<p>Following the economic collapse of 2019, most cities in Lebanon are powered by more than 8,000 diesel generators. And now, an ‘alarming’ study has linked the rising air pollution in the cities to the increasing cancer rates among the general population. Owing to the massive pollution, it has become commonplace for Beirut residents to deal with thick clouds of smog, always hanging over the skyline.</p>

<p>The research, conducted by scientists at the American University of Beirut (AUB), found that the risk of developing cancer in the capital city has increased by two times over the past five years. “The results are alarming,” says Najat Saliba, an atmospheric chemist who led the study.</p>

<h2><strong>Level of pollution</strong></h2>

<p>According to the data collected by the AUB researchers, pollution in Beirut has doubled since 2017. The PM2.5 level generally hovers around 60 micrograms a cubic metre, four times what the World Health Organization recommends for healthy breathing.</p>

<p>The researchers add that the relation between the increasing pollution and cancer rates is quite obvious.</p>

<p>“We calculate the cancer risk based on the carcinogen materials emitted from diesel generators, some of which are classified as category 1A carcinogens,” said Najat.</p>

<p>Hani Nassar, who runs a cancer support organisation in the country, says money is also a major problem for cancer patients. The $6,000/month medication for a society where most individuals earn $150 is a back-breaking affair.</p>

<p>“We have a lot of cancer patients who have not even begun any treatment,” says Hani. “They just end up saying, ‘OK, I will die – I don’t want to deprive my family of our house, our car, etc., just to pay for this’,” he adds.</p>

<p>It has been reported that a whopping 4,600 Chinese nationals have arrived in the province, located on the northern tip of Luzon Island facing Taiwan, and enrolled into private universities.</p>

<p>Jonathan Malaya, assistant director general of the National Security Council, said Saturday (Apr 20), “Our intelligence units have been assigned to take a look at the situation there. Is this a case of a national security threat, or is this just a case of people wanting to study in the Philippines?”</p>

<p>Some hawkish congressmen have termed the trend as a “creeping invasion”, with Congressman Robert Ace Barbers emerging as the strongest voice.</p>

<p>Barbers said the motive of the Chinese students was not clear and they could be “spies or members of sleeper cells sent to gather intelligence.”</p>

<p>“Why are they all there in Cagayan close to the EDCA site? Why are there so many enrolling there? Isn’t it that if you want to pursue a master’s degree, you would go to a big university overseas?” Barbers said. “Is there really that much interest to get a master’s degree from the Philippines?”</p>

Australian MP responds to Musk's 'global censorship' remark, calls X a 'factory for trolls and misinformation'

<p>British police on Monday (Apr 22)&nbsp;charged two men with spying for China, including one reported to have worked as a researcher in Britain's parliament for a prominent lawmaker from the governing Conservative Party.</p>

<p>Anxiety has mounted across Europe about China’s alleged espionage activity and Britain has become increasingly vocal about its concerns in recent months.</p>

<p>The two men, aged 32 and 29, were charged with providing prejudicial information to China in breach of the Official Secrets Act, and will appear in court on Friday.</p>

<p>"This has been an extremely complex investigation into what are very serious allegations," Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Counter Terrorism Command at the Metropolitan Police, said.</p>

<p>A Christopher Cash was listed on parliamentary documents from early 2023 as working for Kearns.</p>

<p>In September, a lawyer for the arrested man issued a statement denying the accusations of spying without confirming the identity of their client. The same legal firm did not provide a statement on Monday when contacted by Reuters.</p>

<p>Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has said that it is wrong to impose a 'cannibalism' label on his country and appealed to the United States to clear up World War II's remnants which are littered across the Pacific, after President Joe Biden spoke about his missing serviceman uncle being eaten by cannibals.</p>

<p>Israeli missiles apparently hit a site in Iran, US-based media reported late on Thursday (Apr 18), now details have emerged which revealed the type of missile used by Israel, the exact target, and also the possible intention.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Explosions were heard close to a major Iranian military airbase near Isfahan after the alleged strike by Israel, which was basically a signal to tell the world that it could target sites deep inside Iran, after bypassing defence systems.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Previous reports have noted that Isfahan, which is an Iranian military airbase, houses squadrons of f-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft. It also has significant sites including military research and development facilities and bases. A nearby city, Natanz, is home to one of the country's nuclear enrichment sites.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This was the first major attack carried out against the coalition forces after many weeks. The attack took place days after Israel reportedly responded to a drone strike by Iran on the Islamic republic, amid the ongoing Gaza war.</p>

<p>The Iraqi security forces, in their statement, accused "outlaw elements of having targetted a base of the international coalition with rockets in the heart of Syrian territory", at around 9:50 pm (1850 GMT).</p>

<p>He blamed the attack on the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which is a loose alliance of Iran-backed groups.</p>

<p>The attack took place a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani came back from the United States where he held talks with President Joe Biden at the White House.</p>

<p>"We can't confirm that the truck was bombed by US&nbsp;warplanes unless we investigate it," a military official said.</p>
