Four years ago, Americans were not thrilled with their choices, and this time around, it is more of the same.

On one hand, there is the 81-year-old Democrat whose age has been in the spotlight more than his policies and time in office and on the other&nbsp;78-year-old&nbsp;convicted felon.&nbsp;

Biden is the oldest American president and has repeatedly failed to quell the concerns about his age, and this debate may be the final nail in the coffin for&nbsp;Democrats.&nbsp;

Thursday’s debate was also Trump’s first since he opted out of Republican primary debates.&nbsp;

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s performance was much like one of his rallies marked by false claims, attacking people, and boasting about his (non)achievements.&nbsp;

In an interview with MSNBC after the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “It was a slow start…but I thought it was a strong finish.”&nbsp;

This quote essentially encapsulates Biden’s underwhelming performance; as he did manage to talk about some of the policies that he plans to work on if reelected, calling it a “strong finish” would be a bit of a stretch.&nbsp;

The 90-minute debate between the two oldest presidential candidates was hosted by CNN in Atlanta, Georgia, with no audience.&nbsp;

Biden and Trump were asked questions related to a range of issues including, the economy, abortion, and foreign policy.&nbsp;

Economy

The debate started with questions about one of the top concerns among American voters – the economy.&nbsp;

With soaring inflation and a rise in the cost of living, voters are concerned about which candidate will take over the White House for the next four years and how their policies will affect the economy.&nbsp;

While both Trump and Biden have improved certain sections of the economy during their time in office, recent polls have indicated that voters favour Republicans over Democrats when it comes to handling the economy.&nbsp;

Less than 15 minutes into the debate, Biden while talking about Medicare and tax reforms seemingly lost his train of thought.&nbsp;

Tax reform would create money to help “strengthen our healthcare system, making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I was able to do with the, with the COVID, excuse me, with dealing with everything we had to do with,” he&nbsp;said.&nbsp;

After pausing and a few seconds of fumbling, the incumbent president continued, “We finally beat Medicare.”

Meanwhile, Trump falsely&nbsp;claimed that the US had the “greatest economy in the history of our country” when he was in office.

According to a fact-check by the Associated Press, the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a massive recession and the Trump administration borrowed $3.1 trillion in 2020 to stabilise it.&nbsp;

Furthermore, even if the pandemic factor is excluded, growth after inflation under Trump averaged 2.49 per cent, as per data from the World Bank.&nbsp;

The former president also left fewer jobs than when he took office.&nbsp;

Abortion

On the campaign trail, Trump has repeatedly taken credit for overturning Roe v Wade, the constitutional right to an abortion, which had been in place for 50 years.&nbsp;

Abortion is <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/biden-vs-trump-in-us-presidential-debate-2024-top-takeaways-explained-735850">one of the issues</a> where Democrats have the upper hand and support from voters, but Biden failed to rise to the occasion.&nbsp;

Surprisingly, Trump said that he supported the recent decision where the Supreme Court unanimously rejected an effort to restrict access to the abortion pill, but&nbsp;still thinks that the decision about abortion rights should be left up to the states.&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;in true Trump fashion, he went on to make an outlandish claim that Democrats are allowing “late-term abortions” – which is not a medical term – and falsely claimed the former governor of Virginia supported killing babies.&nbsp;

The claim stems from an interview when the then-governor of Virginia Ralph Northam, a Democrat,&nbsp;was describing a hypothetical situation where a foetus was severely deformed or wasn’t otherwise viable.&nbsp;

He suggested that the “infant would be delivered,” “kept comfortably,” and “resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired.” However, at no point did he talk about killing the newborn.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Biden said he would restore Roe v Wade, but then seemingly mixed up two different stories as he digressed and somehow ended up talking about a “young woman who just was murdered…by an immigrant.”

Immigration

Since the beginning of the debate, Trump seemed eager to talk about the border and immigration; bringing&nbsp;it up 11 and a half minutes into the debate saying that the only jobs that Biden created were for illegal immigrants.&nbsp;

Notably, the former president said the word “border” 36 times during the 90-minute debate and repeatedly attacked his successor over border security.&nbsp;

Immigration and border security are the top Republican talking points and have been central to their messaging ahead of this election.&nbsp;

While talking about immigration, Trump falsely claimed “people are coming in and killing our citizens at a level like we’ve never seen before.”&nbsp;

He also claimed that Biden wants to “open borders” which is also incorrect considering the incumbent has recently signed restrictive measures into law which are similar to that of his predecessor.&nbsp;

Foreign policy&nbsp;

The presidential nominees were asked about the Russia-Ukraine war as well as the conflict&nbsp;between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. But, Trump repeatedly attacked Biden over America’s chaotic departure from Afghanistan in 2021.&nbsp;

Notably,&nbsp;Russian President&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russias-sarcastic-jibe-at-biden-trump-debate-putin-didnt-set-his-alarm-736142">Vladimir Putin</a> was mentioned nearly 12 times during the debate as Trump and Biden butted heads over the Ukraine war.

