Catherine O’Hara has left Hollywood mourning after she passed away at the age of 71 on Friday, January 30, 2026. The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress is known for several memorable performances, including in Home Alone, Schitt’s Creek, and Beetlejuice. She took her last breath at her Los Angeles home following a brief illness.

Social media is flooded with tributes

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by O’Hara's manager, and social media is flooded with tributes from Hollywood celebrities as well as fans. With a career over five decades, she has left her mark across sketch comedy, film, and television. The actress is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their sons, Matthew and Luke.

Macaulay Culkin shares an emotional post

A whole generation loved her as Kate McCallister, the mother in the Home Alone films, and Macaulay Culkin, who played her on-screen son Kevin McCallister in the 1990 Christmas classic, shared an emotional post. Taking to Instagram, he posted a collage and wrote, “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

Hollywood remembers O’Hara

Joe Pesci, her other Home Alone co-star, said in a statement to USA Today, "She was a great actress, and she will be missed. God bless, rest in peace." While Schitt’s Creek co-creator and star Dan Levy called her "extended family," adding, "It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her."

Seth Rogen, who worked with her on Apple TV+’s The Studio, said, "Really don't know what to say. I told O'Hara when I first met her I thought she was the funniest person I'd ever had the pleasure of watching on screen. 'Home Alone' was the movie that made me want to make movies. Getting to work with her was a true honor."

Pedro Pascal, her co-star on The Last of Us Season 2, shared, "Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always. Always."

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called her a national legend, while SCTV alum Andrea Martin praised her as "the greatest."

The actress remained active on her professional front till the end. Her last screen work featured a key role in The Studio and a guest appearance in The Last of Us Season 2. She was also seen in the 2025 documentary John Candy: I Like Me.
