<p>Many Americans were concerned that if Trump would implement all of his campaign promises, the country would face a political divide that would be difficult to heal for years. The Hispanics, African-Americans, Americans of Muslim faith, immigrants, temporary workers and poor white workers were particularly worried about a White House under the Trump Administration.</p>

<p>Uncertainty engulfed the world about the probable US approach to issues of peace, security and development. Both American allies and adversaries faced difficulty in communicating with the new US President. It was because Donald Trump, the presidential candidate, had hardly any positive message for the allies and the perceived US adversaries knew that a Trump Administration would more likely escalate the conflict with them than seek resolution of differences.</p>

<p>One year after Trump became President, the United States remains socially and politically divided from within. An intense cold war is ravaging on between Trump and the mainstream media. The minorities, immigrants and the poor appear disappointed over Trumpean policies. Many believe that President Trump suffers from personality problem, though the President declares himself to be a &ldquo;stable genius.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>

<p>In foreign affairs, there is still no clarity over his policy approaches and strategies. Analysts have no clue about the direction of US foreign policy and international engagements. Critics in the US and abroad have kept bombarding the Trump Administration for its frequent shift in policy statements and ambiguous policies over North Korea, China, Iran, NATO, NAFTA etc. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Amidst all these complexities and uncertainties, Trump&#39;s followers and admirers have a different take. He is regarded as a leader who has delivered what he promised. He promised to build a wall along the US-Mexican border and seems determined to do so. The US Congress has also authorised a few billion dollars for this purpose.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Secondly, he was a critic of the Iran nuclear deal, calling it a &ldquo;bad deal&rdquo;. He has stuck to his position and not extended his support to it; and, in fact, has sought to isolate the Iranian regime further.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Third, he was dead opposed to the way his predecessors&nbsp;handled the North Korean nuclear programme. He took a very hostile and aggressive stance on the &ldquo;little rocket man&rdquo; of Pyongyang, threatening to demonstrate &ldquo;fire and fury&rdquo; against North Korea and, perhaps, take&nbsp;some credit for Pyongyang&rsquo;s decision to send the athletes to join the Olympics along with South Korean counterparts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fourth, he takes credit for arm-twisting military allies in the Atlantic and the Pacific to pay more for the common defense. He also spoke of his secret plan to eliminate the ISIS during the election campaign and now has been credited for the steady demise of ISIS influence in the Middle East.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>He promised to back Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and did so in the face of massive international opposition. Seventh, he criticised Obama for declaring withdrawal deadlines for US military from Afghanistan and, thus, empowering Taliban. Once in office, he reversed that policy, increased the troop&#39;s presence and showed determination to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the domestic arena, Trump Administration takes credit for the improvement in the employment situation, economic growth and for ensuring the passage of the massive tax reform legislation in about 30 years. His tightening of the immigration policy has brought cheers to a section of the American citizens who voted for him.</p>

<p>While Trump will remain a controversial figure in the US and elsewhere in the world, his approach towards India has been comparatively quite positive. First, there is no possibility of Trump backing the creation of a G2 world with China. Second, Trump&rsquo;s pressure on Pakistan through aid cutoff may have some positive impact in the region. Third, the chemistry between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi has been quite positive. Fourth, the National Security Strategy Report issued by the Trump Administration has elevated India&rsquo;s position as a great global power and has given the glimpse of its aspiration to deepen strategic and defense partnership with India for maintenance of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The strategic concept of Indo-Pacific replaces &ldquo;Asia-Pacific&rdquo; and it is very much in Indian interest. The decision of the Trump White House not to push for a revision of H1B visa rules has augured well for the positive trajectory of Indo-US bilateral relations in coming years.</p>

<p>However, both Prime Minister Modi and President Trump give priority of place to economic growth as an important dimension of national security and, thus, Indo-US differences over economic issues are bound to remain and create periodic irritation in bilateral ties.</p>

Generally, commentators, analysts and historians take some time before they discuss in detail issues related to the departing administration. There is a contrasting development this time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>First, the outcome of the 2016 presidential election is historical, as was the 2008 one when the American electorate chose for the first time an African-American as their president. In 2016, they chose a billionaire who is an outsider to the Republican Party, to the Beltway politics and who possesses zero experience in legislative politics, military service or to bureaucratic assignments.</p>

<p>Experts are quick to make an assessment of the African-American president&rsquo;s performance with an eye on the prevailing uncertainty over the future of their country under the new Trump administration.</p>

<p>Secondly, Obama himself decided to project his achievements in the light of challenges posed by Donald Trump to undo some of his signature policies, such as Affordable Care Act, Iran Nuclear Deal, employment generation to name some prominent ones.</p>

Assessing Obama era as Trump checks in

<p>American voters have overwhelmingly chosen Donald Trump as the country&rsquo;s 45<sup>th</sup> president. It is an unexpected victory. Many political analysts and opinion polls suggested that, despite ups and downs, Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party was on the lead and was thus expected to finally win in the close contest for the presidency.</p>

<p>Republican Party has been in disarray, symptomatic since the rise and spread of the Tea Party Movement. For last years the Democrats have been in the ruling the country from the White House. Secondly, the Republican Party&rsquo;s big wigs walked away from Donald Trump and sent repeated signals that he should expect no help from them in the election. Thirdly, Trump was not able to generate comparable amount of fund to run the election, unlike his main rival. Fourthly, Trump made numerous politically incorrect and socially unacceptable statements against women, physically challenged, undocumented workers from Latin America, African Americans, media houses and, above all, the Muslims.</p>

