The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has captured high-resolution images of Chandrayaan-3's lander Vikram, and the Pragyan rover resting on the Moon. Blog post on Moon and Beyond (a blog run by independent researcher Chandra) on Wednesday (May 1) said that the new images were captured on March 15. "Following a successful touchdown at ShivShakti Statio, the Vikram Lander from Chandrayaan-3 deployed its rover, Pragyan, to navigate the cratered lunar surface," the blog post said. "Equipped with integrated cameras, Pragyan transmitted video footage of its surroundings and commenced its research tasks, designated for a two-week exploration mission," it added. On August 25 last year, ISRO reported that Pragyan had covered a distance of eight meters shortly after deployment. By the conclusion of its mission, the rover had successfully traversed approximately 101 metres. Though the Indian space agency released images of Vikram lander on August 23, 2023, the exact location of Pragyan's final resting place remained unclear. "Today, for the first time, we can clearly see the little Pragyan positioned right beside Vikram," the post added. The high-resolution image captured on March 15 this year showed significantly greater detail than last year's image shared by ISRO. The latest image was obtained from a reduced altitude of approximately 65 kilometres, allowing for a resolution of about 17 cm, compared to the initial post-landing image captured at the regular altitude of 100 kilometres with a resolution of 26 cm. "The difference in resolution is markedly apparent when observing these two images side by side; details such as the crater contours are exceptionally visible," the post added. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will continue his stay in jail after a Supreme Court bench hearing his petition rose on Tuesday (May 7) without pronouncing an order granting interim bail to him.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will continue his stay in jail after a Supreme Court bench hearing his petition rose on Tuesday (May 7) without pronouncing an order granting interim bail to him. Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court bench heard Kejriwal's bail petition after the court said it was open to considering an interim bail for the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) national convener given the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the country. Earlier in the day, a Delhi court extended Kejriwal's custody in the case till May 20. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. A report by the news agency ANI said that the apex court deferred its verdict and is likely to hear his interim bail plea on Thursday (May 9) or next week. ‘Performing functions of CM while on interim bail may...’ The bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta said on Tuesday that Kejriwal performing the official functions of a chief minister while on interim bail might have a cascading effect. "Suppose we release you, and you are allowed to participate in elections, you will be performing official duties...it can have cascading effects...We make it clear, we don't want you to be performing official duties if we release you," the bench said, LiveLaw reported. 'Will not sign any official files if released...' Kejriwal then told the apex court that he was willing to furnish an undertaking to not "sign any official files" if released on interim bail. Senior lawyer AM Singhvi, appearing for the Delhi CM, told the court, "..he (Arvind Kejriwal) will not sign any files, with a condition that LG may not stop any work on the ground that I have not signed any file." Singhvi pointed out that Kejriwal was not a habitual offender and it was not that the Supreme Court would be "enlarging someone who is a threat to society." The ED, meanwhile, opposed the bail, saying that politicians could not be treated a class apart and that Kejriwal's case has to be treated on the same pedestal as that of a common citizen of the country. The bench then said that Kejriwal was the elected CM of Delhi, adding, "There are elections...These are extraordinary circumstances. He's not a habitual offender." Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED, objected to the Supreme Court hearing arguments on interim bail and said, "What example are we setting? Are other people less important than the chief minister?" "How can a chief minister be treated differently than an 'Aam Aadmi.' There can't be any deviation only because he is a chief minister," the SG added. "A politician has no special rights as compared to normal citizens. Should all MPs and MLAs facing prosecution be released on bail?" the ED asked. Delhi court extends Kejriwal's custody Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Tuesday extended Kejriwal's custody in the case till May 20. LiveLaw reported that Special judge Kaveri Baweja of Rouse Avenue Courts passed the order on the expiry of his judicial custody in the excise policy case. (With inputs from agencies)

Scientists from the world's leading universities have developed an all-in-one vaccine that they hope can protect humans against a broad range of coronaviruses, including ones that are yet to emerge.

