The mechanism behind this has been unknown. "Learning and memory is often attributed as functions of the brain exclusively. Although scientists knew for more than a century that the spinal cord could learn and adapt movements in the absence of brain input, we did not know how the spinal cord learns and memorises what is has learned," Aya Takeoka, the author of the study, told Newsweek. "Gaining insights into the underlying mechanism is essential if we want to understand the foundations of movement automaticity in healthy people and use this knowledge to improve recovery after spinal cord injury," she added. How did the researchers derive the conclusion? To understand the roles of neurons in reflexive learning, the researchers first tested whether spinal cord cells could adapt to sensory inputs in the absence of brain impulses. Once they tested that with the help of a pair of mice, they learned that the spinal cord could learn and remember independently of the brain. Next, they tried to find the neuronal circuitry that was helping the spinal cord to store memory. They discovered that the spinal cord does not need learning cells or memory cells for recalling and learning what it has experienced. "The two groups of nerve cells have distinct functions; learning cells are not needed for recalling what the spinal cord had learned, and memory cells were not needed for learning," researchers derived. "Not only do these results challenge the prevailing notion that motor learning and memory are solely confined to brain circuits, but we showed that we could manipulate spinal cord motor recall, which has implications for therapies designed to improve recovery after spinal cord damage," Takeoka added.

"Our interpretation suggests that the banded structures of geometric patterns could be representations of the cosmos—its spheres and events connected to its creation and its exploration, which could have come about during ritual ceremonies of which dance and song were the quintessence," researchers said. "The associations of danzantes with banded structures of patterns might embody visualization of being in this parallel world, emphasizing its authenticity and invariability," they added. The authors believe that these engravings were created while under the influence of hallucinogenic plants. "The scene on boulder TM 1219 indeed presents surprising similarities to the Tukano drawings, in terms not only of individual motifs but also their arrangement," the researchers said. Earlier research has shown that many of these carvings were carved during rituals by people under the influence of ayahuasca, a beverage prepared from psychotropic vines. The carvings in Toro MuertoinGiven are similar to those in the earlier research leading to the belief that they were created by people on hallucinogenic herbs.

As we dug in deeper, we found that these were spikes of expelled magnetic flux, dust, and gas," Kazui Tokada added. "This is a phenomenon called 'interchange instability' where instabilities in the magnetic field react with the different densities of the gases in the protostellar disk, resulting in an outward expelling of magnetic flux. We dubbed this a baby star's 'sneeze' as it reminded us of when we expel dust and air at high speeds," he explained.

“We all know cancer is an ageing disease. However, it is really coming to a younger population. So, whether we can use the well-developed concept of biological ageing to apply that to the younger generation is a really untouched area,” Yin Cao, the senior author of the study said.

<h2>What is biological age?</h2>

Biological age is different from chronological age (the number of years a person has been alive).&nbsp;It refers to the age of one's cells and tissues based on physiological evidence. For instance, if someone is healthy and fit for their age, their biological age might be lower than their chronological age. Likewise, if someone is in poor physical condition, their biological age may be higher. 
“Unlike chronological age, biological age may be influenced by factors such as diet, physical activity, mental health, and environmental stressors. Accumulating evidence suggests that the younger generations may be ageing more swiftly than anticipated, likely due to earlier exposure to various risk factors and environmental insults,” she added.

The study aimed to determine if accelerated ageing, i.e. one's biological age being higher than the chronological age, contributes to the development of&nbsp;cancers at a young age.&nbsp;

The research analysed data from almost 1,50,000 participants in the UK Biobank database and calculated their biological age using nine blood biomarkers such as albumin, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, C-reactive protein, glucose, mean corpuscular volume, red cell distribution width, white blood cell count, and lymphocyte proportion.

The biological age trend showed that those who were born in or after 1965 had a 17% higher chance of accelerated ageing compared to those who were born between 1950 and 1954.

“By examining the relationship between accelerating ageing and the risk of early-onset cancers, we provide a fresh perspective on the shared etiology of early-onset cancers. If validated, our findings suggest that interventions to slow biological ageing could be a new avenue for cancer prevention, and screening efforts tailored to younger individuals with signs of accelerated ageing could help detect cancers early," Tian said.

The study discovered that a standard deviation increase in accelerated ageing was linked to a 42% higher risk of developing lung cancer, a 22% higher risk of gastrointestinal cancer, and a 36% higher risk of uterine cancer early on. The research could be a game changer in the early diagnosis and prevention of cancer.

Tian highlighted the potential implications of these findings, suggesting that interventions aimed at slowing biological ageing could be a novel approach to cancer prevention.

Since the study only had participants from the United Kingdom it might mean that the findings of this research might not apply to people with different genetic backgrounds and environmental conditions.

Lan's family member speaking to&nbsp;Reuters before the verdict was out said&nbsp;she will contest the death penalty if issued.

They face charges of bribery, abuse of power, appropriation, and violations of banking law. Prosecutors wanted Lan to face the death penalty.&nbsp;

Vietnam has undergone a national corruption crackdown. Around 4,400 people have been indicted in this corruption crackdown wave. "In my desperation, I thought of death," Lan said in court last week.

She denied being a part of the money embezzlement and said, "I am so angry that I was stupid enough to get involved in this very fierce business environment -- the banking sector -- which I have little knowledge of."

According to the authorities, $5.2 million was allegedly given as bribe (largest recorded in Vietnam)&nbsp;to SCB bankers to help cover up the fraud.

According to state media, Do Thi Nhan, the former chief of the State Bank of Vietnam's inspection team and the person who was offered the bribe, said that she was given the cash in Styrofoam boxes, but&nbsp;when she realised they were filled with cash, she refused the 'bribe'.

Last year, FRA found that black people in the EU countries are facing higher levels of discrimination. 45 per cent of the respondents in the EU survey said that they have been affected by racism which was 6 per cent up from 2016.
