Uttarakhand nurse raped, robbed and killed on way to home; accused arrested
Police arrested the man from neighbouring Rajasthan state
Amid nationwide uproar over the Kolkata rape and murder case, details have emerged about the alleged rape and murder of a 33-year-old nurse in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. The incident took place in the Udham Singh Nagar district around two weeks ago when the victim, a nurse, was returning from hospital. Police arrested the suspect on Wednesday (Aug 14).
The victim'sdead body was found in an empty plot in the district. She was allegedly raped and killed on July 30.
The accused has been identified as Dharmendra Kumar from Bareilly and is a daily wage labourer.
The victim’s sister filed a complaint with the police the next day when she didn’t return home. Police were able to recover the dead body on Aug 8.
Horrifying details
According to media reports, the accused first dragged the victim to bushes and raped her. And then, he strangled her to death. Later, he stripped the woman of her jewellery and ran away.
Police arrested the man from neighbouring Rajasthan state after he was traced down using the victim’s phone.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath was quoted as saying by Indian Express, “The accused is a (drug) addict and does not know the woman. On the day of the incident, he saw the woman going alone. As per our information, he stopped the woman, who fought back fiercely. She was, however, overpowered and… strangledto death. He also sexually assaulted her. After the murder, he took the woman’s belongings and escaped.”
The accused was later interrogated, where he revealed that he attacked the nurse inside the Basundhara Apartment at Kashipur Road with the intention of robbery.
The incident comes as the healthcare community of the country is shocked by the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the premises of the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9 and protests have broken out across the nation.
