A Delhi court on Tuesday sent Sushen Mohan Gupta, alleged defence agent arrested by the agency in the Rs 3,600-crore VVIP choppers scam, to four-day ED custody.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which produced Mr Gupta before Special judge Arvind Kumar, had sought his custody for 14 days.

Mr Gupta was arrested by the agency under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The ED officials said Mr Gupta’s role in the case came to light on the basis of disclosures made by Rajiv Saxena, who has turned approver in the case after he was deported from the UAE and arrested by the agency in New Delhi.

It is suspected that Mr Gupta has in his possession some payment details in the purchase of AgustaWestland VVIP choppers and the link is to be unravelled, they said.

Reflecting the bearish mood, all the sectoral indices, led by realty, metal and auto, were trading in the negative zone with losses of up to 1.57 per cent.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell 103.90 points, or 0.78 per cent, to 11,353 after hitting a low of 11,342.90.

Brokers said, besides profit-booking in recent gainers, rupee's fall below the 69-mark against the dollar and weak cues from global markets weighed on investor sentiments.

Global cues turned weak tracking Friday's sell-off on the Wall Street after a weak manufacturing data from the US and Europe raised fears of an economic slowdown.

Laggards in domestic equities were Vedanta Ltd, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Kotak Bank, SBI, Tata Motors, RIL, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, HDFC Ltd, Axis Bank, M&amp;M, L&amp;T, IndusInd Bank, ITC Ltd, HCL Tech, Bajaj Auto, HDFC Bank and Infosys, falling by up to 2.16 per cent.

Bucking the trend, shares Coal India, Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp rose up to 0.84 per cent.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs 657.37 crore, while foreign funds bought shares to the tune of Rs 1,374.57 core in Friday's trade, provisional data showed.

Globally, Hong Kong's Hang Seng plunged 2 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei dropped 3.14 per cent, Shanghai Composite Index fell 1.37 per cent in early trade. Singapore's Straits Times dropped 1.39 per cent. Taiwan Index shed 1.48 per cent.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the domestic unit opened lower at 69.07 and slipped further to 69.14 but recovered partially to quote 16 paise down at 69.11 against the dollar.

On Friday, the rupee had ended lower by 12 paise at 68.95 against the American currency on rise in demand for the greenback from importers and sell-off in domestic equities.

Forex dealers said the local unit was weighed down by strong dollar demand from importers to make month-end payments. However, sustained foreign fund inflows and easing crude prices restricted the fall.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought equities worth Rs 1,374.57 crore Friday, provisional data showed.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, slipped 0.82 per cent to $66.48 per barrel.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell by 306.53 points, or 0.80 per cent, at 37,858.08 in early deals.&nbsp;

Besides, investors preferred to keep their portfolios at a low ebb ahead of fiscal 2018-19 coming to an end, they added.

Worries over the health of the global economy heightened last week after cautious remarks by the US Federal Reserve sent 10-year treasury yields to the lowest since early 2018.

Most other Asian markets too ended sharply down, while European shares were trading lower in their opening sessions.

The 30-share Sensex, after opening lower at 38,016.76, stayed in the negative territory through the session and slipped below the 38,000-mark to touch a low of 37,667.40 on mounting selling pressure in sync with the global sell-off.

However, fag-end buying at lower levels trimmed losses to some extent. The benchmark finally ended at 37,808.91 -- down by 355.70 points or 0.93 per cent.

The 50-issue NSE Nifty too cracked below the 11,400-mark and hit a low of 11,311.60, before finishing 102.65 points, or 0.90 per cent down at 11,354.25.

Meanwhile, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) sold shares worth Rs 657.37 crore, while foreign funds remained net buyers, pumping in Rs 1,374.57 crore in Friday's trade, provisional data showed.

