In a very strange and shocking election campaign, an “entrepreneur” - who has filed a nomination for the position of governor in Tokyo, took off her shirt on a recorded video and asked the people if they found her "sexy" enough to give votes to her.

In the bizarre promotion of herself, the candidate Airi Uchino - who belonged to the populist right-wing NHK Party - was sitting across a table. She was wearing a button-up shirt as she spoke in a high-pitched, anime-style voice to the Japanese voters.

“I’m so cute; please watch my campaign broadcast,” the candidate said while smiling coyly in the video shared on X on June 27. She added, “Do you think I’m sexy?”

She then appealed to the voters to follow her on social media and said that she would respond to each one of them individually before she removed her shirt and was then seen wearing only a tight, skin-coloured tube top. She also posed in a way that made her appear topless on camera.

The woman, who is a cocktail bar owner, removed her glasses and delivered the entire speech in a skimpy outfit. The video soon went viral and garnered millions of views.

Here's how netizens reacted to the viral video

The people were not really happy to see her appeal for votes by stripping her shirt.

''While it is true that people strive to stand out, and our society's obsession with appearances often rewards outlandish behaviour, nevertheless, individuals who lack substance will inevitably be unmasked by the passage of time," said one user.

''At this point, they should change the rules… the race is turning into a farce and distracting people from the real issues. Democracy and all but this is not it," commented another.

A team of scientists from the University of Bristol studied the earliest ecosystem on Earth to understand when life began flourishing on our planet, just a hundred million years after planetary formation.

The new study was published in Nature Ecology & Evolution. The living beings are said to have come from a single common ancestor known as LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor), according to the scientists.

LUCA is a hypothesised common ancestor from which it is believed all modern cellular life has descended.

The living beings that evolved from LUCA also came from different sources: the amino acids which had built proteins in other cellular organisms, cellular machinery like the ribosome and others, and the shared energy currency.

The team compared all the genes in the genomes of living species, counting the mutations that have occurred within their sequences over time since they shared an ancestor in LUCA.

Some species' time of separation was understood from the fossil record and a genetic equivalent of the familiar equation was used by the team to understand when LUCA existed, which was found to be 4.2 billion years ago - nearly four hundred million years after the Earth and our solar system was formed.

LUCA was a complex organism, exploiting its environment: Scientists

The study's co-author Dr Sandra Álvarez-Carretero said, "We did not expect LUCA to be so old, within just hundreds of millions of years of Earth formation. However, our results fit with modern views on the habitability of early Earth."

The researchers also worked on LUCA's biology by modelling the physiological characteristics of living species with the genealogy of LUCA's life.

Explaining the process, lead author Dr Edmund Moody said, "The evolutionary history of genes is complicated by their exchange between lineages. We have to use complex evolutionary models to reconcile the evolutionary history of genes with the genealogy of species."

"Our study showed that LUCA was a complex organism, not too different from modern prokaryotes, but what is really interesting is that it's clear it possessed an early immune system, showing that even by 4.2 billion years ago, our ancestor was engaging in an arms race with viruses," said co-author Professor Davide Pisani, while speaking about the features of LUCA.

Taking this discussion further, co-author Tim Lenton said, "It's clear that LUCA was exploiting and changing its environment, but it is unlikely to have lived alone. Its waste would have been food for other microbes, like methanogens, that would have helped to create a recycling ecosystem."

Earth was barren till life came into existence 4.2 billion years ago: Study

The eerie red lights, which were glowing in the atmosphere of the Earth and above the coast of South Africa, were captured by a NASA astronaut from a window aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

On June 21, NASA's SpaceX Crew-8 mission commander Matthew Dominick captured the mesmerising image. The red glowing light was actually a sudden flash of a weather phenomenon called 'red sprite' lightning.

Red sprites are said to flash above thunderclouds in the upper atmosphere, known as the mesosphere, which extends up to 53 miles (85 kilometres) above the surface.

In the image, blood-red bursts of energy were seen shining above the coast of South Africa.

What is a red sprite?

Red sprites are a type of electrical bursts of light which are formed above the highly active thunderstorms.

These are found in the D region of the ionosphere, which is the area above the dense lower atmosphere nearly 37 to 56 miles from the Earth.

The light appears red at higher altitudes and turns to blue at lower heights. For nearly a century, scientists have known that atmospheric sprites, however, their origins have remained a mystery.

