Canada on Tuesday said that the creation of a new global fund for biodiversity "would take years" and be less effective than reforming existing financial mechanisms. Reflecting the wider consensus among developed nations in the COP15 meeting currently underway in Montreal, the creation of a global fund for biodiversity has emerged as a key sticking point in the ongoing negotiations.

"The countries of the North understand that ambition must be accompanied by financial resources," Canadian Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault said at a press conference on Tuesday in Montreal.

But "my concern is that the creation of new funding could take years, and during those years, countries in the South wouldn't be receiving any money from that fund," he added.

He said that the Global Environment Facility, currently the main multilateral mechanism for biodiversity, took seven years to create. Donors have pledged $5.3 billion to this fund for its current cycle, 2022-2026.

“So I think it would be better to use existing funds while pursuing reforms that would make money more accessible,” he said.

"On the other hand, we have to agree on the fact that it cannot only be public money," said Guilbeault, stressing that private and philanthropic contributions must come into play, as well as multilateral lenders such as the World Bank and IMF.

"We all need to push harder this week," he concluded, after the first week of talks ended in stalemate.

Germany is unable to save enough gas to rule out winter shortages, the country's grid agency head said. Germany missed its crucial target of a 20 per cent cut in consumption last week amid sub-zero temperatures in most of the country.

Following the war, Germany's economy minister Robert Habeck announced that the country will save 20 per cent of its energy consumption. This was 5 per cent higher than the goal set by the European Commission.

Indian yoga instructors have accused the West of devoiding Yoga of its innate spiritual elements and transforming it into a "sexy" exercise with lifestyle accessories. The 'whitewashing' of Yoga, has resulted in its popularisation among thin, white women where it is sold as a lifestyle with class barriers.

Vikram Jeet Singh, a yoga instructor from Goa told The South China Morning Post that "his own culture" in the form of true yoga had been wiped out. "And now my own culture is being repackaged and sold to me under a different form," he added.

Is Yoga becoming inaccessible to many due to West's whitewashing?

Twitter staffers believed that tweets by former US President Donald Trump in the run-up to January 6 Capital riots did not violate the company's policies, revealed the fifth instalment of Elon Musk's 'Twitter Files'. The microblogging platform, then led by Jack Dorsey, had famously said that Trump had violated Twitter's policies by using the platform to 'incite violence'.

"For years, Twitter had resisted calls both internal and external to ban Trump on the grounds that blocking a world leader from the platform or removing their controversial tweets would hide important information that people should be able to see and debate," Bari Weiss of The Free Press wrote toward while unveiling the fifth instalment of 'Twitter Files'.

"But after January 6, as @mtaibbi and @shellenbergermd have documented, pressure grew, both inside and outside of Twitter, to ban Trump."

'Employee advocacy' led to Trump's Twitter ban

Bari Weiss published the screenshots of the internal Slack conversations of Twitter employees. However, there were dissenters who didn't agree with the wider opinion that Trump should be banned from the platform. Weiss said, "Twitter staff assigned to evaluate tweets quickly concluded that Trump had *not* violated Twitter’s policies."

"I think we’d have a hard time saying this is incitement," a staffer said, according to Weiss. "It's pretty clear he's saying the ‘American Patriots’ are the ones who voted for him and not the terrorists (we can call them that, right?) from Wednesday."

"Don’t see the incitement angle here," another staffer agreed, per Weiss.

Donald Trump's last tweet did not violate Twitter policies too

Trump's last tweet before being banned from the platform stated that he will not attend then-president-elect Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony. According to Twitter Files 5.0, the platform's safety team concluded at the time: "It's a clear no vio(lation). It's just to say he's not attending the inauguration."

"Less than 90 minutes after Twitter employees had determined that Trump’s tweets were not in violation of Twitter policy, Vijaya Gadde—Twitter’s Head of Legal, Policy, and Trust—asked whether it could, in fact, be ‘coded incitement to further violence,’" Weiss reported in Twitter Files 5.0.

