Cuban artist El Taiger dies a week after getting shot in head, confirms family

Cuban reggaeton singer José Manuel Carbajal Zaldívar aka El Taiger has died at the age of 37. He passed away on Thursday in Miami after getting shot in the head a week ago. His family confirmed the news in a statement shared on his official Instagram account.

The shooting happened on October 3 around 7 am. The police found El Taiger inside a black Mercedes SUV with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center where he was put on life support. Unfortunately, he passed away from his injuries.

In the official statement, the family said, “From the moment of his arrival, a team of physicians at Jackson Memorial worked tirelessly to provide him with the care he needed. We are extremely grateful. During this incredibly difficult time, family, friends and supporters joined together in prayer, hope and support, seeking a miracle. To all who offered their prayers, we thank you."

They added, “Sadly, this afternoon, El Taiger was pronounced dead and is now reunited with his beloved mother in heaven.”

“While this news is both shocking and heartbreaking, we encourage fans of El Taiger to honor his memory by celebrating the joy he brought to so many,” the statement further read. “Turn up your music, dance and celebrate his life. El Taiger was the sentiment of the people, and now we must keep that sentiment alive through his music and his legacy.”

The police are still investigating the case, however, it is unclear whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. Miami police spokesperson Mike Vega said they haven't confirmed if it was self-inflicted. El Taiger’s manager Macel Reinosa mentioned that a person who knew him called 911 after the shooting and they don't believe it was suicide based on the evidence.

El Taiger was known for blending reggaeton with Cuban rhythms in a genre called Cubaton. He gained international attention after releasing his first album Taiger in 2016.
