IPL 2024: Fans accuse MI dugout of helping SKY to take DRS call for a wide ball

A win over Punjab Kings for Mumbai Indians saw the touring side coming under the radar for an uncalled-for controversy during the tie in Mullanpur in IPL 2024 on Thursday (April 18). During the 15th over in Mumbai’s innings, an umpire’s callwas challengedthrough the dressing room, with MI head coach Mark Boucher and all-rounder Tim David urging Suryakumar Yadav to take a DRS call for a wide ball.

A wider yorker by Arshdeep off the second-last ball was not given wide by the on-field umpire, and soon after, Boucher and David indicated the batter to review it immediately, to which Punjab’s stand-in captain Sam Curran even complained to the official. However, by then, MI had taken a review, and the callwas overturnedfollowing the replay.

The third umpire, Nitin Menon, was under pressure during the game as he had to look into some tight calls, overturning the said one being one of them.

Meanwhile, the fans on social media lashed out at this tactic from the MI camp, accusing SKY of taking the review only after getting an indication from the dressing room.

SKY stars in Mullanpur as MI win

Suryakumar Yadav is peaking after rare failures this season, completing his second fifty in four matches. SKY hit 78 off 53 balls, hitting three sixes and seven fours, helping MI put up a fighting total of 192 for seven in the first innings.

Mumbai was on the top after reducing Punjab to 14 for four at one stage and 77 for six later. With Punjab’s back against the wall, they needed heroic efforts to bail them out, and Ashutosh Sharma and Shashank Singh delivered for the home team.

While Shashank began with the onslaught, hitting 41 off 25 balls, Ashutosh made headlines for his stupendous outing, whacking 68 in just 21 balls, hitting seven massive sixes and two fours. Although he got PBKS in the touching distance of a big win over Mumbai Indians, he failed to get the job done.

For the touring side, seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee picked three wickets each, with Bumrah’s dismissal of Rilee Rossouw being the highlight of the evening.

With the win, Mumbai has climbed to the seventh spot, while Punjab slipped to ninth, with five losses and two wins thus far.
