With the roll out of 5G technology, the world will be entering a new era of internet speeds but researchers in Japan have achieved data transmission speeds that are almost 100,000 times faster than 5G. The Network Research Institute at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) claimed the world record by completing data transmission at an astonishing speed of 1.02 petabit (PB) per second. That roughly translated into 125,000 Gigabytes (GB) per second, and it can be transmitted over a distance of about over 51.7 km.

The feat was achieved by using optic fibres which were 0.125mm in diameter and the NICT described the massive achievement as “a major step towards the realisation of ultra-high-throughput optical links... compatible with existing cabling technologies for near-term adoption.”

“These fibres can multiply the transmission capacity but are still compatible with existing manufacturing processes and have emerged as a likely candidate for near-term commercial adoption of these transformative communications technology,” NICT said in their official statement.

The previous record also belonged to NICT with 1 petabit per second which was achieved in 2020.

“The state, equally, has an ongoing duty — again, on the principle that ‘prevention’ is better than ‘cure’ — to scientifically vet all products and technologies before they are permitted to be commercialised and/or accessed by society at large,” the petition stated.

“If the telecommunications industry’s plans for 5G come to fruition, no person, no animal, no bird, no insect and no plant on Earth will be able to avoid exposure, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to levels of RF radiation that are 10x to 100x times greater than what exists today, without any possibility of escape anywhere on the planet. Despite widespread denial by vested and partisan interests, the evidence that radio frequency radiation is most certainly harmful to life is already overwhelming. These 5G plans threaten to provoke serious, irreversible effects on humans and permanent damage to all of the Earth’s ecosystems,” it added.

The plea cited the example of Brussels in Belgium which became the first major city in the world to actually halt any further steps in the 5G rollout in April 2019 on account of recognised health hazards.

For years Japanese companies have been sitting on a record cash-pile as they remain wary about boosting wages and investment.

Japan's economy grew at an annualised rate of 1.8 per cent&nbsp;in July-September, backed by capital spending and domestic demand, but analysts expect growth to slow in the current quarter as the Sino-US&nbsp;trade war and the national sales tax hike likely weighed on the world's third-largest economy.

Weak business spending would be another blow to Prime Minister<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-asks-japan-to-reduce-trade-surplus-before-abes-visit-267468"> Shinzo Abe</a>'s stimulus policy, or "Abenomics", which is aimed at stoking a cycle of higher wages, household, and corporate incomes and spending.

Dunford was alluding to negotiations between European countries and Huawei, which hopes its 5G technology, more advanced than its rivals, will be deployed around the world.

The US government though has deep suspicions that Huawei's technology would offer the Chinese government the ability to monitor traffic, making it a security risk.

The US government has urged allies not to adopt the technology, pressuring Germany most recently to avoid it.

Xu Zhijun criticized the US at a press conference in Shenzhen, accusing Washington of carrying out a "coordinated, tactical geopolitical campaign" against Huawei.

He also said that the current discussions around 5G technology - of which Huawei is one of the main promoters - revolve around politics and questioned the US’ motives.

"Some say that because these countries are using Huawei equipment, it makes it harder for US agencies to obtain these countries' data," Xu added.

His statements come after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made an Eastern European tour where he warned about the growing presence of Huawei in the region.

During his visit, Pompeo warned US allies about deploying the Chinese company's products, saying those that do so would make it difficult for the US to partner with.

Xu also said that Huawei will invest more than $2 billion over the next five years to improve the cybersecurity of its equipment, including rewriting code, as an additional step to increase the confidence of foreign firms.

At the end of last month, the US Department of Justice formally accused Huawei, two affiliated companies and its chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, of 13 counts of fraud and conspiracy to bypass sanctions on Iran.

Huawei has been the subject of constant scrutiny by the US government which has banned the company from installing its telecommunications equipment in important networks of the country over concerns that they can be used to spy on the US.

The governments of Australia and New Zealand have also banned the installation of Huawei’s 5G equipment, while Canada is reviewing its relationship with the firm and the UK has asked the company to fix problems that pose risks to the network.

Huawei, which is the world's largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment and the second-largest smartphone maker, claimed that it posed no threat to US security and added that the company was operating independently of the government of China.