They occur for only a few milliseconds and are comparatively dim in comparison to other lightning.

India's reputed Delhi University found itself in trouble after the Faculty of Law suggested teaching the ancient Hindu legal text 'Manusmriti' to the LLB students.

The Faculty of Law submitted a proposal to include the Hindu manuscript in undergraduate courses, which led to an uproar.

Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh later said that 'Manusmriti' will not be taught to the LLB students.

Issuing a video statement, Singh said that in the paper titled 'Jurisprudence', the Faculty of Law had suggested changes on Thursday (July 11) and that they suggested including readings on 'Manusmriti', which was rejected by the university.

Even after the university rejected the proposal to teach 'Manusmriti' to LLB students, it will discussed in the university's Academic Council meeting on Friday (July 12).

Dean of the Faculty of Law Anju Wali Tikoo said, "It is part of understanding our Indian scholars. The meaning that is being construed that it is against women's empowerment and their education is wrong and that it is against marginalised castes is incorrect. The topic is themed as 'analytical positivism'."

"If we don’t understand what our ancient scriptures said and what they meant, then how can we analyse and develop an understanding of studying the course?" she added.

"The recommendations were given by the DU committee. This topic has not come all of a sudden. There were consultations of scholars, including a retired judge of a high court. There was a standing council meeting on June 25. I was a part of that meeting and no one opposed it then. Suddenly some people have woken up," Tikoo said.

In a draconian move, a Chinese company locked its employee inside a “small dark room” for four days to force him to submit his resignation.

The incident came to the public after a court ruling in this case was challenged by the company Guangzhou Duoyi Network Co Ltd.

The complete court document was published by the company on its official Weibo account in which they openly disagreed with a ruling given by a district-level court in May in Sichuan province, southwestern China.

The court had said that Guangzhou Duoyi Network’s subsidiary in Sichuan needs to pay their employee Liu Linzhu ¥380,000 ($52,200) as compensation for their torturous actions.

Responding to the court's ruling, the company said, “We believe that there are many problems with the labour laws which severely hinder economic development and are arbitrarily enforced by judges who distort the facts.”

Here's how the incident unfolded

The incident happened in December 2022 when Liu discovered that he had been logged out from the computer system of the company and was also not able to use his entry pass.

The employee faced this situation after protracted negotiations over his resignation.

The company said to Liu that he needed to participate in “training” and took him to a room, which was on a different floor and not on the one where his workstation was.

The room was pitch dark and had no power supply. There were no computers and none of his colleagues were present there. The room was furnished only with a table and chair.

For four days, Liu was given permission to walk out of the room “freely” and go home after “work”, but no tasks were assigned to him and the company also confiscated his mobile phone.

Nearly one out of four people depend on groundwater - which is pumped from below the surface of the Earth - for survival since they lack access to streams, dams and freshwater lakes.

However, by the end of this century, tens to hundreds of millions are likely to be deprived of this groundwater as rising temperatures are likely to make it toxic and undrinkable.

The findings were based on the global-scale model of heat transport developed by an international team of researchers to measure how the temperature would change in groundwater sources across the world under different warming conditions.

According to this study, around 590 million people are likely to rely on water sources which may not meet the strictest standards for potable water till 2100.

"A lot of focus on climate change has rightfully been to do with weather events and the availability of water," said hydrologist Dylan Irvine from Charles Darwin University in Australia, as quoted by Science Alert.

"But we do need to think more broadly about the impact that climate change will have on groundwater," he added.

The warming of groundwater and its catastrophic consequences have been ignored for years. The water trapped within porous rocks can be filled with dissolved minerals, pollutants, and potential pathogens,

If this water is heated by a degree or two, it can take away oxygen from the environment and lead to the growth of dangerous bacteria. It can also cause the dissolution of excessive concentrations of heavy metals like manganese or arsenic.

A geoscientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and the study's lead author Susanne Benz said, "There are already about 30 million people living in regions where the groundwater is warmer than stipulated in the strictest drinking water guidelines."

"That means it may not be safe to drink the water there without treatment. It may need to be boiled first, for example. The drinking water also gets warmed up in water pipes by heat in the ground," he added.

Even in populations which have sufficiently sized surface reservoirs, the heated groundwater's discharges can cause an alteration of key dynamics which keep its water safe for human consumption.