Most other Asian markets too ended sharply down, while European shares were trading lower in their opening sessions. The 30-share Sensex, after opening lower at 38,016.76, stayed in the negative territory through the session and slipped below the 38,000-mark to touch a low of 37,667.40 on mounting selling pressure in sync with the global sell-off. However, fag-end buying at lower levels trimmed losses to some extent. The benchmark finally ended at 37,808.91 -- down by 355.70 points or 0.93 per cent. The 50-issue NSE Nifty too cracked below the 11,400-mark and hit a low of 11,311.60, before finishing 102.65 points, or 0.90 per cent down at 11,354.25. Monday's report also said that Jet's lenders may invoke Goyal's entire stake in the airline, and start looking for a new buyer in the coming weeks.

Saddled with more than $1 billion of debt, Jet is struggling to stay afloat. It has delayed payments to banks, suppliers, pilots and lessors — some of which have forced the airline to ground as many as 40 planes.

Jet has survived a near-death experience once before; in 2013, Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways injected $600 million of capital for a 24 per cent stake in the airline, three London Heathrow slots and a majority share in Jet's frequent flyer programme. The infusion helped Jet pare down debt and fight growing domestic competition.

Etihad's stake is likely to be diluted in the near future, the television channel reported.

The three-day China Development Forum, which opened Saturday, focuses on key issues such as the supply-side structural reform, new measures of proactive fiscal policy, and the opening-up of the financial sector and financial stability.

More than 50 officials from the Chinese central government departments and over 150 overseas delegates have participated in the forum, including 96 executives from the world's leading companies and nearly 30 globally well-known scholars.

China has set its GDP growth target for 2019 at between six per cent and 6.5 per cent, according to the annual Government Work Report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang at the opening meeting of the second session of the 13th National People's Congress in Beijing.

The target is lower than last year's goal of around 6.5 per cent, as the country pursues higher-quality development amid mounting uncertainties in the international economic landscape. And experts believe that China will continue to be a key contributor to the world economic growth.

"Though the target of China's economic growth rate is a little bit lower, the economic quality will improve in exchange. Besides, China's influence on the world economy is still growing. In the past ten years, the Chinese economy contributed about 30 to 50 per cent of the world economic growth. Such a figure was stood at 50 per cent in 2009 and is expected to reach up to 30 per cent this year. So China is still an important impetus for the world economic growth," said Zhu Min, Chairman of the National Institute of Financial Research of Tsinghua University.

"We're always looking for opportunities in China. And so we look at China as very investable, and we have funds available. China will continue to occupy a major growth role in the global economy," said Stephen Allen Schwarzman, CEO of the Blackstone Group, a global private equity firm.

A similar idea is also shared by Liu Shijin, deputy director of the Economic Committee of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

"China has always been a key force in promoting economic globalisation. That's not only because China has provided the world with more opportunities in trade investment and technology after its opening-up, but also because it will become an important and active force in improving the structure of global governance," said Liu.

Many businessmen also expressed their willingness to invest in China as the country is pursuing high-level opening-up of its financial sector.

"I think China has to be really commended in the way that it's managed that path of economic growth, and it's been very successful as we have seen over really a very long term now. I think as we go forward from here, what's been interesting is to see how many more areas China is willing and indeed leading the way in terms of developing new thinking internally, which has become very attractive to external investors," said Anne Richards, chief executive officer of Fidelity International, a company that provides investment management services.

"We are always investing in the market place, and we do it through a variety of ways. We have a physical location, a massive manufacturing facility, already in place, but we continue to invest through innovation and through building up our partnerships in the market place so that we can increase our approach to the consumers, to the market place and our operational support. So we continue to invest and see great potential in the market here in China. Besides, the airline has also reduced frequencies on seven other overseas routes, mostly from Delhi and Mumbai, according to airline sources.

The company said that as mentioned earlier, it is actively engaged with all its aircraft lessors and is regularly providing them with updates on the efforts taken to improve the liquidity.

