SCO Summit 2025 Highlights: Xi Jinping vowed support to India’s fight against terror

Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of terrorism and sought Chinese support to fight the menace. Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed its support in that direction, the government said in a statement.

During their bilateral talks on Sunday, PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping also discussed the current international situation. They deliberated on the challenges posed by Trump tariffs, but their conversation largely remained around bilateral issues, the External Affairs Ministry added.

The Indian external affairs ministry also shared in the media briefing in Tianjin on Sunday that there was a proposal from the Chinese side to hold a banquet for PM Narendra Modi to show how important India is and to highlight Modi’s visit after 7 years, but there was a scheduling conflict.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on a mutually acceptable boundary solution between the two nations. They also exchanged views on balancing trade, people-to-people ties, and fighting terrorism, the External Affairs Ministry said in the special briefing.

During the bilateral meeting, Xi Jinping put forward four suggestions to strengthen common interests, all of which were positively received by PM Modi.

PM Modi stressed the need for peace and tranquillity along the border as the foundation for continued bilateral ties. Both leaders agreed that differences should not escalate into disputes, underlining that a stable and amicable relationship would benefit the people of both nations.

They further emphasised that India and China, as major Asian powers, should cooperate and allow each other to grow, if the idea of an "Asian Century" is to be realised.

In a special briefing, the External Affairs Ministry said that PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping shared their perspectives on growth and development and spoke about their understanding of bilateral relations. which will help guide future aspects of relationships. Both agreed to focus on growth and an amicable relationship, which will benefit 2.8 billion people as common interests outweigh the differences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedow at Tianjin, China, and said in a post on X, “Exchanged perspectives on diverse issues with Mr. Serdar Berdimuhamedow, President of Turkmenistan, during our conversation in Tianjin earlier this evening.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Kazakhstan President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev, and shared a picture on X with a tweet saying, “Productive exchange of views with President Tokayev of Kazakhstan. Our nations are working closely in many key sectors, including energy, security, healthcare and pharma.”

PM Narendra Modi met several leaders, including Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, and Egypt PM Mostafa Madbouly, at the official reception of the SCO Summit and shared pictures on his X handle.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission of Myanmar, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin.
The Prime Minister said that India attaches importance to its ties with Myanmar as part of its Neighbourhood First, Act East, and Indo-Pacific policies. The two leaders reviewed bilateral ties and discussed the way forward on several aspects of bilateral cooperation, including development partnership, defence and security, border management, and border trade issues.

In his opening remarks at delegation-level talks with PM Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping used the “dragon and elephant” metaphor, and said that as ancient, populous nations and Global South leaders, China and India need to work together as friends and good neighbours.

“The World is going towards transformation. China and India are two of the most civilisational countries. We are the world’s two most populous countries and part of the Global South... It is vital to be friends, a good neighbour, and the Dragon and the Elephant to come together...,” he said.

After his meeting with the Chinese President Xi Jinping, Modi took to X to write,  “Had a fruitful meeting with President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. We reviewed the positive momentum in India-China relations since our last meeting in Kazan. We agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility in border areas and reaffirmed our commitment to cooperation based on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity.”

Ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed cooperation between Russia and China. In an interview with Xinhua published on Saturday, Putin expressed his eagerness to hold a discussion with Chinese President Xi Jinping on "all aspects" of Russia's bilateral agenda.

"I look forward to in-depth discussions with President Xi Jinping on all aspects of our bilateral agenda, including political and security cooperation, as well as economic, cultural and humanitarian ties. And, as always, we will exchange views on pressing regional and international issues," Putin told the Chinese state news agency.

After noting the "unprecedented" growth in trade between Russia and China, Putin said that the bilateral trade with Moscow's leading partner has grown by around USD 100 billion since 2021.

"In terms of trade volume, China is by far Russia's leading partner, while last year Russia ranked fifth among China's foreign trade partners," Putin told Xinhua news agency, adding that transactions between Russia and China are almost completely carried out in rubles and yuan.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has reached Tianjin for the 2025 SCO Summit.

This year's summit is a landmark event for the organisation, marking the fifth time China has hosted it and making it the largest gathering since the SCO's founding. Over 20 world leaders and 10 heads of international organisations will attend this historical summit.

In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Russian President Vladimir Putin slammed “discriminatory sanctions” and asserted that Moscow and Beijing are "united in strengthening" the BRICS grouping to address global issues. Ahead of the upcoming 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit taking place in the Tianjin municipality of China, the Russian President underlined the deepening cooperation between the two nations within multilateral platforms.

"We are working closely with China within BRICS to expand its role as a key pillar of global architecture. Together, we advance initiatives aimed at expanding economic opportunities for member states, including the creation of common platforms for partnership in strategic sectors," Putin said, as quoted by Xinhua News Agency.
"We stand united in strengthening BRICS' ability to address pressing global challenges, share similar views on regional and international security, and take a common stand against discriminatory sanctions that hinder the socioeconomic development of our members and the world at large," he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin on Sunday to attend a summit hosted by counterpart Xi Jinping with around 20 other world leaders.

This trip will be PM Modi's first visit to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes. It comes as India and China, in recent days, have made moves to improve their relationship, like restarting trade via the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.
 

China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, extended a warm welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he arrived in Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on Saturday. In a post on X, the ambassador expressed his belief that this visit will "inject new momentum into China-India relations."
