Afghanistan fans were ecstatic on Monday (Oct 23) evening after their national side beat Pakistan in the ODI World Cup in India. Displaying formidable batting, Afghanistan won by eight wickets to register their second win and continue their giant-killing form having earlier beaten defending champions England. It was also Afghanistan's first ever win against Pakistan in an ODI. After the match, the fans gathered in huge numbersin the national capital Kabul, and were seen celebrating in the streets.

Fireworks lit up the Kabul sky while sweets were distributed in the streets as Rashid Khan and Co enjoyed their first ODI win against their former World Cup champion neighbours. Kids were seen dancing as fans showered their love and affection for the national side with messages. People gathered in the city center to celebrate.
Considering the occasion, Afghanistan were in total control of the match and showed great maturity in the 283-run chase. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) and Ibrahim Zadran (87) laid the foundation for the win as they put together 130 runs for the opening wicket. This laidthe perfect platform for victory as later Rahmat Shah (unbeaten 77) and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (unbeaten 48) took the team past the winning target convincingly.

The win also saw them rise to sixth place in the standings in the ODI World Cup, now giving them a good chance of making the semifinals. Pakistan lost considerable ground in the Net Run Rate (NRR) and have dropped to fifth in the standings. This was also their third consecutive defeat in the league stage, having earlier lost to India and Australia.
Afghanistan will now look to continue their giant-killing form as they take on Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. If they do manage to win those fixtures coupled with poor results for other sides, they will have a good chance of making it to the semifinals.
Pakistan in the meantime will have a mountain to climb with fixtures against South Africa, New Zealand, and England on the cards. A defeat for them in two of those remaining four matches could see them exit the competition early.