Earlier, sources said routes, where services have been temporarily withdrawn, include Pune-Singapore (seven a week), which was launched with much fanfare late last December, and Pune-Abu Dhabi (seven flights a week).&nbsp;

Jet Airways has already suspended services on the Mumbai-Manchester route.

Gasping for funds and no bailout on the horizon, the Naresh Goyal-controlled airline has now reduced its operations to one-fourth from over 600 daily flights earlier, with just one-third of its 119 fleet being operational.

The airline has discontinued services from Delhi to Abu Dhabi (nine a week), Dammam (14 weekly), Dhaka (11), Hong Kong and Riyadh (seven each a week) up to April 30, said the airline source.

Besides, the airline has also suspended services on the Bangalore-Singapore route, where it flies twice daily, till April 30.

The flights which have been suspended from Mumbai for this period include services to Abu Dhabi (12 weekly), Bahrain (4-7 weekly), and Dammam (14 weekly). These services will remain suspended till April 30, as per the source.

Similarly, flights on the Mumbai-Hong Kong (7 weekly) route will also not be operated between March 23 and April 30, while the Kolkata-Dhaka services have also been suspended till April 30.

The dip had been expected following the company's revenue warning in December, where Apple admitted that iPhone sales and overall earnings would be below most forecasts, citing economic weakness in China and trade frictions between Washington and Beijing.

Lower priced local rivals such as Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo have also been nibbling at the California tech giant's market share in China.&nbsp;

Cook has been a critic of the US-China trade war that has spooked global markets. Last year, he used the China Development Forum as a venue to urge leaders of China and the US to let "calm heads prevail" and to avoid an escalation of tariffs.

Most of Apple's flagship products are assembled in China, leaving the California tech giant acutely vulnerable to Trump's tariffs.

Net employment generation in the formal sector touched a 17-month high of 8.96 lakh in January, according to the latest EPFO payroll data.

The EPFO has been releasing payroll data from April 2018, covering the period starting September 2017.

The addition in January was 131 per cent higher as compared with 3.87 lakh EPFO subscribers added in the year-ago month.

In September 2017, a net of 2,75,609 jobs were created.

Around 76.48 lakh new subscribers were added to social security schemes of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from September 2017 to January 2019, the data showed. This indicates that these many jobs were created in the formal sector over the past 17 months.

The net EPFO enrolment in January 2019 stood at 8,96,516, which is the highest since September 2017.

The EPFO, however, revised slightly downwards its payroll data for December 2018 by 1.8 per cent to 7.03 lakh, against the earlier estimate of 7.16 lakh released last month.

It also revised the cumulative job addition data for the September 2017-December 2018 period downwards 6.6 per cent to 67.52 lakh, from the earlier forecast of 72.32 lakh.

The sharpest revision was for March 2018 in the latest report which showed contraction or exit of 29,023 members from the EPFO subscriptions whereas last month's estimated addition of 5,498 members.

The EPFO data showed that the March 2018 figure is negative due to large number of exits reported in March, in view of it being the closing month of the financial year.

During January 2019, the highest number of 2.44 lakh jobs were created in the 22-25 years age group, followed by 2.24 lakh in the 18-21 years age bracket.

The data of the exited members is based on the claims submitted by the individuals and establishments and the exit data uploaded by employers, whereas the number of new subscribers is based on the Universal Account Number (UAN) generated in the system and those who have received non-zero subscription.

The EPFO said the data is provisional as updation of employee records is a continuous process and gets updated in subsequent months.

This is age-band wise data of new members registered under the EPFO where the first non-zero contribution received during particular month.&nbsp;

For each age-wise band, the estimates are net of the members newly enrolled, exited and rejoined during the month as per records of the EPFO, it added.

The estimates may include temporary employees whose contributions may not be continuous for the entire year. Members' data are linked to unique Aadhaar Identity, it added.

The EPFO manages social security funds of workers in the organised/semi organised sector in India and has more than 6 crore active members (with at least one-month contribution during the year).&nbsp;

Forex dealers said, selling of the American currency by exporters and positive opening in domestic equities supported the rupee.