Scientists from the world's leading universities have developed an all-in-one vaccine that they hope can protect humans against a broad range of coronaviruses, including ones that are yet to emerge. In a study published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology on Monday (May 6), scientists said that this vaccine works by training the body's immune system to recognise specific regions of eight different coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2 which caused the COVID-19 outbreak, and several that are currently circulating in bats and have potential to jump to humans and cause a pandemic. The study The new vaccine is based on a structure called a nanoparticle – a ball of proteins held together by incredibly strong interactions. Chains of different viral antigens are attached to this nanoparticle using a novel "protein superglue". Also read | AstraZeneca Covid vaccine: Court case, rare side effects, admission of guilt, and more. All you need to know Multiple antigens are included in these chains, which trains the immune system to target specific regions shared across a broad range of coronaviruses. "Here, we produce quartets of linked receptor-binding domains (RBDs) from a panel of SARS-like betacoronaviruses, coupled to a computationally designed nanocage through SpyTag/SpyCatcher links," the study said. "These Quartet Nanocages, possessing a branched morphology, induce a high level of neutralising antibodies against several different coronaviruses, including against viruses not represented in the vaccine. Equivalent antibody responses are raised to RBDs close to the nanocage or at the tips of the nanoparticle’s branches," it added. The study also said that in animals primed with SARS-CoV-2 spike, boost immunisations with Quartet Nanocages increased the strength and breadth of an otherwise narrow immune response. 'Don't have to wait for new coronaviruses to emerge' Rory Hills from the University of Cambridge's pharmacology department and the study's first author said that the focus has been to create a vaccine that would protect people "against the next coronavirus pandemic, and have it ready before the pandemic has even started." “We’ve created a vaccine that provides protection against a broad range of different coronaviruses – including ones we don’t even know about yet,” Hills said. Also watch | COVID-19 pandemic anniversary: How a virus led to collapse of global health system | WION Decodes × Meanwhile, the study's senior author Professor Mark Howarth said, "We don’t have to wait for new coronaviruses to emerge. We know enough about coronaviruses, and different immune responses to them, that we can get going with building protective vaccines against unknown coronaviruses now." Professor Howarth, who is also with Cambridge's pharmacology department, said that while scientists did a great job in quickly producing an extremely effective COVID-19 vaccine during the last pandemic, the world still had a massive crisis with a huge number of deaths. "We need to work out how we can do even better than that in the future, and a powerful component of that is starting to build the vaccines in advance,” Howarth added. (With inputs from agencies)

The Constitutional Court in Prague, which is the highest court of the Czech Republic, halted the extradition of Indian Nikhil Gupta to the United States (US), according to a report by The Indian Express on Tuesday (May 7).

The Constitutional Court in Prague, which is the highest court of the Czech Republic, halted the extradition of Indian Nikhil Gupta to the United States (US), according to a report by The Indian Express on Tuesday (May 7). Gupta was indicted by Washington for plotting to kill Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Speaking to The Indian Express, Czech Justice Ministry spokesperson Markéta Andrová said that the court's decision meant the justice minister could not decide on extradition or refusal until the Constitutional Court decided on the merits of the complaint filed by Gupta. On January 19, Gupta challenged the decisions of the municipal court in Prague (dated November 23, 2023), and the high court in the capital city (dated January 8 this year). Both the courts ruled positively on the admissibility of the US request for his extradition, the report said. Also read | India slams Washington Post report linking RAW officer to alleged Pannun murder plot Alluding to the involvement of state actors, Gupta’s lawyer was learnt to have argued that the municipal court and the high court did not properly assess the political nature of the act. Eleven days later (on January 30), the top court said that Gupta’s extradition to the US for criminal prosecution would result in disproportionately greater harm to the man than anyone else. These developments come a week after the US reiterated its stance on seeking accountability from the Indian government about the ongoing investigation into the murder plot of Pannun. Addressing a briefing at the White House on April 30, State Department's Principal Deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said that there is an ongoing dialogue and that the US expects accountability from the Indian authorities. Also watch | India, US working jointly to probe bid to kill Pannun: US Ambassador Garcetti × "So we continue to expect accountability from the Government of India based on the results of the Indian inquiry committee's work, and we are regularly working with them and inquiring for additional updates," Patel said on being asked about a report by The Washington Post which named an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) official as being involved in the alleged plot. "We'll also continue to raise our concerns directly with the Indian government at senior levels...," Patel added. The claims made in the Washington Post report were dismissed by New Delhi. