Major General Aharon Haliva, the head of Israel’s military intelligence, quit on Monday (Apr 22) over the failure to prevent the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas which killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians. Israel responded with a large-scale offensive in the Gaza Strip which has reportedly killed more than 34,000 Palestinians so far.

Major General Haliva became the first senior Israeli figure to step down following the war. He said shortly after the attack in October last year that he shouldered the blame for not preventing the assault.

In a statement, the Israeli military said that the military chief of staff accepted Haliva’s request to resign and thanked him for his service. A report by the news agency Associated Press said that Haliva's resignation could set the stage for more of the country's top security brass to accept blame for not being able to prevent the attack and step down.
