perform and wings to soar through his club.</p>

<p>"Feel a lot of pain on the demise of passing away of Ustaad ji #TarakSinha. He was one of the rare coaches who gave India more than a dozen Test Cricketers &amp; the values he inculcated in his students helped Indian cricket immensely. Condolences to his family and students," he tweeted.</p>

Coach Tarak Sinha, a mentor to dozens of first-class and international cricketers, passed away on Saturday and was grieved by the cricketing community, with his brightest ward Rishabh Pant admitting the loss has left him devastated.

Sinha passed away on Saturday morning after a protracted illness. He was 71 years old. Mourning his death, India's star wicket-keeper Pant, who is now in the UAE for the ICC T20 World Cup, said he will remember him every time he steps on the field. "My mentor, coach, motivator, my biggest critic and my greatest fan. You took care of me like your son, I am devastated. You will always be with me whenever I walk out onto the field. Devender Sharma, Sinha's longtime assistant, actively coached him. Sinha, revered by his pupils as "Ustad ji" was a father figure in Delhi's legendary Sonnet Club, which produced some of the country's greatest cricketers who dominated local and international cricket. Over the course of over five decades, he nourished, cultivated, and managed raw talent, providing them with a stage to perform and wings to soar through his club. Among his earlier students were Delhi cricket legends. Former India opener Virender Sehwag expressed his sadness after the loss. He was one of the rare coaches who gave India more than a dozen Test Cricketers & the values he inculcated in his students helped Indian cricket immensely.
