While lamenting its economy which is in shambles, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that 'East Pakistan', present-day Bangladesh, was perceived as a 'burden' on the nation's shoulders, however, it is no more a case as the country has now achieved strides in economic growth. In a thought-provoking remark, he also expressed a sense of shame as Bangladesh within nearly 50 years of its independence in 1971 got ahead of Pakistan in terms of its GDP per capita. In 2016, Bangladesh passed Pakistan for the first time with $1,659 GDP per capita compared to Pakistan's $1,468. Since then, Bangladesh has kept its lead. In 2023, Pakistan's GDP per capita income was $1,471, while Bangladesh's was $2,528. <p>Toomaj Salehi, known for his protest songs, expressed support for the widespread agitation ignited by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman who died in police custody over alleged flouting of the hijab rules. The uproar surrounding Amini's arrest and demise reverberated&nbsp;domestically and internationally,&nbsp;triggering&nbsp;reactions from various quarters.</p>

<p>Detained in October 2022 for endorsing the nationwide protests, Salehi had been released on bail but was rearrested later.</p>

<p>Previously sentenced to six years and three months in prison, Salehi had managed to avoid a death sentence following a Supreme Court ruling that overturned his initial conviction which cited multiple charges including "corruption on earth."</p>

<p>However, despite the Supreme Court's decision, Branch One of the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan upheld the death penalty against Salehi while defying the higher court's ruling, according to the rapper's lawyer Amir Raisian.</p>

<p>Reuters has, however, reported that the Iranian judiciary has yet to confirm the sentence. Notably, Salehi has a 20-day window to appeal the verdict. "We will definitely appeal this verdict," assured Salehi's lawyer.</p>
