<h2>What does jamming do?</h2>

Jamming disrupts the satellite signals, including GPS, preventing them from reaching aircraft and misleading pilots about their actual location.

Luc Tytgat, head of EASA, expressed concerns about the escalating attacks on these systems.

"GPS jamming does not directly impact the navigation of an aircraft and while it's a known issue, this does not mean an aircraft has been jammed deliberately," he said in a statement.

The suspected Russian attacks have surged from fewer than 50 incidents per week last year to over 350 per week last month, as per The Sun's claims.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the government was monitoring what she called a significant threat posed by Chinese espionage in business, industry and science.

"We look very closely at these risks and threats and have clearly warned and raised awareness about them so that protective measures are increased everywhere," she said in a statement.

In this case, the issue of German innovative technologies that can be used for military purposes was "particularly sensitive", she added.

Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said in a statement: "At the time of their arrest, the accused were in further negotiations about research projects that could be particularly useful for expanding China's maritime combat power."

The Chinese embassy in Berlin said Beijing firmly rejected accusations that it carried out spying activities in Germany.

"We call on Germany to desist from exploiting the espionage accusation to politically manipulate the image of China and defame China," a spokesperson for the embassy said in an emailed statement.

Prosecutors identified the suspects as Herwig F. and Ina F, a married couple who run a company in Dusseldorf, and Thomas R., described by prosecutors as an agent for an unidentified employee of China's Ministry of State Security (MSS).

The couple concluded a cooperation agreement with a German university through their company, which involved preparing a study for the MSS employee on machine parts that can be used for marine engines such as in warships, prosecutors said in a statement.

The suspects also purchased a special laser from Germany on behalf of and with payment from the MSS, and exported it to China without authorisation, according to the prosecutors, who did not specify what the laser could be used for.

The arrests were made on the basis of information gathered by Germany's domestic intelligence agency, prosecutors said.

The State Department’s annual human rights report cited several reported rights violations committed in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza in 2023 by parties, including the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Hamas militants and the Palestinian Authority, before and after Hamas’&nbsp;Oct&nbsp;7 attacks threw West Asia into turmoil.&nbsp;

The report said that the war in the Gaza Strip has had a "significant negative impact" on the status of human rights in Israel. The State Department also cited credible reports of "unlawful killings" to assert the deteriorating status of human rights in Israel and Palestinian territories.&nbsp;

The report referenced the deaths of more than 21,000 people in the Gaza Strip through the end of 2023.&nbsp;

The report added that Israeli authorities had taken "some steps to identify and punish officials accused of committing human rights abuses" in the West Bank, where the US as well as Gulf nations have long criticised illegal Israeli settlements.&nbsp;

The US Navy has come up with a radical, cost-effective idea to keep up with the latest security challenges in the troubled waters of the Pacific region. According to media reports, the country is mulling over converting its surplus oil rigs into mobile missile defence and resupply bases.

Although their feasibility and effectiveness are doubted by some, experts believe this could emerge as a cost-effective idea to enhance the USA’s naval capabilities in the wake of increased security challenges from China.

The ambitious plan was unveiled at the Sea Air Space 2024 expo in Washington DC and is led by Gibbs &amp; Cox, a Leidos company.

<h2>The idea</h2>

The plan, known as the Mobile Defence/Depot Platform (MODEP) concept, involved converting oil rigs into bases and then positioning them at strategic locations offshore.

These makeshift bases will be capable of operating on their own for a good 12 months.

These rigs would help the US Navy enhance air defence capabilities and aid strike missions.

These platforms would be able to hold up to 100 large missile launchers and up to 512 vertical launch systems (VLS).

<h2>Strategic game changer</h2>

US officials have hailed the concept as a strategic game changer, with Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, an official at the US Navy, saying that such bases would substantially reduce risks and costs associated with land-based defence systems.

As per estimates, the converted bases will only cost 10 per cent of the newly-built Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system.

<h2>Concerns</h2>

But not everyone has lauded the idea.

Some have warned that such bases could become vulnerable military targets. They also raise concerns that these could prove to be ineffective when compared to the conventional capabilities of these semi-permanent offshore military bases.

However, overall, the project looks ambitious and reflects a broader shift in military strategy as the US adapts to new geopolitical realities and technological advancements in warfare.