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said last week that the report was "speculative and irresponsible". "The report in question makes unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations on a serious matter. There is an ongoing investigation of the High-Level Committee set up by the Government of India to look into the security concerns shared by the US government on networks of organised criminals, terrorists and others," Jaiswal said. "Speculative and irresponsible comments on it are not helpful," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Hopes for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip are dimming but a fresh round of negotiations will take place in Qatar on Monday (May 6). Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Bill Burns headed to Qatar's capital Doha for "emergency" discussions on mediation in the war. Burns would continue to stay in Doha as the truce talks drag on and will head to Israel by Tuesday for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A Hamas official, meanwhile, said that the group's delegation for truce talks was headed to Doha for consultations. On Sunday, the ceasefire talks in Egypt's Cairo failed to produce a breakthrough. Hamas reiterated that it would not accept a truce that did not completely end the war, accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of "personally hindering" a deal. Also read: Israel shuts key border crossing for aid trucks as Hamas fires rockets Prime Minister Netanyahu, meanwhile, hardened his rejection of Hamas' demands for an end to the Gaza war in exchange for the freeing of hostages, saying on Sunday that would keep the Palestinian militant group in power and pose a threat to Israel. These developments came as 16 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip's Rafah city. The airstrikes came hours after Hamas claimed responsibility for a rocket attack near Rafah which Israeli said killed three IDF soldiers and injured 11 more. Also read | Dozens of Jewish sites receive disturbing bomb threat emails in NYC, says report The conflict between Israel and Hamas started in October last year after Hamas launched an assault in southern Israel in which 1,200 people were killed and 252 taken hostage. Israel responded by striking back hard at the Gaza Strip, killing more than 34,000 people. With the outcome of Monday's truce talks unknown, here's a look at the latest updates: US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the phone on Monday evening, according to Israeli media. The conversation reportedly lasted half an hour. Gaza officials said Israeli jets have targeted at least two areas in Rafah that the IDF had ordered to be evacuated. "The areas targeted by the Israeli occupation are near the perimeter of Gaza International Airport, the Al-Shuka area, the Abu Halawa area, the Salaheddin street area and the Salam neighbourhood," Gaza civil defence agency spokesman Ahmed Ridwan was quoted as saying by AFP. Another aid official confirmed the strikes. Egypt has reportedly raised its military’s level of preparedness in northern Sinai, which borders the Gaza Strip. EU’s top diplomat Josep Borrell on Monday urged Israel to “renounce” the idea of invading Rafah. In a post on social media, he called on both sides to implement UN security council resolution 2728, which demanded “an immediate ceasefire … by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire” and also called for “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages” and “the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale”. Hezbollah said it fired "dozens of Katyusha rockets" at an Israeli base in the occupied Golan Heights on Monday in retaliation for a strike in Lebanon's east. Hezbollah fighters launched "dozens of Katyusha rockets" targeting "the headquarters of the Golan Division... at Nafah base", the group said in a statement. The Israeli military on Monday began evacuating Palestinian civilians from eastern Rafah ahead of a threatened assault on the southern Gazan city. The military said that around 100,000 people were being evacuated. According to local media reports, the evacuations were now focused on a few peripheral districts of Rafah from which evacuees would be directed to tent cities in nearby Khan Younis and Al Muwassi. The military said that the east Rafah evacuation was a "limited scope operation," as it began to drop flyers, send text messages, and make phone calls to Palestinians with instructions on the zones that needed to be evacuated, and which routes to take to a designated humanitarian zone. Hamas called the evacuation plan a “dangerous escalation that will have consequences.” At least 16 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip's Rafah, AFP reported on Monday citing medics and first responders. The airstrikes came hours after Hamas claimed responsibility for a rocket attack near Rafah which Israeli said killed three Israeli soldiers and injured 11 more. The Israeli military confirmed the counter-strike, saying it struck the launcher from which the Hamas projectiles were fired, as well as a nearby "military structure." The military said 10 projectiles were launched from Rafah in southern Gaza towards the area of Kerem Shalom, which it said was now closed. Mexican authorities confirmed on Sunday (May 5) that the families of one American and two Australian surfers who went missing in Baja California on April 26 have identified their bodies, the news agency Reuters reported. The families of Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson and their American friend Carter Rhoad were in Mexico to identify them. The dead bodies of the surfers were found in a well with gunshot wounds to the head in what authorities are treating as a murder investigation. Authorities suspect it was a tyre robbery bid that had gone awry. Earlier, Baja California's state Attorney General Maria Elena Andrade had said that if the