<p>"Why are they doing it now?" he said.</p>

<p>Tendulkar said the Congress was "dreaming: about forming the government in the coastal state, but their "dream" will not be fulfilled.</p>

<p>"The BJP had staked the claim to form government successfully (in 2017), as the party had the majority with more than 21 (MLAs) supporting it," he said, adding that the Congress move was just a "stunt".</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), one of the constituents of the BJP-led NDA government, dared the Congress to parade all the 16 MLAs of the party in public before meeting the governor.</p>

<p>MGP chief Dipak Dhavalikar said the Congress had already missed the bus and was trying in vain to gain power.</p>

<p>"Do they have 16 MLAs with them? They should parade them before people before going to meet the governor," he said.</p>

<p>Dhavlikar said it would be a different matter altogether if the Congress had to stake claim for power in case the incumbent government runs into minority.</p>

<p>The BJP has won 5,636 seats and is leading in 21 seats, they said.</p>

<p>According to a senior state BJP leader, it was the first time in last 10 years that the party had been elected to the gram panchayat level in every district of the state.</p>

<p>The CPI(M) slipped to the third position from the second place it had occupied in the last panchayat polls in 2013. It won 1,461 gram panchayat seats and was ahead in another 10, the sources said.</p>

<p>The Congress is at the fourth position by winning 1,033 seats and leading in 10 - a score lower than that of even Independents, who won 1,794 gram panchayat seats and were leading in 18 seats.</p>

<p>A jubilant TMC said the result would boost the party ahead of next year's Lok Sabha election as the rural poll was the last major electoral event in the state before it.</p>

<p>The BJP said the result in the panchayat polls, which saw its emergence as the main challenger to the ruling TMC in Bengal, would act as a morale booster for the party's rank and file.</p>

<p>In Purulia, the TMC and BJP had a close fight in the gram panchayats, winning 836 and 644 seats, respectively. The Congress and the CPI(M) bagged 154 and 150 seats, respectively, the sources said.</p>

<p>In Jhargram too, the TMC and the BJP were engaged in a close battle for the gram panchayat seats, winning 372 and 329 seats respectively. The CPI(M) trailed far behind with 13 seats and the Congress was yet to open its account.</p>

<p>In the traditional Congress stronghold of Malda, the TMC won 973 gram panchayat seats, the BJP 502, the Congress 359 and CPI(M) 101 seats.</p>

<p>The TMC bagged 918 seats, followed by the Congress with 359 seats in Murshidabad. The CPI(M) and the BJP bagged 111 and 54 seats, respectively in the district, the SEC said.</p>

<p>In Nadia, another border district like Murshidabad and Malda, the TMC won 1,612 gram panchayat seats, the BJP 637, the CPI(M) 177 and the Congress 60 seats.</p>

<p>In East Midnapore, the TMC won 2,033 gram panchayat seats, the BJP 188, the CPI(M) 135 and the Congress 15 seats</p>

<p>In Jalpaiguri, the TMC won 806 gram panchayat seats, the BJP 308, the CPI(M) 51 and the Congress 20 seats</p>

<p>In South 24 Parganas, the TMC bagged 2,105 gram panchayat seats, followed by BJP with 404, CPI(M) with 161 and the Congress with 34.</p>

<p>TMC leader Arabul Islam, who was arrested on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's directive last week after the murder of an Independent candidate at Bhangar of South 24-Parganas and is presently in jail, has won the panchayat samiti seat from the area.</p>

<p>Some incidents of violence were reported from some of the counting centers of the state where miscreants allegedly ran away with ballot boxes.</p>

<p>"We have taken appropriate action in all the cases," said a SEC official.</p>

<p>The panchayat poll was held in 621 Zila Parishad, 6,123 panchayat Samiti and 31,802 gram panchayat seats in 20 West Bengal districts on May 14.</p>

<p>Of the total 48,650 seats in gram panchayats, 16,814 went uncontested. There was also no contest for 3,059 of the 9,217 panchayat Samiti seats and in 203 of the 825 Zila Parishad seats.</p>

