In India,&nbsp;anaemia prevalence is over 50 per cent. The risk of anaemia is greatest for females who are sexually active. Data from National Family Health Survey-3 shows that anaemia is particularly high, i.e. 65.3 per cent, in&nbsp;women aged 15 to 49.

Therefore, it is important to assess anaemia which is a risk for pregnancy-related complications, including a greater risk of having a preterm delivery or low-birth-weight baby and also burdens by making it harder for the mother to fight infections and raising the possibility of blood loss during labour.

More than 500 million women of reproductive age suffer from anaemia, which is a significant public health issue for low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and has long-term detrimental effects on women's health, their children's health, and economic development.

A haemoglobin level of less than 11g&nbsp;per deciliter is considered anaemic in women of reproductive age. In&nbsp;the race to attain a zero-figure body image,&nbsp;some girls tend to follow all sorts of internet fad diets. &nbsp;

The main predictor of anaemia is a shortage in micronutrients such as iron, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin A, and folic acid, which are connected to insufficient food intake. Large-scale research has also revealed that poor socioeconomic level and lack of education are important risk factors for anaemia in women.

Uneducated women have poor knowledge of the quality and nutritional content of the foods they consume. High fertility, physical work, parasite infections, and menstrual disorders are similarly responsible for anaemia in women.

Anaemia has a significant negative impact on women of reproductive age, including lower productivity owing to decreased work capacity, cognitive impairment, greater susceptibility to infections due to its influence on immunity, stillbirth/miscarriage, and maternal death. Additionally, anaemia in women of reproductive age may lead to infant/child mortality as well as other adverse foetal and neonatal outcomes such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and a depletion of the newborn's iron reserves.&nbsp;

Under this campaign, people suffering from malnutrition and anaemia will be provided free of cost nutritious food every day,' the Chief Minister said while addressing the state-level programme held in Vikas Nagar Stadium of District Headquarters Kondagaon today.

'According to the latest data released by the NITI Aayog, 37.60 per cent children of age below 5 years<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/chhattisgarh-seven-naxals-killed-in-encounter-in-rajnandgaon-240364"> in Chhattisgarh</a> are suffering from malnutrition and 41.50 per cent daughters and mothers in the state are suffering from anaemia,' he said.

The Chief Minister said that the campaign to make Chhattisgarh free of malnutrition and anaemia was started as a pilot project in Korba, Sarguja, Koriya and selected panchayats of other districts in Bastar region, under which free nutritious food was provided to all the people suffering from anaemia and malnutrition.

'This campaign was initiated as a pilot project in the Bastar region from July 2019 and it will be soon conducted in other aspirational districts of the state as well... The campaign will be launched on Gandhi Jayanti, free nutritious meals will be provided every day to the patients of malnutrition and anaemia, as per the list issued by each of the gram panchayat, customized as per their physical requirement and preferences,' he said.

Baghel said he will ensure maximum participation of renowned charitable organisations, public representatives, NGOs, media groups and other competent people.

The Chief Minister also announced a hike in scholarship for students of pre-metric hostels from Rs 700 to Rs 1000 and a significant increase in the number of seats in the colleges.

The food items would be fortified with iron, folic acid, Vitamin A, D, B-12, zinc and other nutrients under an initiative taken by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Health Minister Anil Vij. &nbsp;

India is facing a serious burden of undernutrition, according to a global report released today which shows that more than half the women of reproductive age in the country suffer from anaemia.

The Global Nutrition Report 2017, which looked at 140 countries including India, found &#39;significant burdens&#39; of three important forms of malnutrition used as an indicator of broader trends.

These include childhood stunting, anaemia in women of reproductive age, and overweight adult women.

Latest figures show that 38 per cent of children under five are affected by stunting - children too short for their age due to lack of nutrients, suffering irreversible damage to brain capacity.

About 21 per cent of children under 5 are defined as &#39;wasted&#39; or &#39;severely wasted&#39; - meaning they do not weigh enough for their height.

Over half of women of reproductive age - 51 per cent - suffer from anaemia - a serious condition that can have long-term health impacts for mother and child.

More than 22 per cent of adult women are overweight, a rising concern as women are disproportionately affected by the global obesity epidemic, according to the report.

While the country has shown some progress in addressing under-5 stunting, it has made no progress or presents worse outcomes in the percentage of reproductive-age women with anaemia, and is off course in terms of reaching targets for reducing adult obesity and diabetes, the report said.

&quot;The Global Nutrition Report highlights that the double burden of undernutrition and obesity needs to be tackled as part of India&#39;s national nutrition strategy,&quot; said Purnima Menon, an independent expert group on the Global Nutrition Report.

&quot;For undernutrition, especially, major efforts are needed to close the inequality gap,&quot; said Menon, Senior Research Fellow in the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)&#39;s South Asia Office in New Delhi.

The Global Nutrition Report 2017 calls for nutrition to be placed at the heart of efforts to end poverty, fight disease, raise educational standards and tackle climate change.

&quot;We know that a well-nourished child is one third more likely to escape poverty,&quot; said Jessica Fanzo, Professor at Johns Hopkins University.

&quot;They will learn better in school, be healthier and grow into productive contributors to their economies. Good nutrition provides the brainpower, the &#39;grey matter infrastructure&#39; to build the economies of the future,&quot; said Fanzo, also the Global Nutrition Report Co-Chair.

The report also found that 88 per cent of countries studied face a serious burden of two or three forms of malnutrition.

It highlights the damaging impact this burden is having on broader global development efforts.

The report found that overweight and obesity are on the rise in almost every country, with two billion of the world&#39;s seven billion people now overweight or obese and a less than one per cent chance of meeting the global target of halting the rise in obesity and diabetes by 2025.

In India, 16 per cent of adult men and 22 per cent of adult women are overweight.
