American Idol star and Grammy winner Mandisa found dead at home; police probe underway

Mandisa, a gospel singer who shot to fame after participating in American Idol, was found dead at her apartment on Thursday evening. She was 47.

Mandisa participated in season 5 of the reality TV singing competition. It aired in 2006. A year after her TV stint, she released her first full-length album, True Beauty. It earned her a Grammy nomination for best pop/contemporary gospel album.

In 2010, she was nominated for the same award for her album, Freedom. The singer even bagged a Grammy nomination for best contemporary Christian music album for What If We Were Real in 2012.

In 2014, she finally bagged her first Grammy for her album, Overcomer, in the best contemporary Christian music album category.

Mandisa's father, John Hundley, confirmed the news of her death to Fox News Digital. However, it's still unclear what caused the singer's death.

Franklin Police Department Public Information manager Max Wintz told the publicationthat authorities are "conducting an active death investigation stemming from a body that was discovered Thursday evening at a residence."

Mandisa has often opened up about her struggles with depression. In 2017, she released her last album, Out of the Dark, which was inspired by her friends who helped her get out of deep depression at the lowest phase of her life. In 2022, she released a memoir titled Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God's Joy.