Fresh foreign fund inflows and easing crude prices also supported the rupee, they added.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net buyers in the capital markets, putting in Rs 1,771.61 crore on a net basis Wednesday, as per provisional data.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, slipped 0.18 per cent to $67.74 per barrel.

Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex was trading higher by 91.03 points, or 0.24 per cent, at 38,477.78; while the NSE Nifty was trading at 11,548, higher by 26.95 points, or 0.23 per cent.&nbsp;

Despite a more than a quarter increase in crude prices this year, Canadian investment bank RBC Capital Markets said oil was "still below the fiscal breakeven level in a number of OPEC countries", meaning that many producers have an interest in further propping up the market.

"With the driver of the OPEC bus, Saudi Arabia, showing no signs of wavering in the face of renewed pressure from Washington, we believe that OPEC is likely to extend the deal for the duration of 2019 when they next assemble in Vienna in June," RBC said.

RBC said Russia was only a reluctant partner in the supply cuts, but would "ultimately opt to preserve the arrangement and retain a leadership role of a 21-nation group that accounts for around 45 percent of global oil output".

Beyond OPEC and Russia's supply policy, oil prices have also been boosted by US sanctions on OPEC-members Iran and Venezuela.

Iranian crude oil shipments have averaged only just over 1 million bpd in March, down from 1.3 million bpd in February and a 2018 peak of at least 2.5 million bpd in April, before the US sanctions were announced.

Venezuelan crude oil production has also dwindled amid US sanctions and an internal political and economic crisis, plunging from a high of more than 3 million bpd at the start of the century to not much more than 1 million bpd currently.

Putting a break on further price increases has been a US crude oil production jump of more than 2 million bpd since early 2018 to a record 12.1 million bpd, making the United States the world's biggest producer ahead of Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Asian shares hit 6-1/2-month highs on Friday after upbeat US data and optimism in the tech sector lifted Wall Street stocks, helping calm some of the jitters sparked by the Federal Reserve's cautious outlook on the world's biggest economy.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.3 per cent, led by 0.5 per cent gains in the infotech sector, while Japan's Nikkei bucked the trend and lost 0.2 per cent.

On Wall Street, the S&amp;P 500 gained 1.09 per cent while the Nasdaq Composite rallied 1.42 per cent, both hitting five-month highs.

Apple Inc led the tech sector's advance, rising 3.7 per cent, ahead of the company's expected streaming service debut next week.

The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index soared 3.5 per cent, coming within a striking distance from its all-time high marked about a year ago.

"I'd think optimism in the tech sector is the biggest driver now. It reflects expectations that the US and China will eventually reach a trade deal," said Soichiro Monji, senior economist at Daiwa SB Investments.

A US trade delegation headed by Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will visit China on March 28-29, which will be followed by a trip by Chinese Vice Premier Liu He to Washington in early April.

Thursday's US economic data was also upbeat as initial claims for jobless benefits fell more than expected and mid-Atlantic factory activity rebounded sharply.

The figures mollified worries about the US economic outlook after the Fed on Wednesday surprised investors by adopting a sharp dovish stance, anticipating no further interest rate hikes this year and ending its balance sheet rolloffs.

The dollar also jumped back, with its index against a basket of six major currencies rising to 96.327 from Wednesday's 1-1/2-month low of 95.735.

The euro traded at $ 1.1374, flat on the day and off Wednesday's 1-1/2-month high of $1.14485.

The dollar stood at 110.74 yen, having hit a five-week low of 110.30 on Thursday.

The benchmark US 10-year notes yield stood at 2.530 per cent after having slipped to as low as 2.500 per cent on Thursday, its lowest since early January last year.

The five-year yield dropped to 2.34 per cent, below the current Fed funds rate around 2.40 per cent, as fed funds rate futures price in about 50 per cent chances of a rate cut this year.

