Farhan Akhtar is reportedly in talks to join Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming period sports drama based on the life of legendary cricketer Lala Amarnath. Amid the ongoing buzz, it has been learned that the actor will play the role of a Pakistani cricketer.
Director-actor Farhan Akhtar is currently dominating headlines due to his much-publicised fallout with Ranveer Singh over Don 3. Amid all, it has been reported that the actor is working on his next acting project with none other than Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming period sports drama.
If reports are to be believed, Akhtar will be playing the role of a Pakistani cricketer in the movie, which is set against the backdrop of India’s partition and will chronicle the life of Lala Amarnath, independent India’s first cricket captain.

According to a report in Mid-Day, Akhtar will be attached to the project as both an actor and a producer. However, he will not have a full-fledged role, but a cameo appearance. A source told mid-day that he is likely to play the role of a celebrated Pakistani cricketer in the movie that will be set against the backdrop of the partition.
“Even though it’s an extended cameo, Farhan’s role is emotionally pivotal to the narrative. He plays Lala Amarnath’s close friend, who remains in Pakistan after the Partition. The film isn’t just about cricket; it’s about friendship during one of the most turbulent moments in the subcontinent’s history. Ashutosh has asked Farhan to consider the role, but it’s not locked yet,” shared a source.

According to sources, the emotional core of the story lies in the bond between Lala Amarnath and his close friend, who chooses to stay in Pakistan after the partition. So, the movie will be beyond cricket and will also focus on friendship amid the turbulent times of partition. If this news is confirmed, then this would mark Farhan’s return to the sports biopic genre after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. It also reunites him with Gowariker after their acclaimed collaboration on Lakshya in 2004. Neither Akhtar nor the makers have officially confirmed anything in the news.
No announcement has been made on the project as well.

He's reportedly set to play the role of a lead role, reportedly Lala Amarnath, the father figure of Indian cricket. Earlier, Pinkvilla reported that the movie is “produced by Aamir Khan along with Excel Entertainment and Rajkumar Hirani, and is expected to go on floors around October 2026 with a start-to-finish schedule."
