At least 16 people were killed and 48 others were injured after two buses collided in central Mali, the transport ministry said on Friday (July 26),&nbsp;reported&nbsp;news agency AFP.

"A traffic accident happened on Thursday (July 25), around 8:30 am (0830 GMT), at Ouan in San region," the ministry stated, adding, the two vehicles were involved in a frontal collision.

According to the ministry, the accident was caused by the driver's&nbsp;disregard for speed limits. All injured individuals were immediately taken to a local medical facility.

An investigation had been opened to find out the exact circumstances of the accident, the transport&nbsp;ministry stated.

Separately, on Thursday, in the neighbouring West African country,&nbsp;Senegal a road accident&nbsp;resulted in six deaths and 14 injuries, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said in a statement. The accident took place&nbsp;between Ndouloumadji and Ourossogui near the Mauritanian border

<h2>Road accidents: A frequent occurrence in Mali, Senegal</h2>

Thirty-one people were killed and 10 others were injured in a road accident in southeastern Mali in February. The bus was en route to neighbouring Burkina Faso from the Malian town of Kenieba when it fell off a bridge crossing the Bagoe River.

According to local officials, the fatal accident was&nbsp;likely caused by to driver's failure to control the vehicle.

In February, 15 people were killed and 46 others&nbsp;were left injured after a bus heading towards the capital Bamako collided with a truck, according to AFP.

On January 8, more than 40 people were killed after&nbsp;two buses collided in Senegal. The incident highlighted&nbsp;the well-known problems of the roads in Senegal as in many African countries: dilapidated and dangerous vehicles, reckless driving, and widespread corruption among officials in charge of enforcing the law or passing driving licenses.

Notably, road accidents are frequent in Mali and Senegal, mostly because of poor road conditions, vehicles and rash driving.

Thirteen people died and four others were severely injured after a minibus collided with a parked truck on the Pune-Bengaluru Highway in Karnataka on Friday (June 28) morning.

While 11 people died on the spot, two others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at the hospital.

However, the cause of the accident is not known so far and&nbsp;reports claim that the driver of the minibus&nbsp;fell asleep at the wheel.
