Veteran actor Anant Nag, who is known for his work in Kannada cinema, has been conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024. Apart from his work in Kannada films, he has worked in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, and Malayalam movies.
Veteran actor Anant Nag will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024 for his contribution to Indian cinema. He will be presented with the highest honour in Indian cinema at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony on Sept 22, 2026, in Kevadia, Gujarat.
With his vast contribution to filmography, Nag is known for his immense contribution to Kannada cinema, but he has also contributed a lot to other languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, and Malayalam films.

On Wednesday, the announcement was made by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). Sharing the announcement, they wrote, “On the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, the Government of India is pleased to announce that the Actor will be conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2024 for his contribution to Indian cinema and an illustrious cinematic journey that has inspired generations.”

Re-sharing the post on his X handle, PM Modi wrote,''Congratulations to the legendary Anant Nag Ji on being conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. For several decades, his effortless performances, remarkable versatility and brilliance have left a very strong mark on Indian cinema, particularly Kannada cinema. In whichever role he has played, he brought rare depth and authenticity. This is indeed a richly deserved honour for a truly distinguished artist.''
Known and hailed for his naturalistic and understated performances, Nag was a major face of the parallel cinema movement of Indian cinema. A versatile actor known for his naturalistic and understated performances, he collaborated with Shyam Benegal and has given landmark movies like Ankur, Nishant, and Manthan.
Nad made his feature film debut in 1973 with Sankalpa. While he has featured in several movie that defined parallel cinema moment, but he also did commercially successful Kannada films such as Bayalu Daari (1976), Kanneshwara Rama (1977), Benkiya Bale (1983), Hendthige Helbedi (1989), Ganeshana Maduve (1990), Gowri Ganesha (1991), Mungaru Male (2006), Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu (2016), Raajakumara (2017), Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale, Kasaragodu. In 2025, Anant was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award.
