In 1998, he won theLok Sabha seat from Tiruchengode(Thiru-chen-goad).A known Jaya loyalist, he stood by her when the party split post-MGR's death in the 80s. He was always an important member of the Jayalaathiaa cabinet, he was the public works, highways and minor ports minister in her cabinet.
