Earlier, talking about the story of the film, De Niro said, "I guess you could say it’s about a father-son relationship; the father has criticism for the son, the son has criticism for the father. They have a relationship that’s not in huge dramatic ways; it’s a family comedy. It’s the kinda classic thing where Salvo, the father, is not crazy about the prospective in-laws. They are a bunch of stiffs and they’re not too sure about him either — the prospective son-in-law. But they (in-laws) do pretty well, they’re actually pretty nice about it and Salvo - they tolerate Salvo, I guess."

He added, "There are a couple of scenes where he says ‘what are you doing’ in this whole situation which is another classic one. I’m sure many families go through that, especially when it’s a whole cultural clash.”

About My Father received negative reviews, with a rating of 35 per cent on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads, "About My Father finds star/co-writer Sebastian Maniscalco drawing on his own life for material -- and inadvertently proving that a funny standup routine doesn't necessarily make for an entertaining film."

“I knew Sebastian, of course. Not well, but I have worked with him a little bit; had seen a couple of his shows, and worked on The Irishman with him. So, we had a reading and then after that, I pretty much was like "let's do it - just had to find the time and when to do it.”

He further spoke about the script “I liked it and saw that the script had a personal element from Sebastian's experience, obviously. And, after getting to know Laura Terruso a little bit, I realised her background; she was from Brooklyn, Italian-American - they both [Sebastian and Laura] knew the world (from the movie standpoint), and they are from the world. This was important as far as how this was to be done, and whatever support I need, I got it from them - they know what they are doing, and that was an important part of it," he said.

“The film is about two different families, from very different socio-economic backgrounds, colliding during a holiday weekend, before they realise that those differences are what make them unique.” Sebastian’s character is carrying surprisingly little cultural baggage, and “is more open to different kinds of lifestyles and people,” Maniscalco notes.
