Newly wed actress Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty take oath as Lok Sabha members

Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty took oath as members of Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

After a fairytale wedding in Turkey last week, Bengali actress- turned-politician Nusrat Jahan took oath in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Nusrat, along with fellow actress-MP Mimi Chakraborty took oath in their native language, Bangla.

The oath was administered as soon as the lower house met for the day. The duo followed their oath with phrases 'Vande Mataram', 'Jai Hind' and 'Jai Bangla'. After taking their oath, both Nusrat and Mimi walked up to the speaker’s chair and touched Om Birla’s feet.

Nusrat and Mimi – who are both members of Trinamool Congress Party- had skipped oath-taking earlier as the former was in Turkey for her wedding to Kolkata-based businessman Nikhil Jain. Mimi had also attended the wedding that took place on June 19.

New bride Nusrat glowed in a white and pin saree as she walked up to the podium to take the oath. She sported red vermillion on her forehead and wore red bangles- things that newly married Hindu brides in India wear soon after their wedding. Her colleague and friend Mimi was also dressed in white traditional attire. As they stepped out of the Parliament, they both were swarmed by media who was present at the premise. While the two initially cooperated with the media and answered all the questions they had, after a point Mimi asked the media people to move aside so that they could leave.

As the two made their way to their vehicle, the media reporters requested them for a photo together. While they did pose for the cameras, both the actors asked them to stand in a line at a reasonable distance and click the pictures.

A month earlier, the two were brutally trolled on social media for posting for pictures outside the Parliament. Some raised objection for their choice of attire- they both were dressed in western clothes. While they were trolled by a certain section, there were others who spoke in support of the two new politicians.

Both Nusrat and Mimi are popular actors in Bengali cinema.