"The main market reaction to the Fed's announcement was that it has become a consensus that the Fed's next move is a rate cut," said Naoya Oshikubo, senior manager at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset.

"As economic data from China and elsewhere has not bottomed out yet, investors will be looking at economic fundamentals for now. If there are improvements, then markets could roll back expectations of a Fed rate cut," he said.

DoubleLine Capital's chief executive Jeffrey Gundlach, known as the "Bond King," said on Thursday that the stock market "likes the fact that they (the Fed) aren't going to give them any problems," for now.

He added, however, the Fed's cautious stance on raising rates could backfire by creating uncertainty in the economy and hurt the U.S. central bank's credibility.

Another cloud hanging over markets was Britain's fraught moves to exit from the European Union, as the British pound was bruised anew by rising worries about a no-deal Brexit.

EU leaders said Britain could leave the European Union without a deal on April 12 if lawmakers fail next week to back Prime Minister Theresa May's agreement with Brussels.

EU leaders gave May an extra two months, until May 22, to leave if she wins next week's vote in parliament.

The pound traded at $1.3136, having dropped to $1.3004 the previous day. Against the euro, it hit one-month low of 0.8722 to euro on Thursday and last stood at 0.8664.

Fitch Ratings Friday cut India's GDP growth forecast for the next fiscal to 6.8 per cent from 7 per cent estimated earlier on weaker than expected economic momentum.

In its latest Global Economic Outlook, Fitch also slashed GDP growth forecast for current fiscal ending March 2019 to 6.9 per cent from 7.2 per cent projected in the December edition.

Tata Motors was the biggest loser in the Sensex pack, tumbling 2.47 per cent, followed by Reliance Industries (2.44 per cent), Maruti (1.84 per cent), SBI (1.76 per cent) and Bajaj Finance (1.23 per cent).

"I'm not going to live or die by what the stock does day in and day out," Chief Executive and President Chip Bergh said in a telephone interview. "We're here to run the business for the long term. It is humbling that the stock was so well received today. That is pretty awesome."

The self-proclaimed inventor of the blue jeans, which has grown to become one of the world's most recognised denim brands, Levi Strauss hopes to use a part of the proceeds from the IPO to expand in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India.

"Denim continues to prove prevalent in streetwear and on the runway, so we're not expecting it to go anywhere anytime soon," an analyst at retail analytics firm Edited said. "That's why now is a great time for Levi's to capitalise on this momentum."

Levi accounted for 5 per cent of the global jeans market in 2018, according to market research firm Euromonitor. The market has remained flat from 2013 to 2018 but is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 2 per cent until 2023 if prices remain at 2018 levels.

Going forward, Bergh also said Levi can double its business in Asia in the next couple of years "and then double it again".

Levi does not disclose its earnings in China but Bergh said it makes up around a quarter of its total Asia business, which had just over $800 million in revenue last year.

Levi first went public in 1971. It then sold 1.27 million shares at $47 each and the stock opened at $60, according to a New York Times report. After 14 years, it was taken private by the Haas family, the descendants of founder Levi Strauss, in a $1.6 billion leveraged buyout.

Levi's second IPO was priced at $17, above the expected range, in an oversubscribed offering. By Thursday afternoon, the shares had hit a high of $23.15.

Levi's market splash marks the start of what could be a blockbuster year for IPOs with several high profile companies expected to list their shares.

Ride-hailing service provider Lyft Inc kicked off the investor roadshow for its market debut on Monday, while larger rival Uber is expected to go public in April.

The line-up also includes photo-posting app Pinterest and business messaging app Slack.

The Haas family, which has over 100 members and is between its fifth and sixth generations, according to Bergh, will retain 80 per cent voting control of the public company.

Bergh said a desire among existing shareholders to diversify, coupled with strong corporate performance and supportive market conditions, led to the decision to go public in 2019.

"The market is pretty ripe and we're the first big IPO of the year," he said. "There was a lot of pent-up demand because it's been pretty slow the last couple of months and that was also probably a tail-wind for us."

