<p>Giving details, the police said three militants came to his house in Nowgam Verinag area and asked for the keys for his car. While driving the vehicle away, they pumped bullets into Mir, who was popular in the area as 'Atal', they said.</p>

<p>A police official said Mir was rushed to a hospital in a critical condition where he succumbed to injuries.</p>

<p>The area has been cordoned off to nab the suspects, the official said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Incident-free voting marked the second leg of three-phased polling for south Kashmir’s Anantnag parliamentary constituency of Kulgam district with a total voter turnout of 10.32 per cent, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Jammu and Kashmir, Shailendra Kumar said.</p>

<p>Addressing a press conference at Banquet Hall in Srinagar, the CEO informed that the overall percentage recorded in the district today was 10.3 per cent with the highest in Noorabad segment at 20.58 per cent.</p>

<p>He said that for the smooth polling across the district, 433 polling stations were set up out of which 20 were model polling stations. Four all-women polling stations were also set up across the district.</p>

<p>Divulging the details of the voter turnout in the district, the CEO informed that the total number of votes polled was 3,5524 with the highest turnout of 20.58 per cent recorded in Noorabad segment of the district. With the completion of today’s phase, the overall poll percentage of Anantnag constituency has touched 12.35 per cent.</p>

<p>He further elaborated that the total percentage of voting till date in various parliamentary constituencies in the state including Baramulla, Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur and Anantnag was recorded at 47.06 per cent with total votes polled at around 33,64104 out of 71,49047 total electorates.</p>

<p>The CEO complimented voters, political parties, contesting candidates, media, polling staff and security forces for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the polling in the state.</p>

<p>Over 3.45 lakh electors were scheduled to exercise their franchise in Kulgam district of south Kashmir region in the second leg of three-phased schedule for Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency today, including 28,761 first-time voters and 2,870 migrant voters. Jammu and Kashmir: Terrorists attack home guard of PDP leader Peer Hussain in Anantnag

<p>I saw a strange picture the other day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The picture (above) was I thought at first of a man on his knees. In his hands, pointed upwards, he held a catapult.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The "weapon" was pulled back, ready to launch a projectile at someone or something.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then, when I looked more closely, I saw crutches in the background.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I imagine then that the man was without a leg, or legs. The caption that went with the picture was frustratingly "incomplete" — it said something like "Palestinians clash with Israeli defence forces on the Gaza border" there was nothing about the man himself, or why there might have been crutches lying behind him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some 16 Palestinians were killed in the clashes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I do not know what happened to the man in the picture.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But I think I know why he might have been launching stones at soldiers who have colonised his land. And I thought back then to another picture that we often use here at wionews.com to try and explain the situation in Kashmir.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When it finally began to lull, the women joined in, and it picked up again.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"How does a crowd chant for so long? What keeps it going?" I had written then.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The answer is simple.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Like the Palestinian man with the crutches, or the Kashmiri schoolchildren in the other pictures, the villagers of Hillerbhai Kokernag believe soldiers have colonised their land. And from what I saw, I imagine they will stop at nothing to throw them out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We have already been warned of that.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's security forces recently killed 13 Kashmiri militants in one day. The killings were dubbed the Indian Army's "greatest success" in over a decade.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But a day or two later, a commentator gently reminded us that we might be barking up the wrong tree. And that what we are forgetting is that along with the 13 militants, three civilians were also killed, and that another was reportedly used as a human shield by the security forces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And, that 50 civilians were injured in clashes that broke out between the security forces and locals after the encounters. The civilians, the commentator said, were showing "solidarity" with the militants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That he said was the bigger battle. The one against the "people". That everyone in Kashmir knows the militants are no match for the Indian military.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But how do you beat a boy or a crippled man with a stone, even if you're armed with a gun?&nbsp;</p>

<p>And when an entire people pick up stones against you, that battle is unwinnable.&nbsp;</p>

How do you beat a boy or a crippled man with a stone, even if you're armed with a gun?

