IMD data shows India received 11% less rainfall than average in June

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released data indicating that India received below-normal rainfall in the month of June, with an 11 per cent deficit, affecting several regions except the southern part of the country.

In terms of state-wise distribution, IMD's data reveals that 17 states reported a rainfall deficit while 19 states received normal or above-normal rainfall in June.

Forecast and precautions:

IMD has forecasted rainfall across most regions in the coming five days, including Delhi, which recently experienced severe disruptions due to heavy showers. The weather department anticipates heavy rains continuing till Tuesday and has mobilised civic agencies to address potential waterlogging and related issues.

Regional breakdown of deficits:

According to IMD figures, the central, north-western and north-eastern regions faced significant rainfall deficits of 14%, 33%, and 13% respectively last month. The south, on the other hand, saw an abundance of rain over that same time, with a significant 14% above average.

IMD officials have identified cyclonic circulations over East Jharkhand, North Assam and Central Madhya Pradesh, along with two troughs extending from the Arabian Sea to Northwest Bihar and from North Assam to North Odisha. These systems have revitalised the monsoon over northern and eastern India.

Looking ahead, the weather department forecasts isolated heavy rainfall in states including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan from June 30 to July 3. As of Saturday, the monsoon has progressed into additional parts of east Uttar Pradesh and certain areas of West Uttar Pradesh.

Favourable conditions are expected for further advancement into more parts of west Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab and the remaining areas of west Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu over the next two to three days.

Assam and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal andSikkim, East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Gangetic West Bengal, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan andGoa, Tamil Nadu, Coastal andSouth Interior Karnataka, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh andYanam all received various levels of rainfall, ranging from heavy to very heavy, on Saturday.