"A few minutes later, Twitter employees on the ‘scaled enforcement team’ suggest that Trump’s tweet may have violated Twitter’s Glorification of Violence policy—if you interpreted the phrase ‘American Patriots’ to refer to the rioters."

"Things escalate from there," Weiss continued. "Members of that team came to ‘view him as the leader of a terrorist group responsible for violence/deaths comparable to Christchurch shooter or Hitler and on that basis and on the totality of his Tweets, he should be de-platformed.’

Weiss then wrote about the 30-minute all-staff meeting led by Dorsey and Gadde, who were confronted by staffers about why Trump had not been banned.

"One hour later, Twitter announces Trump’s permanent suspension ‘due to the risk of further incitement of violence.’ Many at Twitter were ecstatic," Weiss wrote, sharing communications from staffers celebrating the Trump ban.

The Trump ban then inspired a crackdown by the platform on "medical misinformation," with Weiss reporting that the next day a renewed push by the tech giant, according to internal communications.

She quoted one staffer who said, "For the longest time, Twitter’s stance was that we aren’t the arbiter of truth, which I respected but never gave me a warm fuzzy feeling."

"But Twitter’s COO Parag Agrawal—who would later succeed Dorsey as CEO—told Head of Security Mudge Zatko: ‘I think a few of us should brainstorm the ripple effects’ of Trump's ban.' Agrawal added: ‘centralized content moderation IMO has reached a breaking point now,’" Weiss reported.

Weiss concluded her thread, "Ultimately, the concerns about Twitter’s efforts to censor news about Hunter Biden’s laptop, blacklist disfavored views, and ban a president aren’t about the past choices of executives in a social media company. They’re about the power of a handful of people at a private company to influence the public discourse and democracy."

Mumbai-headquartered Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has been accused of discriminatory hiring practices in the United States. The company is facing a class action lawsuit in the US over allegations of favouring Indian and South Asian candidates.

Shawn Katz, a former TCS employee for nine years, is seeking relief for alleged discrimination. The class action lawsuit will be heard at the US District Court of New Jersey.

Katz has alleged that TCS favours Indian or South Asian individuals while making hiring-related considerations and it is biased towards them, Economic Times reported.

TCS is accused of "knowingly and intentionally creating and maintaining an overwhelmingly disproportionate workforce in the United States that consists of approximately 70 per cent South Asian employees".

Katz's complaint alleges that TCS has used discriminatory policies and practices related to hiring, staffing, promotion, and termination described herein that have resulted in a disparate impact on non-South Asians and non-Indians who, as a result, are disproportionately not hired, not selected for positions, not promoted, benched, and/or terminated.

The third instalment of Elon Musk's Twitter Files revealed what went behind the scenes during the moments of reckoning between January 6 to January 8, 2022, when former US president Donald Trump was deplatformed from Twitter. They reportedly issued "content rulings on the fly, often in minutes and based on guesses, gut calls, even Google searches, in cases involving the president (Donald Trump)."

Matt Taibbi revealed that there were multiple instances of conversations surrounding pro-Joe Biden tweets that said Trump "may try to steal the election". Such tweets were recognised by Twitter executives but were not flagged. The ‘new administration,’ says one executive, ‘will not be suspended by Twitter unless absolutely necessary’.

Trump election tweets row: Deamplification tool was rolled back after initial approval

According to documents, in December 2020 following Trump's defeat in the presidential election, Twitter rolled out a new "deamplification" tool that would be paired with a label to the president's claims about the election being stolen.

"Some executives wanted to use the new deamplification tool to silently limit Trump’s reach more right away," Taibbi wrote, noting they wanted to suppress a Trump tweet from Dec. 10. "However, in the end, the team had to use older, less aggressive labelling tools at least for that day, until the ‘L3 entities’ went live the following morning."