<p>"Despite so much violence, we have won more than 5,000 seats in GP (gram panchayat). Had the elections been free and fair, we would have won 50 per cent seats at all the three levels of the panchayat," state BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu said.</p>

<p>Widespread violence during the polls claimed at least 12 lives and left 43 injured. The CPI(M) and the Congress dubbed the election a "farce".</p>

<p>The TMC, on the other hand, said the people of Bengal had voted in favour of development ushered in by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.</p>

Had the elections been free and fair, we would have won 50 per cent seats at all the three levels of the panchayat," state BJP general secretary Sayantan Basu said. <p>The Trinamool Congress today accused the BJP of instigating unrest in West Bengal during the May 14 panchayat elections to create a situation favourable for imposing President's rule.</p>

<p>But the people of the state gave the BJP a befitting reply with their verdict in favour of the ruling Trinamool Congress and its chief Mamata Banerjee, party's Secretary General Partha Chatterjee said.</p>

<p>Widespread violence during the single-phase panchayat polls had claimed at least 12 lives and left 43 injured.</p>

<p>"The BJP wanted to foment trouble during the panchayat polls in the state to create a situation favourable for imposing President's rule here. But it failed to achieve the target," Chatterjee, also a senior minister, said.</p>

<p>Almost 80 per cent of the seats in the three-tier panchayat system went to the Trinamool Congress, he said, adding that none of the BJP, the CPI(M) or the Congress had the power to create such a situation in the state.</p>

<p>Taking a dig at the CPI(M) and the Congress, he said both the opposition parties provided oxygen to the BJP in this election.</p>

<p>"The Congress handed over its flag to the BJP, while workers from both the CPI(M) and the Congress joined the saffron party. It is most unfortunate," he said.</p>

<p>"This election has exposed the BJP's understanding with the CPI(M) and the Congress. I feel pity for the two parties. They have been reduced to ordinary parties securing only third and fourth positions respectively," Chatterjee said.</p>

<p>He said the massive mandate had enhanced the TMC's responsibility and "peace has to be maintained to take forward the development process".</p>

<p>On the BJP faring comparatively better in Purulia and Jhargram districts, Chatterjee said, "We are examining the results of both the districts bordering Jharkhand."</p>

Karnataka effect: Sensex closes 300 points down

<p>The Supreme Court today asked the Yeddyurappa-led BJP government to conduct a floor test on Saturday to prove their majority in the Karnataka assembly.</p>

<p>The top court was hearing a <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/supreme-court-to-hear-plea-challenging-invitation-to-yeddyurappa-to-be-chief-minister-137831">petition challenging</a> Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala's invitation to BS Yeddyurappa to become chief minister.</p>

<p>The floor test will take place at 4 pm tomorrow. The Supreme Court also said that oath should be administered to all MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly) before the floor test tomorrow and BS Yeddyurappa cannot take any policy decisions until tomorrow.</p>

<p>"The test will be as per the rules of the house. There will be no secret ballot," the Supreme Court justices said.</p>

<p>Lawyers for BS Yeddyurappa had requested until Monday to be able to prove it has the numbers to form a government. They had also wanted a secret ballot.</p>

<p>The Supreme Court said that the governor had to see which side had the numbers to form the government on the face of a claim of majority support by the&nbsp;single largest party and on the other a written support of majority to the Cong-JDS combine.</p>

<p>Justice Sikri said the best course was for a floor test. "Let there be a floor test and let the House decide," said the Supreme Court judge.</p>

<p>The Congress party said in the top court that there should be videography and proper security to MLAs to enable them vote fearlessly. The Supreme Court said that it would order the Director General of Police to make proper arrangement for floor test on Saturday.<br />

The Supreme Court began the hearing by asking the counsel for letters of support given by BS Yeddyurappa&nbsp;to the governor. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who was representing the BJP-led central government handed over Yeddyurappa's letters to the top court.</p>