I saw a strange picture the other day. The picture (above) was I thought at first of a man on his knees. In his hands, pointed upwards, he held a catapult. The "weapon" was pulled back, ready to launch a projectile at someone or something. Then, when I looked more closely, I saw crutches in the background. I imagine then that the man was without a leg, or legs. The caption that went with the picture was frustratingly "incomplete" — it said something like "Palestinians clash with Israeli defence forces on the Gaza border" there was nothing about the man himself, or why there might have been crutches lying behind him. Some 16 Palestinians were killed in the clashes. I do not know what happened to the man in the picture. But I think I know why he might have been launching stones at soldiers who have colonised his land. And I thought back then to another picture that we often use here at wionews.com to try and explain the situation in Kashmir. Here it is: (Kashmiri schoolboys pelt stones at Indian security forces.) Here's another: (Kashmiri schoolgirls do the same.) I was in Kashmir after the killing of the young Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. The valley had erupted in fury and as the Indian security forces clamped down on the protests that ensued, the bodies began to pile up. By the time that summer of gore ended, the death toll had touched a 100. Early one morning we left for south Kashmir, the hotbed of the protests. <p>News reports are now saying two Army personnel have also been killed in the encounters. The reports had earlier said two soldiers were injured in the encounters, one in the Kachdoora encounter, the other in the Dragad&nbsp;encounter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The operations were reportedly carried out before dawn.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"One terrorist killed in Dialgam Anantnag after efforts of his family/ J&K Police failed to surrender, one caught alive. In Draggad Shopian 7 bodies of terrorists recovered including top commanders," Jammu and Kashmir DGP SP Vaid tweeted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Encounter also going on in Kachdoora Shopian, some civilian trapped efforts to rescue them on," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reports added that clashes erupted in Shopian after locals tried to march to the encounter site.</p>

<p>The reports said that at least 50 people have been injured. And that many of them have pellet injuries and have been admitted to Shopian Hospital.&nbsp;</p>

Jammu and Kashmir: Terrorists attack traffic cop in Khanabal, Anantnag

<p>On Thursday evening terrorits struck at three different places in south Kashmir.</p>

<p>First the terrorists targeted an army patrol which came under attack in Shopian area. No casualties was reported in the attack.</p>

<p>In the second incident, a Special police officer (SPO) and his wife were shot at in Anantnag district. He later succumbed to injuries while his wife continues to remain critical.</p>

<p>Reports said that suspected terrorists barged into the home of SPO Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh at Katoo Wapzan villlage of Dashnipora belt in Bijbehara and killed him</p>

<p>Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh's wife was injured. She was immediately rushed to sub-district hospital Bijbehara where her condition is reportedly critical.</p>

<p>In the third incident in Kulgam, a civilian was fired at by unknown gunmen.</p>

<p>The gunmen fired at a local in Chauncer, Kulgam. He reportedly received a bullet in his leg and was shifted to hospital.</p>

One SLR, 2 magazines, 40 rounds, one Chinese hand grenade and a pouch was recovered from the slain terrorist. <p>Mobile data services have been stopped in Jammu, only state-run BSNL broadband services with limited speed is working, news agency ANI reported.</p>

<p>A bus bearing the registration number GJ09Z 9976 was attacked at around 8.20 pm(local time) on Monday near Khanabal when it was on its way to Jammu.</p>

<p>Police told PTI the bus was not a part of the <em>yatra</em> convoy which is being provided elaborate security. The terrorists first attacked a bullet-proof bunker of the police at Botengoo, a police official said, when the police retaliated, the terrorists fled, firing indiscriminately at the bus carrying the pilgrims.</p>

<p>Seven pilgrims were killed and 32 were injured. The police and top government sources have told PTI the bus driver had violated rules for the pilgrimage, which state that &quot;no yatra vehicle should be on the highway after 7pm&quot; as the security cover is withdrawn after that time.</p>
