IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans appoint Shubman Gill new captain after Hardik Pandya trade

Shubman Gill has been announced as the new captain of the one-time winners Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the IPL mini-auction for the 2024 edition, on Monday (Nov 27). After Hardik Pandya was traded to the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI), in a historic deal, Gill has been elevated as the captain of the Gujarat franchise. The 24-year-old will lead a side filled with experienced campaigners such as Rashid Khan - who was serving as Hardik's deputy since the franchise's admission in 2022 - David Miller, Mohammed Shami, Matthew Wade and the likes.

Vikram Solanki, Gujarat's director of cricket, said in a statement, "We've seen him mature not only as a batter but also as a leader in cricket," he added. "His contribution on the field has helped Gujarat Titans emerge as a formidable force...His maturity and skill are evident in his on-field performance and we are extremely excited to embark on a new journey with a young leader like Shubman at the helm."

On Hardik's switch to his previous franchise MI, Solanki said, "He has expressed a desire to return to his original team Mumbai Indians."

"We respect his decision and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours."

Gill has raised his stature while playing for the Gujarat franchise since their admission in IPL 2022. The right-hander has amassed 1,373 runs in two seasons for Gujarat, after joining them post his stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In 2023, the youngster ended with 890 runs -- most by any -- including three hundreds and four half-centuries. It will be interesting to see how Gill responds to the added responsibility in the upcoming season.
