Former Australia great and Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has made a huge claim on India’s star prospect and Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav and the potential impact he could have at the ODI World Cup later this year. According to Ponting, Surya can win India the World Cup, despite having been out for three golden ducks in the recently concluded ODI series. The India batter will look to return to form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), where MI lost their opening match to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
"Everyone around the world knows what Surya [Suryakumar] can do in white-ball cricket. They should stick with him, I feel," Ponting told the ICC Review.
"Because he is I think the kind of player that can win you a World Cup.
"He might be a little bit inconsistent but he's the sort of guy who in big moments can win you something," Ponting said.
The former Aussie captain drew Surya’s comparison with late all-rounder Andrew Symonds, who tragically lost his life in 2022. According to Ponting, Surya is playing a similar role to that of his former teammate.

"When you invest in these guys, you give them an opportunity, you give them a pretty clear direction and get some clarity around the role you want them to play, they've got so much talent that they can single-handedly win you games.
Talking on the prospect of match-winning players, Ponting reckons India should use all the players at their disposal. The Indian team will have the privilege of using Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, with the latter still nursing an injury.
"That's definitely the way that I'd look at it for India. I wouldn't be playing it safe, I'd be going with match-winning players and I think he's a match-winner," he said.
Suryakumar, in 21 ODI innings, has scored 433 runs at an average of 24.05 with two half-centuries but was dismissed for three consecutive ducks in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia. He will next take the field on Saturday, April 8 against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and will look to return to form.