The company's $8.7 billion market capitalisation at the start of trading is based on outstanding shares of about 390 million, which includes the over-allotment option.

"There is a lot to like when it comes to Levi Strauss the brand and its outlook moving forward," said Jeff Zell, senior research analyst and partner at IPO tracking firm, IPO Boutique.

"The company and the underwriters targeted a reasonable valuation to start and allowed the true investor demand to dictate price which ultimately came one dollar above range."

Levi's revenue rose 14 per cent to $5.6 billion in 2018, the bulk of which came from men's denim. Its biggest market in the Americas, accounting for 55 per cent of overall revenue.

The San Francisco-based company sells in 110 countries through 50,000 retail stores, and its rivals include Gap Inc and VF Corp's Lee and Wrangler brands.

The self-proclaimed inventor of the blue jeans, which has grown to become one of the world's most recognised denim brands, Levi Strauss hopes to use a part of the proceeds from the IPO to expand in emerging markets such as Brazil, China and India. "Denim continues to prove prevalent in streetwear and on the runway, so we're not expecting it to go anywhere anytime soon," an analyst at retail analytics firm Edited said. "That's why now is a great time for Levi's to capitalise on this momentum." Levi accounted for 5 per cent of the global jeans market in 2018, according to market research firm Euromonitor. "The company and the underwriters targeted a reasonable valuation to start and allowed the true investor demand to dictate price which ultimately came one dollar above range." "While we have cut our growth forecasts for the next fiscal year (FY20, ending March 2020) on weaker than expected momentum, we still see Indian GDP growth to hold up reasonably well at 6.8 per cent followed by 7.1 per cent in FY21," Fitch said.

The rating agency said India's GDP growth softened for the second consecutive quarter in the October-December period at 6.6 per cent after clocking a growth of 7 per cent and 8 per cent in July-September and April-June periods, respectively.

"The slowdown has been driven by cooling activity growth in the manufacturing sector and, to a lesser extent, agriculture. Weaker momentum has been mainly domestically driven," Fitch said.

It said, credit availability has tightened up in areas heavily dependent on non-bank financial companies (NBFCs), such as autos and two-wheelers, where sales have dropped.

Also, food inflation has been muted and fell into negative territory late last year, weighing on farmers' incomes.

According to Fitch rupee is expected to weaken to 72 to a dollar by the end of December 2019, and further to 73 by December 2020, from 69.82 to a dollar in end December 2018.

It said, fiscal and monetary policies are becoming more growth-friendly and RBI adopted a dovish stance and cut interest rates by 0.25 per cent last month.

"We have changed our rate outlook and we now expect another 25bp cut in 2019, amid protracted below-target inflation and easier global monetary conditions than previously envisaged," Fitch said.

Fitch also cut its global GDP forecasts for 2018 and 2019 at 3.2 per cent in 2018 and 2.8 per cent in 2019 from 3.3 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively projected earlier.

It, however, retained China's growth projections at 6.6 per cent in 2018 and 6.1 per cent in 2019.

The broader NSE Nifty, however, ended 11.35 points, or 0.10 per cent, lower at 11,521.05 after shuttling between 11,556.10 and 11,503.10 during the session on expiry of March series derivative contracts.

Sensex rises for 8th session, ends marginally higher

State Bank of India's (SBI) chairman said on Wednesday that putting Jet Airways into bankruptcy is the "last option" and that its lenders are making every effort to keep the airline flying.

"We believe that it is in everybody's interest that Jet Airways continues to fly," SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar told reporters after a meeting with government officials, adding that placing Jet into bankruptcy would mean grounding the airline.

Kumar said that a resolution plan is "almost" ready and that it would not involve a bailout for any individual or the airline's founder Naresh Goyal.

A spokesman for the opposition Congress party earlier on Wednesday held a press conference during which they alleged Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was using state-run banks like SBI to bailout a bankrupt, private airline.