The US Navy has come up with a radical, cost-effective idea to keep up with the latest security challenges in the troubled waters of the Pacific region. According to media reports, the country is mulling over converting its surplus oil rigs into mobile missile defence and resupply bases. Although their feasibility and effectiveness are doubted by some, experts believe this could emerge as a cost-effective idea to enhance the USA’s naval capabilities in the wake of increased security challenges from China. The ambitious plan was unveiled at the Sea Air Space 2024 expo in Washington DC and is led by Gibbs & Cox, a Leidos company. The idea The plan, known as the Mobile Defence/Depot Platform (MODEP) concept, involved converting oil rigs into bases and then positioning them at strategic locations offshore. These makeshift bases will be capable of operating on their own for a good 12 months. These rigs would help the US Navy enhance air defence capabilities and aid strike missions. Strategic game changer US officials have hailed the concept as a strategic game changer, with Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, an official at the US Navy, saying that such bases would substantially reduce risks and costs associated with land-based defence systems. As per estimates, the converted bases will only cost 10 per cent of the newly-built Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system. Concerns But not everyone has lauded the idea. Some have warned that such bases could become vulnerable military targets. They also raise concerns that these could prove to be ineffective when compared to the conventional capabilities of these semi-permanent offshore military bases. Former US president Donald Trump’s trial over alleged hush money payments resumed Tuesday (Apr 23) where prosecutors accused him of violating a gag order in several of his posts made on Truth Social media platform. Prosecutors urged&nbsp;judge&nbsp;Juan Merchan to fine Trump $10,000 for violating the order which prohibits him from criticising witnesses and others involved in the case. "Defendant has violated this order repeatedly and hasn't stopped," New York prosecutor Christopher Conroy said in the New York courtroom.

Conroy also added that Trump’s attacks on social media forced a juror last week to withdraw over privacy concerns.

"He knows what he's not allowed to do and he does it anyway," Conroy said, adding, "His disobedience of the order is willful. It's intentional."

The hush money trial is over the alleged $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels by Trump ahead of the 2016 presidential elections.

Trump’s defence attorney, however, claimed there has been "no willful violation" of the gag order. Todd Blanche, Trump's defence attorney, said, "President Trump does in fact know what the gag order allows him to do and not allow him to do."

During the trial, Judge Juan Merchan got heated up and asked to clarify why exactly Trump made those controversial posts.

In response, Blanche said Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, and Daniels had repeatedly criticised Trump politically in the lead-up to the trial.

Merchan lost calm here and yelled, “I'm asking the questions, OK? I'm going to decide whether your client is in contempt or not, so please don't turn it around."

Todd Blanche added seven of the 10 alleged violations should not be taken into account as they’re just re-posts.

“It’s not making a mockery of the gag order, your honour – it’s a close call,” Blanche said, adding, "It’s just common sense."

Merchan also got frustrated with the slow pace of the hearing.

"I’m not getting an answer, it’s now almost 10:30, the jurors are going to be here at 11 o’clock. I don’t want to keep them waiting," he said.

"Mr Blanche you’re losing all credibility, I have to tell you right now … You’re losing all credibility with the court. Is there any other argument you want to make?"

Meanwhile, during a brief court break, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to go after the judge.

He wrote: "HIGHLY CONFLICTED, TO PUT IT MILDLY, JUDGE JUAN MERCHAN, HAS TAKEN AWAY MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH. EVERYBODY IS ALLOWED TO TALK AND LIE ABOUT ME, BUT I AM NOT ALLOWED TO DEFEND MYSELF. THIS IS A KANGAROO COURT, AND THE JUDGE SHOULD RECUSE HIMSELF!"

Lucy Letby, the former neonatal nurse in jail for murdering seven newborn babies and attempting to kill another six babies at a hospital in northwest England where she worked, has renewed her attempts to appeal against the conviction.

She is currently serving 14 whole-life prison terms at HMP Bronzefield prison in Surrey for murdering five baby boys and two baby girls between 2015 and 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Last year, she was found guilty by the Manchester Crown Court after a 10-month-long trial.

At her trial, the jury was told that she carried out the murders by injecting some of them with insulin and others with air or force-fed milk.

<h2>Attempts at appeal</h2>

The 34-year-old "angel of death" initially tried to appeal against the conviction shortly after her trial ended in August 2023. However, she was denied permission to do so by a single judge.

She appeared&nbsp;before Judges Dame Victoria Sharp, Lord Justice Holroyde and Lady Justice Lambert via a video link from the prison on Monday (Apr 22), and presented her case.

The former nurse, as per The Guardian, is&nbsp;contesting the denial of appeal on four grounds, and the argument that she was wrongly denied applications made by her legal team during the case.&nbsp;

However, as per the BBC, Letby, who was in her 20s when she murdered the newborns, is due to be re-tried on one charge of attempted murder, which the jury at her trial was unable to decide on. The re-trial is scheduled for June, and to avoid any prejudice among the jury, the media is not permitted to report the full details of the appeal hearing at this stage.
