The findings have prompted Mexico’s health ministry in conjunction with the National Commission on Mental Health and Addictions to issue an alert for health personnel and first responders in the country’s border cities for “possible adulteration of heroin and fentanyl with xylazine.”

Since xylazine is a sedative it does not have the same effects as an opioid but it can make opioid overdose reversal treatments less effective. Therefore, it not only raises the risk of overdose-related deaths but can also cause severe skin abscesses that can be life-threatening.

Out of the 300 samples of drug residues tested in the cities of Tijuana and Mexicali, xylazine was found in 35 residues of heroin mixed with fentanyl and 26 fentanyl residues.&nbsp;

It is also worth noting that the study had set out to identify adulterants in drugs and just happened to stumble upon xylazine.&nbsp;

“We were surprised to find xylazine,” said Clara Fleiz from Mexico’s National Institute of Psychiatry and the study’s lead author, as quoted by Reuters.

The country’s alarm over xylazine also comes as consumption of fentanyl is reportedly increasing within its borders.

<h2>Mexico is running short of fentanyl</h2>

On Friday, Mexico reported yet another drug-related problem, as the country which is the leading producer of illicit fentanyl, can’t get enough for medical use. This is despite Mexican cartels reportedly pumping out tonens of the illicit narcotic.

However, the study by Mexico’s National Commission on Mental Health and Addictions did not give any reason for the shortage of fentanyl, which is needed for anaesthesia in hospitals, but claimed that it is a worldwide problem.&nbsp;

The study has also attributed this shortage to the US saying that the “excessive use of opiates in recent decades in the United States has had important repercussions on consumption and supply in Mexico.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, with the lack of availability of morphine and fentanyl, anesthesiologists in Mexico have been forced to acquire their own supplies and even administer multiple doses from a single vial to conserve.&nbsp;

To begin with, the changes include a hike in the minimum income threshold required to bring family members to the country as dependents.

The minimum income necessary for a work visa surged from £18,600 (about ₹19 lakh) annually to £29,000 (nearly ₹30 lakh). An increase of about 55 per cent&nbsp;in income threshold is a big shift.&nbsp;

Miral Shah, a dentist in the UK, told WION, “As a working professional, the increased minimum income requirement for bringing dependents on a work visa will certainly impact me. It raises the financial bar for us. While I understand the need for such measures, it adds pressure, especially considering the rising cost of living."

He said that balancing career growth and family needs becomes&nbsp;even more challenging with these changes and it might end up discouraging talented professionals from considering opportunities here due to the financial strain it imposes.

Shah also shared concerns with WION about the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) which has been tasked with evaluating the Graduate Route visa - also known as Post Study Work (PSW) visas.

PSW visas enable international students to remain in the UK for two years post-graduation to seek employment without sponsorship requirements.

"The potential discontinuation of the Graduate Route visa could pose a significant hurdle for international students planning their careers in the UK. This visa provides invaluable time for graduates to seek employment opportunities without the pressure of sponsorship," Shah told WION.&nbsp;

"Without it, international students may face limited options and increased uncertainty in their career paths, which could ultimately deter them from studying in the UK. It's crucial that the MAC considers the long-term implications of such a decision on both students and the higher education&nbsp;sector," Shah added.&nbsp;

Saima Shaikh, a recent graduate from Bournemouth University, spoke of the challenges these changes will bring.

These changes sometimes heighten feelings of isolation and&nbsp;homesickness," Shaikh shared with WION.&nbsp;

But it's not just the professionals feeling the pinch.

In January, UK barred people on student visas from bringing dependents to the country.&nbsp;Alisha Mehta, currently pursuing her studies at Bournemouth University, empathised with those directly affected.

But let me assure you that we are confident that there is no ongoing risk and we are dealing with one person who is now deceased,” she said.

“There were four female women deceased in the shopping centre and one male and subsequently another female passed away in hospital, taking it to a total of six plus the death of the offender,” she added.

The assailant who claimed the lives of six in a knife rampage in Sydney's shopping centre&nbsp; in the beachside suburb of Bondi was shot dead by the police.

He then appreciated the “heroism” of ordinary Australians who exhibited bravery in times of danger.

"Today Bondi Junction was the scene of shocking violence. But it was also witness to the humanity and the heroism of our fellow Australians, our brave police, our first responders, and of course, everyday people who could never have imagined that they would face such a moment," the Australian PM said.

Police have busted an international gang involved in swindling people of 645 million euros ($686.41 million)&nbsp;across 35 countries.

They defrauded people through a&nbsp;fake investment opportunity centred around medicinal cannabis plants.

The gang&nbsp;had a whole marketing campaign going on, even attending international cannabis fairs to lure victims. But thanks to a collaboration between the Spanish National Police, Europol, and forces from five other countries, their deceiving days are over.

Nine suspects, who have not been named, were detained on April 11 on suspicion of fraud in Spain, Britain, Germany, Latvia, Poland, Italy and the Dominican Republic.

The company, JuicyFields, lured victims with a fake business model. They claimed to use investors' money to grow cannabis plants, but Spanish police say it was all a lie.&nbsp;

Instead, JuicyFields was just a fraud scheme, using new investors' cash to pay off earlier ones. It all came crashing down when they couldn't keep up and stopped people from accessing their money.

A joint effort by police forces from several countries, including Spain and UK, shut down JuicyFields.&nbsp;

The fraudsters promised victims profits of between 70 per cent and 168 per cent per year, depending on the species of cannabis in which they invested.

The British National Crime Agency (NCA), which took part in the operation, said 180,000 people invested funds in “JuicyFields” which it called "a notorious and elaborate Ponzi fraud scheme".

The NCA also said that a 42-year-old man appeared in a London court on April 11 for the start of extradition proceedings.

From luxury cars to hotel parties and music videos were used in an advertising campaign to promote the scheme, police said. The victims were taken to legal cannabis plantations which were involved in the scam.

Police carried out raids in 2022 but did not say if any suspects have been charged with any offences.

Police froze bank accounts containing 58,600.00 euros and 116,300.00 euros in crypto currencies, and 106,000 euros in cash was recovered. Properties worth 2.6 billion euros were seized.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) pinpointed the seizure location 50 nautical miles northeast of Fujairah, a key port city in the UAE bordering the Strait. While details remain unclear, a British maritime security firm, Ambrey, confirmed a "boarding" incident at the same location.

The Republicans were quick to point at the financial records and call Democrats “corrupt” and hypocrites. “If these corrupt Democrats didn’t have HYPOCRISY, they’d have NOTHING!” the Republican National Committee said, in a post on X, on Friday (Apr 12).&nbsp;

However, the use of the party’s funds to cover Biden’s legal bills is not without precedent and falls within the bounds of campaign finance law.&nbsp;

The money for Biden’s legal team comes from the DNC’s legal account, which is primarily funded by major donors who have already met contribution limits, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of last year, the DNC paid nearly $905,000 to the firm Hemenway &amp; Barnes whose attorney, Jennifer Miller was identified in Hur’s final report as a “personal counsel” for the president.&nbsp;

It is also worth noting that while the national party had been paying the firm since 2020, the amount rose last year.&nbsp;

However, it is still far from the more than $100 million in donor money that the former president’s campaign has used to deal with his many legal woes as he faces 88 criminal charges in four separate indictments.&nbsp;