In the wake of the 'shared socioeconomic pathway', the current figures can double with 188 million people living in an area in which the groundwater is not meeting the strictest of standards for drinkability by 2100.

Earth's groundwater to turn 'undrinkable' for half a billion people by 2100: Study

Scientists have been hunting for any trace of life on planet Mars for decades and now a new study has spilled out the details of the past climatic conditions on the Red Planet which has dampened down their hopes of encountering an alien life.

For all those who had hoped that the planet was warm and wet and may have had seas and rivers flowing, the study has presented a starkly different picture of the planet which existed millions of years ago.

The study has said that Mars was rather icy and frigid, which has decreased its chances of supporting any kind of life in the past.

In the latest study, scientists have found similarities between soils present on Mars and those picked from Newfoundland in Canada, which has a cold subarctic climate.

Researchers of the study, published in Communications Earth and Environment, searched for soils on Earth which contained comparable materials to those present in the Gale Crater of Mars.

A new study has challenged the existence of extreme cosmic objects, called "kugelblitze", which are black holes formed only from light.

The new theory states that it is not possible for such a black hole to be formed in our universe which challenges the theory of general relativity given by scientist Albert Einstein.

The study has shown how general relativity and quantum mechanics can be reconciled for solving complex scientific questions and placed some constraints on cosmological models.

Black holes are massive cosmic bodies which have intense gravitational pull from which even light fails to escape.

The black holes are formed because of the collapse of massive stars when their life cycles end and the pressure from thermonuclear reactions in their cores is no longer able to counteract the force of gravity.

What is kugelblitz, a 'hypothetical black hole'?

However, there is one type of black hole formation formula which is a more exotic hypothesis.

This theory explains the creation of a "kugelblitz", which is a German word for "ball lightning."

Explaining this black hole to Live Science, physicist and study co-author Jose Polo-Gomez at the University of Waterloo and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada said, "A kugelblitz is a hypothetical black hole that, instead of forming from the collapse of 'ordinary matter' (whose main constituents are protons, neutrons, and electrons), is formed from concentrating humongous amounts of electromagnetic radiation, such as light."

"Even though light does not have mass, it does carry energy," added Polo-Gomez. He said that Einstein's theory of general relativity proposes that energy leads to the creation of curvatures in space-time which result in gravitational attractions.

"Because of that, it is in principle possible for light to form black holes — if we concentrate enough of it in a small enough volume," the author said.

The team discovered that, even under the most extreme circumstances, it is not possible for pure light to reach the required energy threshold for forming a black hole.

No black holes birthed by light exist in universe. So, was Einstein wrong?

To make a mark in the world of space science, China has now planned to strike an asteroid to deflect it by 2030, on the pretext of planetary defence.

The scientists have said that the mission has a dual purpose - the asteroid will be impacted by one spacecraft and its partner will make observations of the space rock to understand more about the solar system and its formation.

As per the reports, the near-Earth object (NEO) 2015 XF261 - which is a 100-foot-wide (30-metre) asteroid - is most probably the selected target of the China National Space Administration (CNSA) mission.

According to the database of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), asteroid 2015 XF261 had made a relatively close flyby to Earth on Tuesday (July 9). It was at a distance of 31 million miles (50 million kilometres) from Earth.

The space rock whizzed at a speed of around 26,000 mph (42,000 kph), which was 30 times faster than the speed of sound.

NASA's DART to pave way for Chinese mission

It was reported by the nonprofit Planetary Society that the proposed 2015 XF261-targeting mission was discussed in a recent paper in the Journal of Deep Space Exploration.

"For China's first near-Earth asteroid defence on-orbit verification mission, a defensive disposal demonstration will be carried out on the potential risk of near-Earth asteroids impacting the Earth," stated the study.

"The scientific objectives of the on-orbit verification of asteroid defence and its specific scientific exploration mission will be designed and proposed," it added.

"A scientific payload demand analysis will be carried out, and payload configuration plans and exploration mission requirements will be proposed to provide a decision-making basis for the future implementation of asteroid defence missions," researchers wrote.

China is set to follow in the footsteps of NASA's planetary defence mission - the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) - which deflected a small body in the Didymos binary asteroid system in September 2022.

It is difficult to say if the asteroid will be safely deflected or if our Earth will face some impact, in case the process goes wrong. One cannot forget the mounting evidence which suggests how an asteroid hitting the planet Earth led to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