<p>Yeddyurappa's letter stated that he had been elected as leader of the largest party, the BJP and that he had the support of the necessary number of lawmakers and was ready to prove it on the floor of House.</p>

<p>The top court observed that BS Yeddyurappa's letter of support did&nbsp;not mention the names of the MLAs who had offered their support.</p>

<p>In the May 12 polls, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 104 members, while Congress secured 78, the JD(S) 37 and others three.</p>

<p>The BJP insists it should stake claim to form the government by virtue of being the single largest party while the Congress, which has struck a post-poll alliance with the JD(S), says they have more seats, four more than the half-way mark.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When the PM does not say anything in the Unnao case, in the Rohit Vemula case and when the Dalits are attacked, then they (accused) feel what they were doing is right. A PM gives direction to the country, while a CM does so in case of a state," Gandhi said.</p>

<p>He said if the Congress was voted to power in Chhattisgarh, then those who commit crimes against women and Dalits would be strictly punished and jailed.</p>

<p>"If anyone breaks the law of the land, stern action will be taken against them," he said.</p>

<p>Gandhi's two-day tour of Chhattisgarh, where Assembly elections are due later this year, started yesterday.&nbsp</p>

'Divisive' BJP making people fight among themselves: Rahul Gandhi

<p>A group of Congress workers today assembled outside the home of Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala here and shouted slogans against him following which 30 of them were detained, the police said.</p>

<p>They were protesting against Vala's decision to invite the BJP to form the government in Karnataka despite the saffron party's numbers being less than the combined tally of the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) in the state Assembly.</p>

<p>Congress city unit chief Mahesh Rajput, who led the protest outside Vala's Nutan Nagar society residence near Kalavad Road here, called the Karnataka governor's act a "blot on democracy"</p>

<p>"Despite being the governor of a state, Vala has acted like a BJP worker," Rajput alleged.</p>

<p>Deputy Commissioner of Police Harshad Mehta said, "We have detained 30 Congress workers from outside the residence of the Karnataka governor. No member of Vala's family was at home when the protest and sloganeering took place."</p>

<p>Protests by the Congress against Vala's decision were also held at Ahmedabad and Vadodara.&nbsp;</p>

Karnataka Governor appoints BJP MLA Bopaiah as pro-tem Speaker, Congress cries foul

<p>Indian officials told PTI that 4 civilians and a BSF soldier was killed and 12 injured as Pakistani Rangers opened fire on villages in Jammu area today.</p>

<p>Earlier on Friday, a BSF soldier and four civilians lost their lives during firing along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. Pak troops had opened fire in RS Pura and Arnia sectors. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The soldier killed in the violation hailed from Jharkhand.</p>

<p>Pakistan said the Indian envoy was informed that the "deliberate targeting of civilian populated areas is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity, international human rights and humanitarian laws".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation," Pakistan's foreign office added. &nbsp;</p>

Pakistan summons Indian High Commissioner over 'unprovoked ceasefire violations' along LoC

<p>The Supreme Court on Friday allowed Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, to travel to offshore locations in United Kingdom, Germany and Spain with certain conditions, including that he would not open or close a bank account abroad.</p>

<p>Karti, who has been facing probe in various corruption cases, was allowed to go abroad from May 19 to 27 by a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra.</p>

<p>The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said "he (Karti) shall not open or close any overseas bank account" and not enter into any property transaction abroad.&nbsp</p>

<p>It asked Karti to furnish an undertaking before it, saying he would follow the conditions and apprise it about the flight details and date of arrival back to India.</p>

<p>The court also made it clear that its permission to Karti to travel abroad should not be used in any court of law for grant of statutory and regular bail in any other offence.</p>

<p>The bench told Karti that he would cooperate in investigation and hand over passport to investigation agency, that is the Enforcement Directorate, on return.</p>

<p>The Supreme Court had raised the 270 tmcft share of Cauvery water for Karnataka by 14.75 tmcft and reduced Tamil Nadu's share, while compensating it by allowing extraction of 10 tmcft groundwater from the river basin.</p>