<p>It was clear that a person with little backing of his main political party, and without any credible administrative and political experience would not be able to garner enough votes to win the presidency. The party machine in the United States and the Washington establishment, controlled by the influential families in that country, would not allow an outsider like Trump to enter the ring. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>And yet, the American voters sprang a surprise&mdash;second time since 2008&mdash;and created history by choosing a casino owner and alleged tax evader as their country&rsquo;s commander-in-chief. The post facto analysis and deconstruction of Trump&rsquo;s statements apparently hurtful to many sections of the society can, however, make one understand why the citizens of the United States chose Trump over Hillary Clinton.</p>

<p>First of all, Trump made it clear multiple times that he cannot resort to political correctness in his campaign and he can relate to the common people in the country. He wanted to seek the support of those who have felt marginalised over the decades and have been left high and dry by the forces of globalisation championed by the successive administrations. He spoke a language that struck a cord the hearts of millions in the country. He spoke against free trade agreements, supported protectionist policies to generate jobs, promised job creation, and expressed his intense desire to fix a &ldquo;rigged system&rdquo; in the country.</p>

Many criticised him for making racial statements against Mexicans, but he soon met with the Mexican President that cleared misunderstanding.</p>

<p>While a large number of cabinet-ranking officials who served earlier Republican presidents expressed their doubt over trusting Trump with the country&rsquo;s nuclear buttons, Trump fought back by asking for explanations as to why the United States would keep subsidising the security of Japan, South Korea and many other countries without adequate financial contributions by them.</p>

<p>He vehemently challenged the Obama administration&rsquo;s soft nuclear deal with Iran, which, according to him, made Tehran richer and enabled Iran to keep the option of building the nuclear bomb after fifteen years. He lamented its adverse effect on America&rsquo;s trusted ally in the Middle East, Israel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Thirdly, the war weary American masses, fed up with the so-called war against Islamic extremists in Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa, took no objection to Trump&rsquo;s hardline position against prospective Muslim refugees or immigrants. Trump was aware that millions of Muslims are American citizens and some of them serve in government and military as well. He was not targeting them, but those who would try to emigrate from troubled spots in the Islamic World and some of whom could be sleeper cells.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>India need not worry at all about the Trump administration. While Hillary knew India too well, Trump has said in so many words his desire to work with India. He would inherit a foreign policy marked by serious cold confrontation between the United States and China, difficult US-Russian differences over events in Eurasia and the Middle East, slow recovery of the economies of Washington&rsquo;s Trans-Atlantic partners, the continuing US boots on Afghan soil and the ravaging war against ISIS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India is actually a positive story for the United States. Its economy growing fast, its market is expanding, Indo-US strategic partnership is robust and the two countries would have to do a lot together to shape the order in the Indo-Pacific region. The point where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump need to converge is the ways and means of handling terrorism. India continues to be a victim of cross-border terrorism and the US has continued to wage war against terrorism. What is required is more coordination, better cooperation and strong determination.&nbsp;</p>

American voters have overwhelmingly chosen Donald Trump as the country’s 45th president. It is an unexpected victory. Many political analysts and opinion polls suggested that, despite ups and downs, Hillary Clinton of the Democratic Party was on the lead and was thus expected to finally win in the close contest for the presidency. Republican Party has been in disarray, symptomatic since the rise and spread of the Tea Party Movement. For last years the Democrats have been in the ruling the country from the White House. Secondly, the Republican Party’s big wigs walked away from Donald Trump and sent repeated signals that he should expect no help from them in the election. Thirdly, Trump was not able to generate comparable amount of fund to run the election, unlike his main rival. Fourthly, Trump made numerous politically incorrect and socially unacceptable statements against women, physically challenged, undocumented workers from Latin America, African Americans, media houses and, above all, the Muslims. It was clear that a person with little backing of his main political party, and without any credible administrative and political experience would not be able to garner enough votes to win the presidency. The party machine in the United States and the Washington establishment, controlled by the influential families in that country, would not allow an outsider like Trump to enter the ring. And yet, the American voters sprang a surprise—second time since 2008—and created history by choosing a casino owner and alleged tax evader as their country’s commander-in-chief. The post facto analysis and deconstruction of Trump’s statements apparently hurtful to many sections of the society can, however, make one understand why the citizens of the United States chose Trump over Hillary Clinton. First of all, Trump made it clear multiple times that he cannot resort to political correctness in his campaign and he can relate to the common people in the country. He wanted to seek the support of those who have felt marginalised over the decades and have been left high and dry by the forces of globalisation championed by the successive administrations. He spoke a language that struck a cord the hearts of millions in the country. He spoke against free trade agreements, supported protectionist policies to generate jobs, promised job creation, and expressed his intense desire to fix a “rigged system” in the country. He wanted to seek the support of those who have felt marginalised over the decades and have been left high and dry by the forces of globalisation × Secondly, Trump’s idea of constructing a wall along the US-Mexican border quickly found support among those who had lost their jobs to Mexican low paid workers. Many criticised him for making racial statements against Mexicans, but he soon met with the Mexican President that cleared misunderstanding. While a large number of cabinet-ranking officials who served earlier Republican presidents expressed their doubt over trusting Trump with the country’s nuclear buttons, Trump fought back by asking for explanations as to why the United States would keep subsidising the security of Japan, South Korea and many other countries without adequate financial contributions by them. He vehemently challenged the Obama administration’s soft nuclear deal with Iran, which, according to him, made Tehran richer and enabled Iran to keep the option of building the nuclear bomb after fifteen years. He lamented its adverse effect on America’s trusted ally in the Middle East, Israel. Thirdly, the war weary American masses, fed up with the so-called war against Islamic extremists in Afghanistan, Middle East and Africa, took no objection to Trump’s hardline position against prospective Muslim refugees or immigrants. Trump was aware that millions of Muslims are American citizens and some of them serve in government and military as well. He was not targeting them, but those who would try to emigrate from troubled spots in the Islamic World and some of whom could be sleeper cells.
