Video | Authorities on high alert after grenade blast in Chandigarh, suspect caught in CCTV

A grenade attack took place in the Indian Union Territory of Chandigarh on Wednesday (Sep 11), targeting a house in the upscale Sector 10 area of the city.

CCTV footage showed a man, in white T-shirt, running away from the home and seconds later, an explosion rocked the place. The man reportedly ran away in an auto, which left the scene immediately after the grenade attack. The auto narrowly avoided collision with a car as it took a sharp U-turn.

Following the explosion, teams from Chandigarh Police and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) arrived at the scene to collect evidence and remains of the explosive device. Experts from India’s anti-terror agency NIA (National Investigation Agency) also arrived on the spot.

"There was a loud sound. Some pressure type low-intensity blast took place because of which some windows and pots were damaged," Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur was quoted as saying by news agency NDTV.

"The complainants were sitting on their verandah of the house. They saw the suspects," the police officer said. Police were trying to trace the vehicle.

Following the incident, authorities in neighbouring Mohali were put on high alert as the auto-rickshaw possibly went towards that district only.

In an urgent message, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mohali briefed the field officers about the suspicious grenade blast and directed them to be vigilant.
