Former US President Donald Trump has redirected his presidential campaign's focus towards Vice President Kamala Harris following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race to White House. Trump revived his derogatory nickname for Harris, calling her "Laffin' Kamala Harris".

But even as Trump hammers on with his campaign against Harris, he faces a key complication: a $5,000 check dated September 26, 2011, signed by Trump himself, and made out to "Attorney General Kamala D Harris."

Within hours of Biden's historic announcement of withdrawal from the presidential race on Sunday (July 21), Trump's 2011 donation to Harris began circulating on social media.

Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz from Florida posted a photo of the cheque on his X feed, captioning it: "Was a wise investment."

The Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Monday (July 22) that the online casinos catering to gamblers overseas have been banned, a major setback to the China-based gamblers operating Filipino online casinos.

The development comes just a day after Manila and Beijing reached an understanding on the "provisional arrangement" for resupply missions to Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, which China describes as South China Sea.

These operators, which primarily target Chinese gamblers, saw significant growth during the tenure of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Critics argue that the economic benefits of POGOs are outweighed by their reputational risks and criminal activities.

The ties between the two countries remain tense over Chinese show of maritime belligerence in and around the West Philippine Sea. On Sunday (July 21), more than a month after the China Coast Guard attacked Filipino soldiers during a resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal in mid-June 2024, it was announced that the two sides had "reached an understanding on the provisional arrangement" with China on these missions.

In this agreement, Beijing wanted Manila not to bring construction materials, and to give "advance notice and the right to inspect the ships."

Manila rejected these demands and the final arrangement did not include these provisions.

The anti-terror federal probe agency NIA has arrested one Baljeet Singh alias Rana Bhai alias Balli, a key aide of Canada-based designated individual Khalistani terrorist Lakhbir Singh Sandhu alias Landa, in connection with its probe into a major terrorist network case involving supply of deadly weapons, officials said on Friday.

The arrested accused Balli, hailing from Badwani district of Madhya Pradesh, was nabbed on Thursday from Punjab. He was found to be a major weapons supplier to the gangster syndicate working for Landa in Punja, the officials said.

As part of its investigation into the case, the NIA had earlier arrested one Gurpreet Singh Gopi, identified as an associate of Landa and of another Khalistani terrorist named Satnam Singh Satta, officials said.

UPSC chairman Manoj Soni has resigned citing personal reasons before the expiry of his tenure in May 2029, official sources said on Saturday.

His resignation is "not in any way connected to controversies and allegations surrounding the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) after probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar issue came to the fore," they said.

"The UPSC chairman had tendered his resignation citing personal reasons over a fortnight back. It is yet to be accepted," a source said.

Eminent educationist Mr Soni, 59, took over as a member of the Commission on June 28, 2017. He took oath as the UPSC chairman on May 16, 2023 and his term was to end on May 15, 2029.

Sources said Mr Soni was not keen on becoming the UPSC chairman and had requested to be relieved. However, his request was not accepted then, the sources said.

They said Mr Soni has now desired to devote more time to "socio-religious activities."

The development assumes significance as the UPSC on Friday said it has lodged a criminal case against Ms Khedkar for faking her identity to fraudulently avail attempts in the civil services examination beyond eligibility, and taken steps to debar her from future selections.

Since Ms Khedkar's case of misusing power and privileges came to the fore, social media has been abuzz with claims and counter-claims on the use of fake certificates by serving Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, among others.

Social media users have shared names, pictures, and other details of a few IAS and IPS officers, claiming they used bogus certificates to claim benefits available for those belonging to Other Backward Class (non-creamy layer) and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

Prior to his appointment in the UPSC, Mr Soni had served three terms as Vice-Chancellor.

These include two consecutive terms from August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2015 as VC of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU), Gujarat; and one term as VC of The Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) of Baroda from April 2005 to April 2008.

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Friday he had spoken by telephone with Ukraine leader Volodymyr Zelensky, and pledged to end the European country's war with Russia.

"I appreciate President Zelensky for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

"Both sides will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity."

The United States has provided tens of billions of dollars in military assistance for Kyiv since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 -- though a Trump victory in the November election would put Washington's continued support into question.

Trump's frequent praise for Putin and reluctance to outright criticize the Russian invasion have stirred concerns among Ukraine's allies that he would force the country into accepting partial defeat.

He has also repeatedly suggested backing away from NATO, even undermining the alliance's collective defense guarantee by saying he would encourage Russia to attack any members not who had not met their financial obligations.

Vance was one of the fiercest opponents of the approval of $61 billion in new military aid for Ukraine, which was stalled by Republican lawmakers for months earlier this year -- a time in which Russia made battlefield gains.

Trump told the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday that he would bring an end to raging international crises, saying he could "stop wars with a telephone call."

"I will end every single international crisis that the current administration has created, including the horrible war with Russia and Ukraine," Trump said, without elaborating on how.

Zelensky said earlier this week that he and Trump would "work together" if the Republican won the White House.

"I'm not worried about this," he told a news conference.

Zelensky declined to say whether he was worried about US President Joe Biden, who has been facing calls to drop his reelection campaign following a disastrous debate performance and questions over his health and mental acuity.

He did, however, acknowledge that "turbulence" during the US election cycle was having a "big impact" on his country.

Trump's relationship with Zelensky famously goes back to his time in the White House.

In 2019, Trump was impeached for withholding military aid to Ukraine while pressuring Zelensky to help him dig up dirt on his election rival Biden -- a race he went on to lose in 2020.

Vance was one of the fiercest opponents of the approval of $61 billion in new military aid for Ukraine, which was stalled by Republican lawmakers for months earlier this year -- a time in which Russia made battlefield gains. Trump told the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday that he would bring an end to raging international crises, saying he could "stop wars with a telephone call." "I will end every single international crisis that the current administration has created, including the horrible war with Russia and Ukraine," Trump said, without elaborating on how. Trump's relationship with Zelensky famously goes back to his time in the White House. In 2019, Trump was impeached for withholding military aid to Ukraine while pressuring Zelensky to help him dig up dirt on his election rival Biden -- a race he went on to lose in 2020. Trump speaks with Ukraine's Zelensky, pledges to 'end the war'

Iran can produce fissile material for use in a nuclear weapon within "one or two weeks," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday (July 20). The details were shared just weeks after election of moderate President Masoud Pezeshkian.

While Pezeshkian has said he wants to end Iran's economic isolation and that he stands for reviving the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and global powers, Blinken disapproved Iranian president's assertion.

Blinken said that "what we have seen in the last weeks and months is an Iran that's actually moving forward" with its nuclear program.

In 2018, the United States under former President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal, which was designed to regulate Iran's atomic activities in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Speaking at an event Blinken blamed the collapse of the nuclear deal for the acceleration in Iran's capabilities.

"Instead of being at least a year away from having the breakout capacity of producing fissile material for a nuclear weapon, (Iran) is now probably one or two weeks away from doing that," Blinken said.

He added that Iran had not yet developed a nuclear weapon.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said last month that Iran is expanding its nuclear capacities. Tehran has already informed the agency that it was installing more cascades -- or series of centrifuges used in enrichment -- at nuclear facilities in Natanz and Fordow.

Iran is the only non-nuclear weapons state to enrich uranium to the high level of 60 per cent, just short of weapons-grade.

Following the US withdrawal, Iran has gradually broken away from its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal.

But Iran's acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri told CNN earlier this week that the country remains committed to the accord, known as the JCPOA.

"We are still a member of JCPOA. America has not yet been able to return to the JCPOA, so the goal we are pursuing is the revival of the 2015 agreement," he said adding "We are not looking for a new agreement."