Jammu and Kashmir: 1 BSF soldier, 4 civilians killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan

<p>Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav and other alliance leaders met with the Bihar Governor Satyapal Malik today&nbspto prove their majority in&nbspthe state assembly.&nbsp</p>

RJD, alliance parties meet Bihar governor, submit letter proving majority

<p>Kangana Ranaut and Jim Sarbh who were seen hanging out together during the Cannes Film Festival in France are now caught up in the middle of a backlash as a video of them making light of the word ‘rape’ while narrating an incident has gone viral.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a video shared by an Instagram user as part of a story showed Jim Sarbh of the fame <em>Padmaavat </em>narrating an incident while Kangana who stands beside him laughs at the joke along with the crowd in what looks like a pub.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jim Sarbh can be heard saying, “I’d rather be raped by 12 prostitutes than touch alcohol and the Punjabi says ‘Me too, I didn’t know that was an option.’”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Twitterati accused&nbsp;Kangana to be a hypocrite as she was one of the first few people who had earlier protested against Salman Khan’s <em>Sultan</em> rape comment during a press conference while she kept laughing to the rape joke that Jim cracked herself recently.</p>

In a video that surfaced on social media, Jim Sarbh made light of the word 'rape;' while narrating a play and Kangana was seen laughing with him

Kangana Ranaut and Jim Sarbh who were seen hanging out together during the Cannes Film Festival in France are now caught up in the middle of a backlash as a video of them making light of the word ‘rape’ while narrating an incident has gone viral. In a video shared by an Instagram user as part of a story showed Jim Sarbh of the fame Padmaavat narrating an incident while Kangana who stands beside him laughs at the joke along with the crowd in what looks like a pub. Jim Sarbh can be heard saying, “I’d rather be raped by 12 prostitutes than touch alcohol and the Punjabi says ‘Me too, I didn’t know that was an option.’” The Twitterati accused Kangana to be a hypocrite as she was one of the first few people who had earlier protested against Salman Khan’s Sultan rape comment during a press conference while she kept laughing to the rape joke that Jim cracked herself recently. It is unfortunate that my comments were taken out of context. Twitter lashes at Kangana Ranaut, Jim Sarbh over a rape 'joke' in Cannes

<p>Targetting the Bhartiya Janata Party over forming a government in Karnataka after winning the highest number of seats in the state, the Congress has now decided to stake a claim&nbsp;in Goa.</p>

<p>13 Congress MLAs of the Congress party met with the Goa governor Mridula Sinha at Raj Bhavan today demanding an invitation from the governor for forming a government in the state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The MLAs handed over a memorandum to the governor saying Congress is the largest party in the state.</p>

<p>The Congress holds that as the BJP was invited to&nbsp;form the&nbsp;government&nbsp;in Karnataka&nbsp;by virtue of&nbsp;its majority seats, the Goa governor should invite them to form the government as they had won the majority&nbsp;of seats in the state during the legislative elections in 2017.</p>

<p>Congress spokesperson Yatish Naika had said yesterday,&nbsp;''In 2017, we won 17 seats and were the single largest party and continue to be but Governor chose to invite the BJP which had 13 seats. In Karnataka, Governor invited BJP as they are the single largest party. So, we appeal to Governor to invite us to form govt".</p>

<p>Congress spokesperson had also said that they were ready to prove their majority in the state.</p>

<p>In February 2017 assembly poll, Congress had emerged as the single-largest party but had failed to form the government after the BJP, with 13 MLAs, swiftly bagged support of Goa Forward Party (GFP), Maharastrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and two Independents, to reach the magic figure of 21 in the 40-member house.</p>

<p>Following this, Manohar Parrikar, who was then serving as the defence minister was rushed back to Goa to return as the Chief Minister.</p>

<p>Goa Congress said that the state is without a leader for two months and added that state administration is in chaos. &nbsp;</p>