“If we had a real president, (who)...was respected by Putin, he would have never invaded Ukraine,” said the former president.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Biden called the Russian president a “war criminal” and criticised Trump for the time he said he would let Putin take over Ukraine and pull out of NATO. “He has no idea what the hell he’s talking about.”

Speaking about the war in Gaza, Trump said that Biden has “become a Palestinian” and is not letting Israel “finish the job”.&nbsp;

On the contrary, the Biden administration has repeatedly come under fire over their support for Israel, with polls showing a dip in the number of young voters backing the incumbent US president because of it.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Biden spoke about his peace plan for Gaza and said that the US is “providing Israel all the weapons they need.”

When asked about the January 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters, Trump avoided answering the question and said on that day “nobody” was coming through the border, we had the “lowest taxes ever,” “lowest regulations ever,” and the US was “respected all over the world”.&nbsp;

Subsequently, the debate moderator pressed Trump to answer saying that voters are “worried” that you will do that again.&nbsp;

Eventually, Trump, speaking of the day when his supporters stormed the US Capitol in a bid to stop the certification of Biden’s victory, falsely claimed there were a “relatively small number of people” and in “many cases were ushered in by the police.”

“If it’s a fair and legal and good election, absolutely,” said Trump in his response.&nbsp;

It is safe to say that this debate did not go well for Biden and his underwhelming performance has sent Democrats into a frenzy.&nbsp;

Prominent Democratic lawmakers are worried, a Congressional aide who works for a Democratic senator told Reuters. She noted her boss is “sitting with other frontline members and panicking. Let the Democratic bedwetting begin.”

A flash poll by CNN following the debate showed Trump was leading against Biden with 67 per cent of debate watchers voting for the former president when compared to the 33 per cent supporting the incumbent president.&nbsp;

“Joe Biden looked very weak and confused right from the start…I was shocked and dismayed. I hate to see our president acting that way on TV and in front of the world,” one of the 13 “undecideds” told Reuters.

According to the IFAW, around 125 Atlantic white-sided dolphins became stranded off Cape Cod out of which at least 10 have died. The incident has prompted an intensive rescue effort.&nbsp;

The organisation said that it was assisting the dolphins stuck at The Gut or Great Island at the Herring River in Massachusetts, which they described as “the epicenter of mass strandings,” in a social media post.&nbsp;

The 10 dolphins had died before IFAW staff even arrived on the scene, Hedman said.

The group which rescues, rehabilitates and releases animals, called this the “largest single mass stranding event” in its over 25-year history, in a post on X.&nbsp;

A report by Cape Cod Times said many dolphins were completely out of the water, while others were seen in shallow waters nearby. &nbsp;

The IFAW director of communications noted that there was “no set reason for why these dolphins strand.”

She added, “Cape Cod is a global stranding hotspot due to the curvature of our shores and the fluctuation of our tides.”&nbsp;

<h2>Rescue efforts&nbsp;</h2>

The group said that with low tide at 11:23 am (local time), their staff and volunteers were in shallow water on foot attempting to herd the dolphins back out to deeper waters.&nbsp;

Additionally, the IFAW said it was also using three small vessels to continue herding efforts and underwater pingers to urge the dolphins to move towards deeper waters.&nbsp;

“The plan, given the number, is to triage and aim to support animals, refloat and herd as many as possible,” Hedman told CNN, in a statement.&nbsp;

It added, “Luckily, it is cooler today, but these animals will risk sunburn and overheating until the tide rises, and then we have the challenge of herding them into deeper water.”

The group said at least 25 IFAW staff and 100 volunteers were on the scene. They are working with the support of Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the Center for Coastal Studies, AmeriCorps of Cape Cod and the New England Aquarium.

The results -- the first under a new electoral system in which Mongolians vote for both proportional lists and individuals representing large districts -- mean the MPP will govern with a greatly reduced majority.

The new parliament will see the MPP hold 54 per cent of the seats, compared to around 80 per cent in 2020.

