A group of six skiers, five of whom died in the Swiss Alps, made a valiant attempt to survive before the sad end: digging snow caves.

They did this in an apparent bid to shield themselves from the cold, revealed the lead rescuer in an interview with Sky News.

Five members of the same family were among the six skiers who embarked on a ski tour from Zermatt, Switzerland, aiming to reach Arolla.

Anjan Truffer, the head of mountain rescue at Air Zermatt AG, was present when the bodies of five cross-country skiers were discovered on Sunday (Mar 10)&nbsp;near Tete Blanche mountain, following their reported disappearance.&nbsp;

The search for a sixth person is still underway, though Truffer stressed the need for realistic expectations.&nbsp;

Truffer told Sky News&nbsp;that his team faced a delay reaching the&nbsp;site near the famed Matterhorn mountain in the Alps due to snowstorms.

Upon arrival, his French counterparts had already found two bodies.

"We started to look for the others with avalanche transceivers and probes and we immediately discovered two more bodies," he said.

<h2>Desperate efforts for survival</h2>

Helicopter footage&nbsp;released by police in Valais canton showed ski tracks and snow piles believed to be makeshift shelters constructed by the skiers.

Truffer said these were their attempts to shield themselves from the elements by burrowing into the snow.

"They did try to make a snow cave to protect themselves from the wind," he told Sky News.

Truffer said the group's lack of suitable equipment, particularly small shovels ill-equipped for heavy snowfall, hindered their ability to cope with rapidly accumulating snow.

Setting off from Zermatt, the skiers were also ill-prepared for the harsh conditions, with Truffer noting their light attire.

It is speculated they were training for a race before encountering trouble.

While their ages are estimated to range between 21 and 58, official identification by authorities has not yet been completed.

Scientists in Italy are investigating the mysterious appearance of pink glacial ice in the Alps, caused by algae that accelerate the effects of climate change. There is debate about where the algae come from, but Biagio Di Mauro of Italy's National Research Council said the pink snow observed on parts of the Presena glacier is likely caused by the same plant found in Greenland.

There is debate about where the algae come from, but Biagio Di Mauro of Italy's National Research Council said the pink snow observed on parts of the Presena glacier is likely caused by the same plant found in Greenland. "The alga is not dangerous, it is a natural phenomenon that occurs during the spring and summer periods in the middle latitudes but also at the Poles," said Di Mauro, who had previously studied the algae at the Morteratsch glacier in Switzerland. The plant, known as Ancylonema nordenskioeldii, is present in Greenland's so-called Dark Zone, where the ice is also melting. Normally ice reflects more than 80 per cent of the sun's radiation back into the atmosphere, but as algae appear, they darken the ice so that it absorbs the heat and melts more quickly. More algae appear as the ice melts more rapidly, giving them vital water and air and adding red hues to the white ice at the Passo Gavia, altitude 2,618 metres (8,590 feet). "Everything that darkens the snow causes it to melt because it accelerates the absorption of radiation," said Di Mauro. "We are trying to quantify the effect of other phenomena besides the human one on the overheating of the Earth," said Di Mauro, noting that the presence of hikers and ski lifts could also have an impact on the algae. Tourists at the glacier lament the impact of climate change. "Overheating of the planet is a problem, the last thing we needed was algae," said tourist Marta Durante. "Unfortunately we are doing irreversible damage. We are already at the point of no return, I think." Elisa Pongini from Florence said she felt the Earth was "giving us back everything we have done to it". "2020 is a special year: terrible things have happened," she said. "In my opinion, atmospheric phenomena are worsening. Climate change is increasingly evident."

During his 24-hour-visit, described by officials as &quot;short but very focused&quot;, Modi will also host a dinner for CEOs from across the world -- 20 of Indian companies and 40 from elsewhere -- on Monday evening and will interact with a large gathering of 120 members of WEF&#39;s international business community on Tuesday.

Besides, he will hold a bilateral meeting with Swiss President Alain Berset, among other pull-asides, as per the government officials.

Modi will be accompanied by six union ministers -- Arun Jaitley, Suresh Prabhu, Piyush Goyal, Dharmendra Pradhan, M J Akbar and Jitendra Singh.

The CEO delegation, led by apex industry body CII, will include Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani, Azim Premji, Rahul Bajaj, N Chandrasekaran, Chanda Kochhar, Uday Kotak and Ajay Singh, among others.

Among global leaders, US President Donald Trump will be there to deliver the closing address, but any meeting with Prime Minister Modi is unlikely as the two would not be in town on the same day.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will also be in Davos, but officials in India have said no meeting is planned between him and Modi.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are among the other attendees.

While Trump is expected to talk about his &#39;America First&#39; policy, officials in India said Modi&#39;s central message at this multilateral forum will be about India being an economy that can be an engine of global growth and which wants others to participate in its growth and also wants to contribute to others&#39; development.

A lot of focus is expected on what Trump says and what would be the response of other world leaders, including from Germany, France and the UK.

Ahead of the summit, an annual WEF survey, likely to be discussed in detail during the meeting, showed that the world will see risks related to environment, economy and international relations intensify this year with a majority of stakeholders expecting political or economic confrontations between major powers to worsen.

In a first at the WEF summit, India will also host yoga training sessions for the entire duration of the meeting, while also showcasing Indian heritage and culture in Davos.

On the sidelines of the WEF summit, the Swiss government will also host the annual informal WTO ministerial meeting, which will be attended by Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu and his global counterparts.

According to a Swiss government statement, negotiations on a bilateral investment protection pact and the envisaged free trade agreement between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Switzerland is a member, will figure prominently during Modi&#39;s meeting with Berset.

Modi is expected to encapsulate making of &#39;a new, young and innovative India&#39;, while he is also expected to talk about his experience with &#39;cooperative federalism&#39; in India, while urging the world for a collective crackdown on terrorism, economic imbalances, cyber threats and various societal ills.

According to officials, Modi will also talk about numerous steps they have taken to make it easier to do business in India, check corruption, clamp down on black money, streamline taxation and boost sustainable growth.

Another star speaker will be ex-RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, who has been praised as well as criticised often for his vocal views on everything from politics to economics and is credited for predicting the global economic crisis of 2008. He will speak on the power of economic narratives and how policymakers can address the challenges of the 21st century.
