How Crucial is Psychological Care for Astronauts

Being an astronaut is not easy. It’s mentally draining as astronauts spend months in space and face lack of sleep, high workload, no access to natural light, separation from loved ones, and many other stress factors.

A prolonged lack of sleep coupled with a high workload can cause depression in astronauts which further affects their performance on missions.

What Has Been Done to Provide Psychological Care?

Space agencies around the world give great importance to the psychological care of astronauts. NASA, for example, has a Behavioural Health and Performance (BHP) team that conducts research to better understand the psychological and behavioural responses to spaceflight. It develops and tests interventions that lead to better adaptation and performance.

NASA gives extensive training to astronauts to help them apply self-assessment tools and treatments for maintaining their behavioural health. In-mission support, such as care packages, teleconferences with a psychologist, and journaling, help astronauts maintain motivation and boost their morale.

What Happens in the Universe in the Blink of an Eye?

Human adults blink approximately 12 times per minute and one blink lasts about 1/3 second. Within this short time frame, a lot of things happen in the Universe. Here's a look at some of these events.

Light Travels around Earth's Circumference Twice

As per prominent astronomy YouTube AstroKobi, in the time it takes us to blink once, light travels around the Earth's circumference twice.

Within 1/3 second, 10,000 new stars come into existence through the observable universe, Astrokobi states. Meanwhile, 300 stars die in supernova explosions within this period.

50 Black Holes formed in the Blink of an Eye

You read that right, 50 black holes are formed in the blink of an eye.

Our galaxy, the Milky Way travels 250 kilometres through space in 1/3 second.

United States (US) Vice President Kamala Harris said on Sunday (Mar 24) that Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip's Rafah would be a huge mistake. “We have been clear in multiple conversations and in every way that any major military operation in Rafah would be a huge mistake," Vice President Harris told ABC News.

On being asked whether there would be consequences of the Rafah offensive, Harris said, "I am ruling out nothing." "Let me tell you something: I have studied the maps. There's nowhere for those folks to go. And we're looking at about a million and a half people in Rafah who are there because they were told to go there, most of them," she also told the American news network. 'Israel risks further global isolation if it attacks Rafah' Kamala Harris' remarks on Sunday came two days after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Israel risked further global isolation if it attacked Rafah. Blinken, who met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last Friday during his tour of the Middle East, told reporters, "We share Israel’s goal of defeating Hamas... though, a major military ground operation in Rafah is not the way to do it." "It risks killing more civilians, it risks wreaking greater havoc with the provision of humanitarian assistance, it risks further isolating Israel around the world and jeopardizing its long-term security and standing," Blinken added. "I also said that we have no way to defeat Hamas without going into Rafah and eliminating the rest of the battalions there. And I told him that I hope we will do it with the support of the US, but if we have to - we will do it alone," Netanyahu said in a video statement to reporters. (With inputs from agencies)

Nearby Star to Go Nova in 2024, Might be Visible to Unaided Eye

A star system, located around 3,000 light years away from Earth, might be visible to the unaided eye this year. According to NASA, this could be a once-in-a-lifetime viewing opportunity as the nova outburst only occurs about every 80 years.

NASA said that T Coronae Borealis, or T CrB, last exploded in 1946 and astronomers believe it will do so again between February and September this year.

T CrB, which is normally of magnitude +10 (far too dim to see with the unaided eye), will jump to magnitude +2 during the event. This will be of similar brightness to Polaris.

Once its brightness peaks, T CrB should be visible to the unaided eye for several days and just over a week with binoculars before it dims again, possibly for another 80 years.

Don't have Any Beef with the UFC: Conor McGregor

Former UFC double champion Conor McGregor is perhaps not on good terms with the MMA promotion. The Irishman fought last in 2021 against Dustin Poirier (United States) where he broke his leg.

After fully recovering from his injury, McGregor has been pushing the UFC for his return. And his request is justifiable as he brought global fame to the promotion. However, the UFC has not been able to give a concrete guarantee to the Irishman.

Despite McGregor and the UFC not being on the same page, the former double champion said he has no beef with the promotion. “There’s no beef. I’m happy where I’m at and I’m delighted where I’m at. Let’s go. I feel I’m in a great place,” he told sports journalist Ariel Hawani in a recent interview.

Though McGregor has said he has no beef with the UFC, he also made it clear that his future in the promotion was uncertain.