"This election result definitely represents a rebuke to MPP and the entirety of its leadership," Bayarlkhagva Munkhnaran, an analyst and former official with the National Security Council of Mongolia, told AFP.

Analysts had expected the MPP to retain the majority it has enjoyed since 2016 and govern for another four years.

They say the party can credit much of its success to a boom in coal mining that fuelled double-digit growth and dramatically improved standards of living, as well as to a formidable party machine.

The 33-page filing submitted by prosecutors, on Monday (Jun 24) working on Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team which is investigating Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents dismissed the argument made by his lawyers who said that the case should be tossed as the order of documents in the boxes was slightly changed.&nbsp;

The prosecutors also took this opportunity to release previously unseen photos taken by the FBI during its August 2022 search of Trump’s estate in Florida, Mar-a-Lago and note the “haphazard manner” in which the documents were stored.&nbsp;

In the images, documents containing sensitive information were seen stored alongside clothing, picture frames, cases of Diet Coke, red MAGA (Make America Great Again) hats and Christmas ornaments.&nbsp;

The filing came after the former president’s lawyers asked the presiding US district judge Aileen Cannon to dismiss the charges against Trump since the evidence was spoiled and it would affect the defence’s ability to make their argument.&nbsp;

<h2>Judge does not agree with search warrant argument</h2>

While Smith’s investigation into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents has been indefinitely delayed, Cannon is considering a series of motions filed by the former president’s legal team in hopes of getting the case dismissed.&nbsp;

In connection to one such bid, on Tuesday (Jun 25), the judge seemed sceptical about the claims that there was an issue with the warrant the FBI obtained to search the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate.&nbsp;

This comes after Trump’s lawyers argued at a recent court hearing that the 2022 search warrant was overly broad and violated the former president’s rights.&nbsp;

However, Cannon said she had “a hard time seeing” any problems with the warrant noting that the language in the order which a magistrate judge signed off on&nbsp;seems to have been sufficient.

A formal ruling on Trump’s bid to get the case and the evidence collected thrown out is still pending and Cannon did not indicate when she would issue a verdict.&nbsp;

Russia launched three missiles overnight on Ukraine, out of which air defence systems over Kyiv destroyed two, said Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk, on Sunday, in a post on Telegram. However, he did not say what happened to the third missile.&nbsp;

The Ukrainian capital, its surrounding region and several others across the war-torn country were under air raid alerts for about an hour on Sunday morning, starting at 4:50 am (local time), reported Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine launches drone attack</h2>

Ukraine launched dozens of drones overnight targeting several Russian regions, said local officials on Sunday.&nbsp;

At least 30 drones were destroyed over the Russian region of Bryansk, which borders Ukraine, said the regional governor.&nbsp;

Several drones were also destroyed over the Smolensk region, Vasily Anokhin, governor of the region in Russia’s west said.&nbsp;

As per preliminary information, there were no casualties or destruction in either region, the governors said.

Ukrainian officials said four Russian guided bombs hit an apartment building in Kharkiv. Images from the site show parts of the five-storey building in ruins with windows smashed, balconies wrecked and rubble scattered around a crater created on the ground due to the attack.&nbsp;

Kharkiv Police Chief Serhiy Bolvinov, as per Reuters, told public broadcaster Suspilne that three floors had collapsed, but they believe no one was trapped under the rubble.&nbsp;

The attack prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to call for more military aid for Kyiv to help deal with the growing threat of such weapons.

“This Russian terror through guided bombs must be stopped and can be stopped,” Zelensky wrote in a post on Telegram after the attack.&nbsp;

He added, “We need strong decisions from our partners to enable us to stop the Russian terrorists and Russian military aviation right where they are.”&nbsp;

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) in a statement said that the man was later transferred to medics for treatment.&nbsp;

Azmi’s family told Reuters that there was an arrest raid during which he was injured and when they asked for an ambulance, the army took Mujahed, strapped him on the hood and drove off.

<h2>IDF says investigating soldiers involved</h2>

According to Israeli media reports, the IDF personnel were in the midst of an operation in the Wadi Burqin area near the city of Jenin to detain wanted Palestinians.

The IDF said that their soldiers violated military protocol and would launch an investigation into their actions.&nbsp;

“The suspect was taken by the forces while tied on top of a vehicle,” said the Israeli military in a statement.&nbsp;

“The conduct seen in the video is inconsistent with IDF orders and what is expected of its soldiers,” said the IDF.&nbsp;It added that the “incident is being investigated and will be dealt with accordingly.”