families could identify the bodies, it would void the need for DNA tests. How did the surfers go missing? Callum, Jake, and Carter went missing while on a vacation surfing near the popular tourist town of Ensenada, about 90 minutes south of the US-Mexico border on the Pacific coast. The three surfers were last seen on April 27 and reported missing a couple of days later, when authorities launched a multi-day search with the help of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). They were believed to have been killed during a botched theft of their pick-up truck. Prosecutors earlier said that three suspects, two men, and one woman, have been detained on suspicion of involvement in the case. One of those arrested has a history of violence, drug dealing, and robbery, according to officials. A preliminary hypothesis said that the arrested individuals attempted to carjack the foreigners and when the surfers resisted they were shot and their bodies dumped in a well. 'Bodies found in advanced state of decomposition' On Saturday, Andrade said that the bodies were found in an advanced state of decomposition at the bottom of the well. Reuters reported that all three bodies had a shot in the head. Baja California is one of Mexico's most violent states, although the Ensenada area is considered safer. (With inputs from agencies)

A five-year-old boy died when he was swept away by floodwaters in the US state of Texas. Storms in Texas brought additional rain to Houston on Sunday (May 5) where hundreds of people have been rescued from inundated homes and roads. Additional rain was also seen in other cities in the state. A report by the news agency Associated Press on Monday said that the boy from Forth Worth's Johnson County died when he was swept away after the vehicle he was riding in got stuck in swift-moving water near the community of Lillian. According to Johnson County Emergency Management director Jamie Moore, the child and two adults were trying to get to dry ground when they were swept away. Moore said that the adults were rescued and taken to a hospital, but the child was found dead in the floodwaters. On Sunday, National Weather Service meteorologist Jimmy Fowler said that over the last week, areas near Lake Livingston, located northeast of Houston, have gotten upwards of 23 inches of rain. Areas in northeastern Harris County, the nation’s third-largest county that includes Houston, witnessed six inches to almost 17 inches of rain in that same period, Fowler added. Scattered showers in the Houston area on Sunday brought light to moderate rainfall, he further said and pointed out that no further rain was expected from Monday onwards. Houston is one of the most flood-prone metro areas in the US. During the weekend, a wide region was swamped from the city to rural East Texas, the Associated Press reported. So far, authorities in Houston have not reported any deaths or injuries. (With inputs from agencies)

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has spotted winds blowing at unprecedented speeds on the exoplanet WASP-43b, which is around 283 light-years away from Earth.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has spotted winds blowing at unprecedented speeds on the exoplanet WASP-43b, which is around 283 light-years away from Earth. The exoplanet's one side permanently faces its sun and the other is cloaked in eternal night. WASP-43b is composed primarily of hydrogen and helium and is significantly hotter than any gas giant in the solar system, due to its closeness to its host star, which it orbits once every 19 Earth hours. According to a report by Live Science, this proximity meant that WASP-43b was also tidally locked to its star. The report said that researchers discovered that this tidal lock permanently heats one side of the planet to temperatures around 1,260 degrees Celsius. A change in temperature that drives fierce winds In a recent study, scientists discovered that the temperature difference between the day and night side drove fierce winds that could reach speeds of up to 9,000 km/hour. In a statement, Taylor Bell, a researcher from the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute and the study's lead author said, "With Hubble, we could clearly see that there is water vapour on the dayside. Both Hubble and Spitzer suggested there might be clouds on the nightside." Also read | James Webb captures stunning Horsehead Nebula as ‘you’ve never seen it before...’ "But we needed more precise measurements from Webb to really begin mapping the temperature, cloud cover, winds, and more detailed atmospheric composition all the way around the planet,” Bell added. The scientists used Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) to measure light from the WASP-43 system every 10 seconds for more than 24 hours. “By observing over an entire orbit, we were able to calculate the temperature of different sides of the planet as they rotate into view,” Bell said. "The measurements show that the dayside has an average temperature of nearly 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit (1,250 degrees Celsius) – hot enough to forge iron. Meanwhile, the nightside is significantly cooler at 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit (600 degrees Celsius)," the statement said. "The data also helps locate the hottest spot on the planet (the “hotspot”), which is shifted slightly eastward from the point that receives the most stellar radiation, where the star is highest in the planet’s sky. This shift occurs because of supersonic winds, which move heated air eastward," it added. Exoplanet discovered in 2011 WASP-43b was discovered in 2011. According to NASA, WASP-43b orbits a K-type star. The exoplanet was initially studied by the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes. However, the JWST has now captured the finer details of its atmosphere. (With inputs from agencies)
