Former South Carolina Governor and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley was among the opening speakers of the 2020 Republican National Convention.

Republicans were in attack mode on the very first night. From racism to economy to the American dream and China, the Republicans came prepared — and countered the Democrats on every aspect.

The daughter of an Indian immigrant herself, Nikki Haley did not hesitate to invoke her Indian heritage — she argued about a constructive way of uniting America.

She called herself a 'brown girl' in a black and white world that was not racist at all.

Twice elected as the Governor of South Carolina, Haley said, “In much of the Democratic Party, it’s now fashionable to say that America is racist. That is a lie. America is not a racist country."

“This is personal for me. I am the proud daughter of Indian immigrants. They came to America and settled in a small southern town. My father wore a turban. My mother wore a sari. I was a brown girl in a black and white world,” she said on Monday at the mostly-virtual four-day convention during which she fully backed President Trump and his policies.

Born as Nimrata Randhawa in South Carolina, she is the daughter of Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa, who emigrated from Amritsar in Punjab.

Haley said her family faced discrimination and hardship but her parents never gave in to grievance and hate.

"My mom built a successful business. My dad taught 30 years at a historically Black college. And the people of South Carolina chose me as their first minority and first female governor,” Haley said.

“America is a story that’s a work in progress. Now is the time to build on that progress, and make America even freer, fairer, and better for everyone. That’s why it’s tragic to see so much of the Democratic Party turn a blind eye toward riots and rage,” she said, in a speech that sent her already-intense 2024 presidential primary buzz off the charts.

Haley said the American people know they can do better.

"And of course we know that every single black life is valuable. The black cops who’ve been shot in the line of duty – they matter. The black small business owners who’ve watched their life’s work go up in flames – they matter," she said.

"The black kids who’ve been gunned down on the playground – their lives matter too. And their lives are being ruined and stolen by the violence on our streets,” she said.

She said things were not like this five years back.

“It doesn’t have to be like this. It wasn’t like this in South Carolina five years ago. Our state came face-to-face with evil. A white supremacist walked into Mother Emanuel Church during Bible Study," she said, referring to the 2015 Charleston church shooting, in which nine African Americans were killed.

"Twelve African Americans pulled up a chair and prayed with him for an hour. Then he began to shoot,” she said.

“After that horrific tragedy, we didn’t turn against each other. We came together – black and white, Democrat and Republican. Together, we made the hard choices needed to heal – and removed a divisive symbol, peacefully and respectfully," she added.

What happened then should give us hope now, Haley said.

"America isn’t perfect. But the principles we hold dear are perfect. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in America,” Haley said.

“It’s time to keep that blessing alive for the next generation. This President, and this Party, are committed to that noble task. We seek a nation that rises together, not falls apart in anarchy and anger. We know that the only way to overcome America’s challenges is to embrace America’s strengths,” she said.

"We must choose the only candidate who has and who will continue delivering on that vision," she said, strongly backing President Trump for re-election in the November 3 presidential election.

Meanwhile, US media reports said Haley's speech at the convention was an important symbolic moment for the Republican Party. She invoked her immigrant heritage and election as South Carolina's governor despite her "Brown skin" as a validation of the American Dream and the country's racial progress.

Haley's speech very well may position her as a front-runner for president in 2024, the reports said.

The US elections are slated to begin in November, and the campaigning is in full swing.

Elections involve the elaborate process of laying out policies, advertising, and in this peculiar election there is an attempt to strike the right chord with the Indian-American community.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans are now tailoring their narratives to suit the interests of this community which could be the game changer in the elections.

What are the Democrats offering?

Besides Kamala Harris and her dosa videos, Democrat Joe Biden’s team has promised to stand by India as it confronts new threats along the border.

The following lines have been lifted from his manifesto.

“Biden believes there can be no tolerance for terrorism in South Asia – cross-border or otherwise. The Biden administration will work with India to support a rules-based and stable Indo-Pacific region in which no country, including China, is able to threaten its neighbours with impunity."

In terms of immigration, Biden is promising to overturn the Trump administration's planned switch to a merit-based system than family ties.

Trump recently put a freeze on H1-B visas and green cards, and Biden is promising to bring them back.

“Biden will support family-based immigration and reduce the family visa backlog. He will increase the number of visas offered for permanent or work-based immigration. And eliminate the limits on employment-based green cards, which have kept so many Indian families in waiting for too long”, his manifesto says.

And the Republicans?

Team Trump plans on keeping the Indian vote bank intact by relying on India’s internal issues, and a promise to not interfere.

Trump’s campaign team claims “Donald Trump never interfered in J&K issue, stood up to China”

They say the US President backed New Delhi in the face of Chinese provocations, and stayed away from India's bilateral issues with Pakistan.

Trump, however kept offering mediation on the Kashmir issue despite being repeatedly refused by India. At the same time, Trump did back India in the standoff against China.

So how do the odds stack?

Indian Americans have traditionally voted for the Democrats but Trump has bigger things to worry about as his fellow Republicans withdraw support.

In July senator Lindsey Graham decided to publicly disagree with Trump and praised Dr Anthony Fauci's efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the US.

At least five Republican senators have decided to skip the grand old party's convention which begins on the August 24. Some have cited the pandemic as the reason.

When Donald Trump suggested delaying the elections, not many came out in his support. The president might have more to worry about than the Indian-American diaspora.

Amid the growing number of concerns in the United States, a new trend has surfaced in the country. According to a new research published on August 9, a record number of people are now giving up US citizenship.

In the first half of 2020, over 5,800 gave up their citizenship of the US, as compared to the 2,072 Americans who gave it up in all of 2019, as per data from Bambridge Accountants.

Major turmoil in the country

The US has been the stage of a lot of turmoil in 2020, as protests against racism intensified and continue to swell cities sporadically. Additionally, the ambivalent response to COVID-19 has made US the hardest-hit country in the entire world. The US has recorded 5 million cases of the virus alone.

As per the firm’s data, the number of citizens giving up their citizenship of the country has shot up tremendously. To reach this conclusion they studied government data on citizenship, which is published every three months.

Alistair Bambridge told CNN that those who gave up their citizenship were mostly people who were already out of the States and those who had decided “they’ve had enough of everything”.

The central factors influencing people’s decisions to give up their citizenship may be primarily based on Trump’s mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic, clubbed with political movements brewing in the country.

Besides being dissatisfied with the contemporary socio-political landscape in the country, many have left the country due to taxes, as per Bambridge.