"The significance is that it shows that Twitter, in 2020 at least, was deploying a vast range of visible and invisible tools to rein in Trump’s engagement, long before J6. The ban will come after other avenues are exhausted," Taibbi tweeted. "In Twitter docs execs frequently refer to ‘bots,’ e.g. ‘let’s put a bot on that.’ A bot is just any automated heuristic moderation rule. It can be anything: every time a person in Brazil uses ‘green’ and ‘blob’ in the same sentence, action might be taken."

Twitter's new owner Elon Musk has been vocal about transparency related to Twitter's past and present actions when it comes to curating content on the platform, including censored content. Earlier this week, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey asked Elon Musk if Twitter's current goal is "transparency to build trust", why not they release everything without filter and let people judge for themselves, including all discussions around current and future actions.

"Make everything public now," Jack wrote by using the hashtag 'Twitter Files'.

Trump election tweets row: Deamplification tool was rolled back after initial approval According to documents, in December 2020 following Trump's defeat in the presidential election, Twitter rolled out a new "deamplification" tool that would be paired with a label to the president's claims about the election being stolen. "Some executives wanted to use the new deamplification tool to silently limit Trump’s reach more right away," Taibbi wrote, noting they wanted to suppress a Trump tweet from Dec. 10. "However, in the end, the team had to use older, less aggressive labelling tools at least for that day, until the ‘L3 entities’ went live the following morning." "The significance is that it shows that Twitter, in 2020 at least, was deploying a vast range of visible and invisible tools to rein in Trump’s engagement, long before J6. The ban will come after other avenues are exhausted," Taibbi tweeted. "In Twitter docs execs frequently refer to ‘bots,’ e.g. ‘let’s put a bot on that.’ A bot is just any automated heuristic moderation rule. It can be anything: every time a person in Brazil uses ‘green’ and ‘blob’ in the same sentence, action might be taken." Twitter's new owner Elon Musk has been vocal about transparency related to Twitter's past and present actions when it comes to curating content on the platform, including censored content. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. China's rights abuses in Tibet, Russia's use of Iranian drones draw fresh US sanctions

The United States recognised China's alleged human rights violations on Tibetan people and imposed fresh sanctions on Chinese Communist Party officials linked with reported persecution of people in Tibet and Xinjiang. The US also imposed sanctions on Russia's election commission and Iranian entities for allegedly supplying drones to help Russian assault in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (December 9) that Russia could include possibility of a pre-emptive strike in its military doctrine, in an apparent reference to nuclear attack. He was speaking with reporters in Kyrghyzstan. Meanwhile, the number of marine species threatened with extinction may even overwhelm Qatar's stadium 974 beyond its full capacity where FIFA Football World Cup is being held at present. More than 42,000 marine species may go extinct in the near future, according to the global conservation body, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The IUCN statement on Friday said that over 1,550 of the 17,903 marine animals and plants assessed are at risk of extinction, "with climate change impacting at least 41 per cent of threatened marine species".

Experts said that the IUCN Red List in terms of threat to marine life reflects humanity's continued overdrive to perceive oceans as inexhaustible sources of life.

“Most of the Earth’s biosphere, 99 per cent of all liveable space on our planet, is underwater. Humanity acts as if oceans were inexhaustible, capable of sustaining infinite harvest of algae, animals and plants for food and other products, able to transform vast quantities of sewage and other pollutants that we pour in coastal areas, and absorb the CO2 generated by land-use change and burning fossil fuel. This Red List update brings to light new evidence of the multiple interacting threats to declining life in the sea,” said Professor Jon Paul Rodríguez, Chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission in an official statement.

Bleaching caused by increased sea surface temperatures and excess antibiotics, fertilisers and sewage running into the sea have weakened corals and made them more susceptible to disease, the IUCN statement said. Overfishing around coral reefs has depleted the number of grazing fish, allowing algae to dominate and putting further pressure on corals, it added.
